A new Bioshock game! Not due 'til 2012 (boo!). But there's already a trailer-

Have a look. What do you reckon?

I have only just finished the first two Bioshock games and I adored them both. I think the first had a really strong story but it wasn't told quite as well as it should be and the second had a slightly weaker story and yet I felt it was told much better. The first felt like an adventure game with combat stuck all over it (pretty good combat) whereas the sequel just came out of the closet and declared that being a shooter was fabulous. Both had stunning atmosphere, an amazing location (of which I felt we barely scratched the surface), a perfect soundtrack and, generally, just sucked me in and made me a part of that world.

So it's hard to know what to make of this one! It's a whole different beast. The trailer looks very cartoony. More Shrek than Bioshock. But the idea of the location and time period is intriguing.

One thought I had, however, having gone through both Bioshocks was that I felt the original wasn't quite sure whether it wanted to be an adventure game or a shooter. The sequel went for the latter. I'd love them to explore the former. But the synopsis on the site for Bioshock Infinite makes quite a big deal of the combat so I'm guessing that's not the direction they are going. Still, I'm on for more Bioshock in any form and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do with this time period.

2012 is too far away. But it's a lot of time to make what could be a fantastic game.

The locale and general idea seem amazing - I'm super excited for it.  The floating city could be absolutely awesome if done right!

I liked the first Bioshock quite a bit but didn't quite love it.  I have the second one, but haven't gotten around to it yet.

The wait for a proper System Shock successor continues.

If you'd have told me prior to Infinite's announcement that there's going to be a new BioShock set in SKY, I'd have called you daft.  Still might. wink

It's great to finally see what Ken Levine's mystery game is, and having it end up being an all-new BioShock isn't disappointing news in the least.  It'll be interesting to see how relevant it will be to the first two titles - especially the second one, of which Levine had no affiliation with its development.

Either way, I applaud more first-person shooters that bring radical ideas and settings to the table.  The technicolor palette alone shatters conventions.

Definitely. And, considering the darkness of the two Bioshock games, it's nice to see a whole other direction. The only thing with that direction, though, is that it looks very familiar to me. Very Final Fantasy-ish actually. I had never been to Rapture before. It was entirely new to me. But I feel like I've been to this place before. Albeit not in a FPS.

I really like the idea with this that it's not instantly apparent who is friend and who is foe. I think that could make it feel much more like a real world. Not that Rapture didn't feel real - it's just that we arrived to the Rapture party a little late and what was once a working city now didn't work. I hope we see more of a working Columbia. And I also love that we're playing a character this time - someone who already has a history and a role (and I very much hope they make a lot of the mystery in their story). I'd love to see that gameplay footage that was shown to journalists. Although that would probably make the wait until 2012 much worse.

But Murder Of Crows? That's just the bees, isn't it? Only with crows.

Still haven't played the second one, but the first was absolutely brilliant in every way. I look forward to the series wrapping up (if that's at all what they intend to do).

Last year I played through all three Bioshock games and all of the story-based DLC content that was released. I loved Bioshock 1, and I greatly enjoyed the underrated Bioshock 2 and Minerva's Den. I didn't like Bioshock Infinite much at all, and I especially disliked the half-baked expansion, Burial at Sea Episode 1. I'm currently playing Burial at Sea Episode 2, and I love it so far. It throws out pretty much everything I hated in Bioshock Infinite and BAS Ep1 and turns the whole thing into a stealth game. It's SOOO much better now. I hope to finish it in a few days and wrap up this series for good.

Man, I don't know anymore. The more I play of System Shock 2, the more I wish Bioshock was more like it. Bioshock was no slouch to atmosphere, but SS2 blows it out of the water in a lot of critical ways. Feels strange to afmit that considering I loved Bioshock when it first hit (and in fact bought an Xbox only to play it).

I don't know if you're going to be interested in the future of the series. The team that did the first three games (Irrational Games) was stripped down to a fifteen member team to focus on smaller, yet "narrative focused games" while future Bioshock games will be handled by 2K. Even if the series isn't over it probably IS over in another sense....

2K did Bioshock 2, which is actually probably my favourite Bioshock now that the dust has settled on all three.

I played Infinite pretty recently and really enjoyed it. Got somewhat tired of the endless lectures as I made my way through levels and, like Bioshock 1, I get the feeling Irrational thought it was smarter than it actually was but the setting was fantastic, the music great and the overall atmosphere was perfect. And the FPSing was all generally really good fun. I haven't played the DLC yet and there's nothing really drawing me to do so.

Since I heard so much about this game, I finally got around to playing it. It's short, but honestly not all that sweet. The original Bioshock was much MUCH better. I do think Elizabeth is a great character, but more could have been done with her. I also really enjoyed the enigmatic songbird, but again very little was done. The songbird was basically used as a Deus ex machina. As for the story, while it had much going for it, ultimately it becomes paradoxical and does NOT make sense. Which is to say, there are too many holes in the plot . It's like the paradoxical time traveller that goes back and kills his grandparent. Overall, it was a disappointing game. Perhaps my expectations were too high since I remember how wonderful the original Bioshock was (a great game with a great and logical story).

I played this for the first time for about an hour and a half last week, and it was OK. The best part was when you get the melee weapon and start slicing people's necks off, but other than that it just didn't grip me. I prefer the first game.

Amazingu Dec 23, 2014

Yes, the first BioShock was MUCH better, and Infinite was largely disappointing and forgettable, even if it was very, very pretty.

They do a lot more with Elizabeth in the DLC, particularly in Episode 2 where you play as her. Totally in agreement about Songbird, though. Wish he was put to better use.
