I see that there's a Blu-ray release of the Final Fantasy XIV soundtrack due to be released in March.

This to go along with another Blu-ray release of the Final Fantasy XIV soundtrack that was released just over half a year ago.

I'm assuming this is because there's new music for the "Realm Beborn" re-release that wasn't contained on the earlier "Before Meteor" one.  I'm sure it's a large amount of new music too 'cause it's not like Square Enix would nickle and dime their customers.

Anybody have details?

Before Meteor was most (if not all) of the FFXIV 1.0 stuff - there really was never a complete-ish soundtrack of that failed version of the game until it came out.

The FFXIV:ARR OST will contain all the new 2.0 and 2.1 (A Realm Awoken) stuff.  According to Masayoshi Soken he was really struggling with the amount of tracks that he was going to put on this thing and how long/looping the tracks would be.  In fact he was so concerned at one point that he thought it might be too much for one blu-ray disc.  i think the number of tracks is something like 119.

I really hope you're being sarcastic here... this is the company that has released Final Fantasy IV like... five times?

SNES (Original), PS1 (Anthology), GBA (Advance), DS (Remake), PSP (HD + Sequel) and there's probably a few ISO releases in there as well...

I'm sure some people are sick of those who jump on the "I Hate Square Enix" bandwagon... but still... they tick me off...

I'm pretty sure it was a given.  And yes, the hate on Squix is all over the net.  But it doesn't affect me in the slightest.  back on topic

This is actually good news to me, if Masayoshi Soken is the lead composer for this one. I enjoyed his Mario Basketball soundtrack and his contributions to the otherwise awful Seiken Densetsu 4 soundtrack, but it seems like he's been in the shadows for the longest time and is usually just a bit player on a lot of soundtracks. I really haven't been paying these FFXIV soundtracks any attention because I see Mizuta involved (one of the few times I experienced outright rage while listening to a soundtrack was the FFXI score) and Uematsu (he might as well be done at this point, especially after the horrendous Last Story).

And you're forgetting the original regular and Easytype releases...So that's six versions of FFIV. smile

For A Realm Reborn they pretty much threw out almost all of the music from 1.0 (with a few exceptions - there are tracks here or there on the first XIV Blu Ray OST that made their way in some form into the new game).  This should be mostly new material, and there's a LOT of it.

In fairness, Mizuta has really matured as a composer. His work on FFXIII-2 was impressive, actually overshadowing Hamauzu.

Have to agree with this. Mizuta is always an IMMEDIATE turn-off for me.
I just find his work immensely boring.
And The Last Story was pathetic in every single way.

I have the impression that the only classic Square RPG composer that's still worth a damn is Shimomura, and I don't think she was ever really part of Square to begin with.

On a positive note: FFXIV the game is quite good!

getting ARR FF for sure.

Even though I play an arcanist based in Limsa Lominsa, the night theme in Ul'dah is so peaceful and mellow... love it!

Pellasos and James, I removed your two YouTube links since Square Enix had them taken down.

I'm listening to some of the samples on the OST's official site now.  It's a hassle to go through them all (really don't see why they don't just add a play all link) but the quality seems pretty high up there.  Track 5 "To the Sun" is very nice.

So was track 10 "Bo-down / Rental de Chocobo" featured in the original FFXIV release?  Wherever it's from, the arrangement in Distant Worlds Returning Home that I love so much is based on it. big_smile

James O Mar 13, 2014

Bo-down/Rental de Chocobo was on the Before Meteor soundtrack.

I picked up both Before Meteor and am patiently awaiting A Realm Reborn now that today is the official release day! I only played the beta of ARR for a little bit, but the music was really good. Haven't been all that impressed with BM tracks, not nearly as relaxing or dynamic as the new stuff.

Looking forward to that little box from Otaku.com to get here! big_smile

I've still yet to hear this one.  How's it holding up for those of you who bought the blu-ray soundtrack or are playing the game?  As favorably as early impressions?

James O May 25, 2014

no surprise hearing this from me, but I still love the music for this game even now.  I went so far as to make a couple mp3 discs to play in the car.  =p

If you can find video of Soken from the NicoNico Choukaigi event last month you'll see how he did up the Leviathan theme, and man that's a lot of plugins and stuff for just making music for a game.  it's mind boggling.
