A few days ago, I ate half a 12 inch turkey sub from Subway. The next morning, I found it difficult to eat breakfast and had to leave work early. I slept for 5 hours, and then had diarrhea. About 15 minutes later, I threw up tremendously. Whatever it was, my body decided it was going to go, as it used both ends of the digestive tract. Right after throwing up, I brushed my teeth and was able to put down half a sweet potato. Those are, from a nutritional viewpoint, the opposite of lettuce. I figured I lost nearly all the nutrients in my body, so what better than sweet potato?

I was able to eat a normal breakfast and lunch the following day, but the diarrhea persisted. I learned something about diarrhea, something quite painful. If you think you have it - don't eat spicy foods. I'd rate that experience as just slightly less delightful than the insertion of the chest tube during my first lung surgery.

Despite all of this, I wanted to know more and was able to develop a theory. For the past month, the grocery store near me has had a sign posted in the deli about the turkey shortage. I asked the girl that grabs my meat if the turkey shortage is just here or everywhere? She said it's everywhere. So then, at least, I could speculate that the Subway was also low on turkey and used whatever they had, old or new.

There's all sorts of conspiracies I could get into, including food (and medicine) shortages, and the tainting of mass-produced foods, but most already know the world's ending soon. Final Fantasy XIII-3 told me so.

Seriously though, you're best off buying your own ingredients (and even growing your own vegetables), and cooking for yourself. I don't think cold cut sandwiches are as feasible as they used to be, due to possible food borne illnesses. You really should eat cooked food.

Last time I was vomitously sick, I went to a restaurant where hardly anyone else went; half the lights were out in the place, and the restroom lights flickered like in a horror movie. I was still a naive teenager at the time, so I didn't pay that much mind - the employees certainly didn't - but looking back on it, those were definite red flags, but how bad a restaurant is, isn't always that obvious.

Subway is still dirty fast food.

I used to work fast food, and I gotta tell ya, those health regulations are scarcely enforced. They're enforced if they think a health inspector is going to be there, but it's also often cheaper to pay off said inspector, than it is to improve the cleanliness of the restaurant. The parodies and satires you see of fast food restaurants are more true to life than you think, it's face-melting horrifying.

I probably haven't eaten at a Subway in 4 years. Last time I did, I was finding out that none of the locations near me knew (or had the ingredients) to make a pizza sub anymore, so I ended up buying my own ingredients (baguette, pizza sauce, shredded cheese and pepperoni) and making my own. It's actually cheaper that way too, and so long as you have a microwave oven, you're good.

Reading what gluten does to the body, one could make an argument that 95% of the available food at various places to eat is poisonous. Ironically, I noticed it the most from Subway, because of the bread and my immediate need to sleep afterwards.

I try to avoid gluten myself, but just as many sources will counter and tell you gluten is perfectly healthy; might those sources be wheat farmers?

Another thing to note is that there are those who believe cow/dairy milk isn't fit/intended for human consumption. I drink coconut or almond milk, myself.

If you try to go with everything people tell you are bad, you're left living on water and...uh...I dunno strawberries maybe?

Well, bottled water at least, and then probably only specific brands.
You don't wanna know what's in tap water...

Seriously though, poultry can be real nasty on ya if not prepared correctly, so there's a pretty good chance it was the Turkey, yeah. Can't say I've ever had any problems with Subway though, but I live in Japan, and people actually have hygiene/quality standards here.

I drink only tap water mostly, but then, guess water quality is different in here Finland.

Also, Jodo, you got food poisoning and didn't even contanct Subway or health related authorities?

Bottled water is actually not particularly good for you. In fact, studies show it's worse and at best typically no better than tap water, at least here in the USA.

Well there you go.

Thank you. I personally dislike Subway's advertising that attempts to make the franchise appear not to be a fast food chain.

Trace amounts of arsenic, fluoride, mercury, the list goes on.

Sure, fluoride is in your toothpaste, but the directions on the tube tell you specifically not to swallow the stuff, and call poison control if you do.

There does exist non-fluoride toothpaste (tea tree oil, neem, aloe vera), but honestly, I sometimes wonder if that stuff does as good a job preventing tooth decay and gum disease, otherwise the taste and texture of that stuff is amazing.

Razakin wrote:

A lot of the stuff that's pumped into American tap water is outlawed in Europe, and other civilized parts of the world.

Fluoride is blamed for a multitude of problems, including lethargy and decreased cognitive function (there are sources that will tell you the stuff solidifies inside your brain), as well as contributing to obesity and the storage of fat within the body. Many things that the body doesn't know how to metabolize (a lot of things in processed food, for example), it stores away as fat.

If you're worried about water quality, there's plenty of ways, and inexpensive ways at that, to filter your tap water at home - buying bottled water gets costly after awhile, and it's been already pointed it, most of the time, it's not even all that much better.

Some people actually prefer to have a well water system, and then they just filter that, rather than being hooking up to municipal water utilities.

Biological contaminants (bacteria, protozoa, etc.) are actually very surprisingly easy and inexpensive to filter (really, you can just boil water, if you have to), but chemical contaminants are very difficult to separate out of water, though it is still possible.

The best alternative way of things, I think, is filtrating your water at home, and pouring it into bottles and jugs yourself, for storage, and drinking out of them as needed.

If I ever want a commercial sub sandwich, I go to either Potbelly's or Quiznos (do they even still exist? Haven't seen one in ages). Also have Firehouse Subs where I live, but I've never tried them before (I probably should, people tell me they're good). They're more expensive, and their portions aren't incredibly hearty (I typically order 2 sandwiches for myself when I go to one of those places), but compared to Subway, it's worth it.

I know it's kind of a cop-out to say... but what doesn't kill you these days.

Brofist, man. I was going to recommend the PF-2 and the PF-4 if people wanted recommendations, specifically.

Also, the Avatar from Ultima, by any chance?

Brand Sins on YouTube also has a video about Subway:

And now you're probably just going to spend the next day or two watching all of their videos.
YOU'RE WELCOME.

Firehouse is my favorite sandwich place.

TerraEpon Aug 29, 2015

Incidently I actually like Subway over Quizno's because Subway actually has nice basic sandwiches which you can add what you want, Quizno's has almost exclusively selections that have a lot of shit I don't like on them already (yes I know you can customize but that's not the point)

I know it's not the greatest quality ,  (though certainly not any worse from subway or Quiznos).but I love me some firehouse subs every once in awhile

I wasn't in any condition to carry out such a task. With the vomiting and voiding also came a relentless PPH (powerful pounding headache). All I wanted to know was how to relieve the pain. Once the pain became manageable, I started to investigate why it happened. Although the vomiting lasted one day, the voiding continued for 6 days. Today was my first day truly clear of the problem. I don't feel confident it's 100% purged, so I'm maintaining a special diet for several more days. It is:

Plain oatmeal with lactose free milk.
Plain yogurt.
Sweet potatoes sans skin.
Salted crackers.
Banana chips.
Sports drinks high in electrolytes and low in sugar.
Skinless chicken breasts with no seasoning/flavoring of any kind.

NO fish or fish oil supplements, since EPA and DHA can exacerbate diarrhea. I take fish oil everyday and thought it had no side effects, so it wasn't until 4 days in that I thought to look at my supplements.
NO spicy foods.
NO apples, almonds, green vegetables, carrots.

So, what could've been wrapped up in 2-3 days was extended to 6 days, due to my lack of knowledge.
