I referenced it in the VP thread but I picked up some other Sakuraba arrange albums. However, I wanted to talk about something (somewhat stupid) that I did. I was interested in this album:

and I could have saved some money if I had bought this instead:

But I'm sorry, I absolutely HATE the artwork for Second Evolution.

Again, it's one of those debates that been beaten to death, but man, I can't stand how young Rena looks on that cover. Do I think the cover on the original print is mind blowing? Not really, but there's also a part of me that wants the album to say "The Second Story" because I grew up with the PS1 original and not the PSP update.

Are there any albums where you go with a new/pressing for some rather unimportant reason? Again, I willing to admit the difference in covers really isn't worth the difference in green, but I'm sure I'm not the only one that's done things like this. Do you have an personal examples?

The type of character designs used in Second Evolution are a large reason I stopped paying attention to a lot of anime. I loved the original SO2 character designs, but the new ones you pointed to have that cheap, mainstream "digital" anime look to them. And as you say, it's especially brutal what happens to some female characters in the transition. Same reason I can care less about the new Sailor Moon and any of the newer Falcom releases (and even the new Guilty Gear). There's just something about 90's anime designs that appeal to me. It's easier on the eyes and I appreciate the detail. The newer stuff, I tend to associate with lower quality graphics and sound.

Thankfully, I can't think of too many instances where it affected a buying decision for the music (since VGM reprints are generally rare anyway). One thing I can say is I do not have single Square album with the SQEX code. It's SSCX/PSCN or bust for me. It's just a mental thing, really. And thankfully, the prices of the originals have not appreciated in any meaningful way, so they end up being about the same.

I can relate to that. When I was doing the retro game thing I would not have any greatest hits pressings on my shelf. Apparently some people (retailers) get rather irritated when others have a no-GH clause because it's the same game. I get it, it IS silly, but damn it, if I don't hate that damn, ugly-ass green boarder,

When I was growing up and really playing games the GHs versions were a god-send because of the lower price. Later on they were kind of annoyance.

This. I'm not saying they were entirely responsible, but it was the character designs in games like Final Fantasy VII and Wild Arms that helped break down the barrier around things like anime for me. Truthfully I've never been huge on anime consumption, but seeing much more of this style in the PS1 era was probably the first domino.
