Ordered it but haven't received it yet! I'm probably not the best person to compare quality of recordings with anyway

jb Aug 24, 2013

I watched this yesterday and I can't really complain about the audio for being what it is (2 channel PCM, barf).  What I can, however, complain about, is the absolutely awful editing job done by whoever edited this and pieced together the camera shots.  They just had no idea what they were doing.  There's a lot of points in it where they cut to instruments or instrument groups that just aren't even playing or aren't even performing the major sound at the time (like focusing wind instruments when it's a string part of the piece).

Added the April 13 (2014) Berlin show and the April 26 Portland one.

Also, listening to "Answers" on Distant Worlds: Returning Home the past couple days I am still astounded by how amazingly epic it is.  Since The Celebration has the only other recording available could anybody (jb? James?) fill me in on how it fares?  It would really be nice to have a version without the audience interrupting right at the finale! I just don't know if Susan Calloway could have possibly matched her performance in the Returning Home recording (though seeing it live it certainly sounded incredible).

Personally I'm indifferent to the video recording anyway - watching orchestral concerts on TV captures pretty much zero of the essence of seeing them live for me.  I'm just in it for the music. big_smile

Since I was at the Chicago show for The Celebration, seeing it on Blu-ray for the japanese recording is kinda neat and evokes the memory of being there for me.  I don't have access to my bluray of it atm but i found this online youtube and it seems pretty much complete with no interruption, so it's better for you, Adam.  I've only watched the Returning Home video once.

Compare the two here:

Alternatively a proper studio recording of Answers is available on the Final Fantasy Vocal Collection cd that was put out early this year, and if you have the Before Meteor blu-ray it's on there too.

Yeah but listening to the sample on the Square Enix page for FF Vocal Collection it's the original rock arrangement from the game.  I assume the same for the Before Meteor release as well?  The "astounding drama" I refer to for the piece is pretty much missing in that version.  Like a lot of Uematsu's recent work there are some good concepts at play but the execution leaves something to be desired, and it takes the work of a talented arranger to bring out its magic (in this case Tsutomu Narita, who did an excellent job with the other FFXIV arrangements on Returning Home as well).

I really would love to hear studio orchestral recordings of all these new arrangements on a Distant Worlds 3 *CD* & Bandcamp release.  They certainly have enough material by now to fill a solid album's worth.

Not sure what you mean when you refer to "astounding drama"...?  I've also seen Answers live, and while it is epic, I get the same feeling from watching on the blu-ray vs. remembering seeing it live...

And yes, the Before Meteor Answers is the same as on the FF Vocal Collection.

Ah "amazingly epic" were my words.  I misquoted myself. big_smile

Anyway what I'm saying is the arrangement on FF Vocal Collections and I assume Before Meteor is different from the one on DW: Returning Home and DW: The Celebration (and that you and I both saw live).  The former being the original rock arrangement used in the game and the latter being the newer orchestral arrangement, which IMO much better captures the astounding drama (there it is) of the piece.

ahhh... I gotcha now.  Ok.  I'll have to compare the recording vs live performance now myself at some point then.

Final two shows to round out 2014:

12/06: Toronto, Canada
11/01: London, England

Did anybody attend the 8/24 Chicago show celebrating FFVI's 20th anniversary?  Very curious to hear how that character medley turned out.
