Definitely digging this now.  It's probably just because I've been off of work for recovery (some minor surgery, nothing serious) and can't go anywhere, but I've put nearly nine hours into it now, and I'm still having a good, notaslgic time.  I honestly didn't expect to want to do more than simply check out this remake, but it's held my attention surprisingly well.  Of course, I haven't hit the difficulty wall yet, so maybe I'll chuck it once I do. ;-)

I'm just curious why everyone is bitching so much about the difficulty? Is it unfair, or are people just used to playing RPGs where you almost never die? I'm betting the latter. People bitched and moaned about how impossible Etrain Odyssey is. Well, I beat the final boss (did not yet finish the game BTW, since there's a whole bonus stratum, which is an awesome Easter Egg!) and frankly, that game really wasn't too difficult, just took some strategy. I did die a few times, but mostly because of poor choices made during battle. Anyway, looking forward to FF IV DS, although part of me is tired of all these remakes on the handheld. On the other hand, I'm drooling over finally being able to play Dragon Warrior IV (if I ever find the time)!

cheers,

I haven't found FFIV DS particularly difficult. Harder than any other version of the game, sure... but harder than Etrian Odyssey or even DQVIII? Hardly. People are just wussies. tongue

*Shudder* Dragon Quest VIII demolished my ass so bad . . .

Just passed Scarmiglione, and in Baron, pummeled Yang to his senses.  (I really missed Porom's "You hurt us, man!" quip from the original)  Mr. Earth Elemental's curse attacks left my party in shambles the first time, but I went off and abused the hell out of Parom and Porom's Twin Cast.  Needed to use two precious Ethers to pull it off, but it worked.

I really like some of the new animations they've included for enemies, especially the various Zombies and Scarmiglione himself.  That big, hulking two-handed swing they do looks painfully cool.

I've made it to Mt. Hobbs and I'm getting slaughtered by the random battles. This remake's difficulty bounces up and down like a yo-yo. Can't make up its mind! wink

I played somewhat into the Japanese version but for some reason, I found it easier. Then again, I was also playing DQVIII at the time...

Already nearing my endgame. About 40 hours in and in the Lunar Subterrane (sp?) now. Been playing it all week - no wonder FFIV is my favorite Final Fantasy. Awesome experience and it's great seeing some of those moments voice-acted out. The augments are a wonderful feature and really make Cecil a tank. Kain's gotten Darkness and Focus and he's doing big damage with Jump now.

I miss five-man parties.

I hear that.  Cagnazzo went down fairly easily in comparison to Scarmy.  Although he did manage to pull off a last-minute Tsunami that left Cecil standing alone victorious.  Since Cecil grabbed all the EXP, he went up seven levels in one shot!

Now I've got a set of the TwinCast augment.  Who should I save them for, I wonder?  Cecil and Kain?  Cecil and Edge?  Rydia and Rosa?

I don't look forward to stepping into the Dark Elf's lair - not without my precious metallic armor and weaponry. :(

I've always thought the Dark Elf cave/battle was the hardest in the game. I dread doing it in every version I've played. And then when he turns into the dragon and starts kicking your ass? *shudders*

I can't say I'm fond of the Wall 'o Doom either... but he was scarier when I was a kid. I think I was a closet claustrophobe...
