Hi.  I was just wondering if the DS soundtrack to Chrono Trigger is on par sound wise with say Soma Bringer or Chrono Cross?  I have played the original snes version many times over in my youth and was curious if the sound quality got bumped up a bit.

I'd say the DS version adheres fairly closely to its SNES counterpart.  So while the sound quality hasn't necessarily been bumped up in quality, it hasn't exactly been dumbed down, either.  There are some slightly higher strains on the treble side, due to the DS's sound hardware, but otherwise, they've done an admirable job in replicating the original score.

Paradox: SNES music has the best sound quality ever. wink

having listened to maybe 60-70% of what's available on snesmusic.org, I almost have a physical allergic reaction to that statement

It'd be nice if we got a full blown orchestral arrangement of Chrono Trigger. I'm not a fan of orchestration, but something about Trigger's music makes it just so for me.

And Zane, I totally agree with you. SNES music makes love to my ears so smoothly.

I had fired up the Chrono Trigger OSV again recently, and it suddenly occurred to me how lovely the track Wings That Cross Time truly is.  It was never one of my favorite airship/flying themes before, but wow, the smooth, progressive jazz sensibilities it exudes is so, so good.  If I owned my own Epoch, I'd go back in time fourteen years, and smack myself upside the head for being so non-appreciative of such a terrific piece.

Also made me go back to the OneUp Studios "Time & Space" album to soak up their sweet arrangement.

The DVD has an interview with Matsuda and apparently includes video of the recent orchestral arrangements. Much better than that hatchet job that they did with the PS1 soundtrack. Although now that I think about it, I do wonder if they'll include the music from the PS1 cutscenes.

It's a straight reprint of the SNES version plus a DVD apparently. Not even the orchestral tracks are included in the CDs.

Wait, not even Sekito's tracks from the PS version?  No Cherry Blossoms?  sad

According to VGMdb as well as the official site it includes 14 new tracks: 4 on disc 1, 3 on disc 2, and 7 on disc 3. I don't know enough about the new tracks to know where they are from though. My guess would be that at least some of them are the new orchestral recordings. I could be completely wrong though.

Either way, I'll definitely be picking this up eventually.

Looking at the tracklist, I'm pretty sure the PS tracks are tracks 20-23 on disc 3. They're all in CT DS, so I'd hope they'd be on the CD too.

Hi all.  I just listened to the first cd and found the sound, faithful to the original (which I do not own) and richer sounding than the playstation version (which I own).  There are arranged soundtracks, the last one being frog's theme and it almost seems the same as the playstation version, but slightly different.  Maybe that's cause I'm tone deaf.

Onto disc 2....

Square Enix changed their mind about this one. It was supposed to be 64 tracks, i.e. a straight reprint, but ended up compiling quite a bit more.

Square Enix's music licensing manager Izumi Tsukushi said that they wanted to do a standard reprint, just because it hadn't been printed in a long time, and the DS game gave them an excuse.  He said they decided to tack on the extra stuff as a bonus.  I asked if it'd come to the US store, and he said that the issue is that the DVD is region-locked.  A shame, because stuff is so much cheaper in the US store.
