In leiu of taking over the Valkyria Chronicles thread, I decided to make this one.

Pretty much everything you need to know about the game is contained there.  Since the game is still only out in the Eastern regions, you'll have to import it (or ebay).

Youtube video.

That video gives you an idea of what to expect when playing through the game.  I'm currently a female knight (which I'm finding out seems to be one of the harder classes to play as sad) and am slogging through level 2-2.  There's no "official" numbering, but there are 5 areas which you can visit and slay demons.

This game is brutally hard.  ...and it's not like levelling up is going to help you out all that much.  For those of you who loved Etrian Odyssey (myself included) this should be right up your alley.  It's unforgiving, but if you stick around long enough to learn the ropes, you'll find a deep, rewarding game just waiting for you.

Each "stage" has a boss at the end and these things are NASTY.  You though the odds were stacked against you playing Shadow of the Colossus?  Think again.  You are very much human and move as such.  The monsters are huge, powerful, and quick.  Get used to one-hit kills if you're not prepared.  Here's one such boss:  Tower Knight (1-2).  (spoilers on how to defeat him).  I must've gone through that stage at least 20 times.

The ambience is spot on.  There's no real music except for the Nexus (kind of hub area) and the bosses.  With as much as I was raised on JRPG's, not having music in the background is somewhat refreshing.  There's no forced mediocre melody so you can really "hear" your area.  For example, the first "stage" is a huge castle (brilliantly designed) and you can hear wood bending as you step on it, or if your sword strikes the wall you hear the sound of steel against stone.  It feels like you're there.

This is a great game.  Apparently Sony's Japan Studio co-developed it with From Software.  The result is one of the most brutal ARPG's in the vein of King's Field to come out in years.  A brilliant game that warrants play from anyone who enjoys the genre.

This game looks really cool. If they did a 360 port and released it here, I'd be on it like nothing else. I did notice that the release date for Europe and America is "TBA". Do you think we'll get it eventually? Might be on a short list of PS3 games I really, really want to get around to playing.

Video looked interesting, I'll put it on my "games to get if I get a PS3" list.

From what I gathered from the first post, it was codeveloped by Sony's Japan Studio, so I would most likely assume that this will stay a PS3 exclusive. It does look really interesting though and as soon as I gather some funds...whenever that may be given my trip to Germany in September, I'll probably pick it up.

Try NCSX.  They seem to be getting shipments in frequently (as opposed to playasia).

For those still interested in playing the game, you're only going to have to wait until this fall to pick up a copy here in the US.  Atlus is bringing it over. smile

Herrkotowski May 21, 2009

Yeah, I was going to import, but given the news, I think I'll hold off a bit.

Pellasos May 21, 2009

hope my copy will arrive in a few days.

i cant wait smile

Beat it last night!!  Kind of an anti-climactic ending, but still pretty good. smile  Now working on my New Game +.

i've been rocking this game for a few weeks now. 60+ hours in and at ~lvl 90. i have 2-3 optional (black phantom) npcs left to clear before i beat the game. i might start a new cycle soon after that. this is my most played game this year, together with SF IV. every RPG fan should give it a try, no excuses!

Kinda unrelated, but what are people's experiences with the music for this game? I hear Yuji Takenouchi composed it.

Pellasos Jun 28, 2009

there's almost no music in this game. you can hear some in the intro and the single townlike area, plus bosses. i think you can find the intro on youtube to get an idea about the style.

Music is by Shunsuke Kida.  Got some time with the producer at Anime Expo, and will be posting some info about the US release and the soundtrack on Tuesday.

Herrkotowski Jul 5, 2009 (edited Jul 5, 2009)

That's interesting, as Yuji Technouchi (Takenouchi) also mentions his involvement with Demon's Soul on his Myspace page. I'll have to ask him about it.

EDIT: Credits do indeed confirm that Kida is the composer/arranger, whereas Technouchi served as Lead Sound Designer. The credits music is quite beautiful.

Here's some more information:

They obviously want you guys to stop importing it, haha.  Funny though.  I absolutely adore the King's Field series, and it seems people are really excited about Demon's Souls.  KF was never very popular.

Anyway, I hope they pull together a soundtrack release.  What I've heard sounds great.

hmm, those are some interesting in-game features he mentioned.
