Adam Corn Jan 21, 2017

Since Ashley has started a similar topic for 2017 I wanted to post a catch-up thread for 2016. If you discovered any film soundtracks from the past year that stuck with you please post here.

None of the film scores I heard in 2016 impressed me as much as 2015's The Force Awakens, but still I found several that are well worth listening.

Doctor Strange - One of Michael Giacchino's more consistent efforts overall and a welcome departure from the cookie-cutter bombast of many Marvel Studios scores. Also handily wins the award for Most Sitar.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - The poignant piano and 1920s-30s New York jazz James Newton Howard utilized in his fantastic King Kong score meet the magical tone of the Harry Potter series.

The Huntsman: Winter's War - Another fantasy score from James Newton Howard. Doesn't quite match the beauty of his Snow White and the Huntsman score but is a strong followup in the same vein.

X-Men Apocalypse - John Ottman's score is heavy on its namesake apocalyptic bombast but is surprisingly listenable for what it is. Not as memorable as his X2 score but an improvement over Days of Future Past.

Other scores with at least a few standout tracks include Zootopia, Jason Bourne, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

As there were quite a few film scores I missed over the year I'm looking forward to seeing other people's picks. Album comments are welcome but entirely optional!

I'm not totally sure if these are 2016 or not but:

The Revenant (I think it was really late 2015)
