Check out Gamevideos.com for footage of Contra IV.  This week's episode of the 1up show also contains video clips and discussion of the game.  I like the Contra/Super C art style, but I'm not too thrilled about another impossibly difficult Contra game (the difficulty is readily apparent in the clips).

Please, please, please let this be true. ^_^

Sure would be nice, not to mention saving me $10 on the Virtual Console.

I'll have to pick this up.  I JUST finished New SMBs (at least round one with Mario - is there another ending with Luigi?)  Anyway, I am finally discovering the DS...Great for the bathroom...oh man....haha, I said that and I'm not even drunk...

I've grown so partial to Shattered Soldier and more recently, Neo Contra (yes, I enjoy Neo Contra... get off me), that I'm actually sorely disappointed with the Rambo/Predator throwback that Contra 4 was revealed to be.

Even if Neo was just a Smash TV parody of MGS, Shattered Soldier took Contra in a direction that I liked very much. My recall sucks, but I think I read (probably in Play Magazine) that the producers "apologized" for what the PS2 Contras had become. Infuriated is what I was! I would have loved to see a Shattered Soldier 2!

Ah well. Look for fan-art soon... LOL

That's interesting to me...1) They are extremely well produced 'classic' style platformer (Neo sorta), shooters, 2) They received pretty favorable reviews (Shattered Soldier did, anyway..).

I played it this weekend, in fact.  My only critique is the difficulty, which is surmountable, given enough practice (I never did beat either one).

My gripe with Contra IV (as with all games released on the DS), they have to be played on the DS.  Also, in reviewing some of the preview video of the game, the two screens look to be slightly 'off'...That's one thing about the DS and Wii in general...they're way toogimmickie to me.  Great games on both systems though...no doubt.

The game has officially been announced for a November 13th release date.  This, plus Super Mario Galaxy on the same day = INSTANT WIN.

The box art and marketing sheet was also released:

I'm a little tepid with the new box art, and would have rather seen the initial piece grace the front.  And "Revisit the franchise defining, side-scrolling action of the original" seems to imply that at least the original Contra is in.  Super C might be an unlockable.

Not to be picky, but Super Mario Galaxy actually ships on November 12th, so it'll be in stores one day before Contra IV.  This assumes that UPS and Fed Ex work on Veteran's Day, and I'm fairly certain that they do.  I think only USPS is off.  Feel free to correct me if you know otherwise.

You're right, of course.  Guess I should've said "in the same week."

In any case, it's going to one great week.  ^_^

Hey Angela - can you check the first link?  It doesn't appear to work.

Who did this cover art?  If it's not the original Japanese cover art, it was a pretty damn good art interpretation of the game.  I'm sure it was somewhat inspired by Predator, but the characters do look similar to Lance Bean and Bill Rizer on the original Japanese art.  There were so many cheesy cover art pieces back in the NES era, and this was one of the better ones.  I also like Metal Gear's (NES) cover art too.

Man, I wish I knew.  Always dug the original NES cover; it's an image that will forever be associated with my earliest days of gaming.

Konami had some of the better covers in the day; you simply couldn't beat those sleek, gray-ish silver backgrounds.

I also like Metal Gear's (NES) cover art too.

Ah, you mean the one that features actor Kyle Biehn?

I was just disappointed they couldn't fit Sean Connery in as well.

brandonk Oct 9, 2007

LOL...

Actor - Michael Biehn
Character - Kyle Reese -

Terminator and Aliens...Definitely influential on Konami.  That cover art comparison is a trip.

Heh, that did feel funny writing it.  And I always make that mistake, too; dunno, Biehn has always been Kyle to me. ;)

Thanks. No wonder I couldn't this guy's name.  False information from Angela is a rare occurrence. heh

Daily Star's Phil Villarreal (who seems so the Contra freak that I'd have no choice but to marry him..... I mean, homemade SPREAD GUN BOXERS!!) reports the bonus material that will be featured in C4:

BONUS CONTENT AVAILABLE FOR CONTRA 4

20th Anniversary Virtual Museum, NES Versions of Contra and Super C, Unlockable Characters and More

What:
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of the popular Contra franchise of video games, Konami Digital Entertainment plans to incorporate a wealth of in-game bonus content into its latest entry in the run and gun action franchise, Contra 4 for the Nintendo DS™. The content includes:
• 20th Anniversary Virtual Museum – this museum provides a virtual history of the Contra franchise since the early 80’s, including box art, screen shots and information on every version of Contra from the US, Japan and Europe. The museum also features an unlockable gallery of bonus art.
• Unlockable Games – The NES versions of the classic Contra and Super C are now unlockable.
• 5 unlockable characters, including the Probotector from the European version of the Contra games
• 2 unlockable digital comic books from longtime Contra artist, Atsushi Tsujimoto
• An interview with noted Contra Producer Nobuya Nakazato

Set after the events of Contra III: Alien Wars, Contra 4 follows hardened mercs Bill Rizer and Lance Bean into battle against a new extraterrestrial threat, complete with larger-than-life-action, massive enemies, fast paced run ‘n’ gun combat and mind blowing set pieces. The unique dual screen presentation of the Nintendo DS™ allows for frantic action and mammoth boss encounters, and a grappling hook allows players to access hard to reach areas, or dodge that pesky attack from a foe.

Contra 4 features a variety of game modes, including 40 Challenge Modes that will test the limits of even the best Contra veterans, as well as full cooperative play through the main story mode, where two players can take up the fight for mankind and destroy the evil forces of the Black Viper.

This new info has done nothing to quell my fangirl-ish squeals of joy.

I could have sworn you said that you'd marry some game journalist/blogger/etc. from the last hugely-anticipated game. heh

But all this bonus content is good news.
