I've noticed that the Phantasy Star "Sound Collection" albums, which used to be quite expensive ($100+), now can be had for next to nothing.  Here is a link to YJA past sales, where a copy of Sound Collection I sold for 1200 yen today:

Anyone know why this old and well-regarded album has seen such a price slide?  Maybe a ton of copies were printed?

Relatedly: what are some other albums that have seen similar price slides, and are now very affordable?

Sound Collection I's value plummeted because its content was reprinted (and superseded generally) by this album:

Not sure about Sound Collection II. I think II might have material on it not found on I. But I'm *pretty* sure that 100% of the content on PSC1 is in the 2008 collection, though the disc 1 material from PSC1 was broken into separate tracks... the arranged content appears at the end of dics 1 of the 2008 album, IIRC.

The thing is, Sound Collection I included an arranged version which is NOT included in the reprint. However, apparently people do not know this or they are just more interested in the midi. Myself, I love the arranged music and not the midi.

If that's the case, then cheers to collective ignorance and collectors looking for a bargain. smile

Seriously. Unless all you want is midi, I would totally recommend people to snap-up Sound Collection I, the arranged music is one of my favorite!

Nowadays I see FF Mystic Quest, Tenchi Souzo, and Eternal Arcadia regularly sub 15,000JPY.

The soundtrack for the first two Lufia games used to command $400-$500 regularly, now can be had for around $40-$50. Major shrinkage. I wish Super Mario RPG OSV would end up with a similar fate.

Is it preferred to go after the older seperate albums instead of the Biography collection from '06?

GoldfishX Sep 28, 2016

In my humble opinion, the '06 release is junk. The volume is too low, the Lufia II tracks don't loop (they do on the original release...Lufia 1 doesn't loop on either!) and the two arrangements are crap. The selling point is the Lufia III music, but I can't say it stuck with me the way the music for 1 and 2 did. It's just really poor use of FOUR CD's. The reason I'm so harsh on that release is that I was looking forward to it when the original was going for insane prices and I ended up passing on it. No idea what the '06 one goes for.

The original Estpolis is definitely more expensive than the poorer 2006 release. However, the 2006 release did bring the price of the original down, although then again, I have not seen the original for sale in some time. The 2006 release as noted, is readily available for $40-50.

So, not all soundtracks have had their prices "collapse" smile
As most of you know, I'm selling most of my collection and just sold a couple of rare soundtracks for over $300. Sure, those are exceptions rather than the rule, but for the most part soundtracks have always been a niche thing. Still, barring reprinting, some soundtracks will likely always keep their value.

and now, shameless plug for my sale list:

Curious if you'd like to reveal what albums those were.  Also, without the userid that link just takes you to your own sale list, so you need to add "&userid=1967" to yours.

Thanks! Fixed that typo. Another typo too, the actual price for both CDs was over $300. However for the respect of the person that purchased the CDs I won't list them (although the buyer is welcome to do so). All I can say is that they are quite rare and in immaculate condition.

Oh, to get back to reprints killing prices, there was also All Sounds of SaGa and Live A Live, probably Majora's Mask too though I haven't seen the original listed lately, to a lesser extent the Napple Tale ones too.

GoldfishX Oct 31, 2016

Oh yeah, I snagged both All Sounds of Saga and Live a Live dirt cheap recently...I actually didn't know they were reprinted. Just happy to have the original prints. It was kind of a "why the hell not...I should finally pick these up" kind of deal.
