"Golden Axe The Music" comes out on February 21st, 2008.  This three disc set includes the music to Golden Axe, Golden Axe II, Golden Axe III, Golden Axe The Duel, and Golden Axe The Revenge of Death Adder.  Looks like it's going to include both the Arcade and Genesis versions of the first game, and both the Arcade and Saturn versions of The Duel.  It also says there will be new arrangements exclusive to this release.

It's gonna be one of those Sega Direct only releases but I'm assuming VGM World and/or Play-Asia will stock it as well.

P.S. Did I mention I f---ing love Sega?  Now all we need is a Sonic 1-3, Knuckles, and 3D Blast set!

I'd love to see a Sonic set as well.

You're magic. Start talkin' about Sonic.

Angela Dec 24, 2007

Nice!  It's a long shot, but I wonder if they're going to include the "Sega Ages" music arrangements of Golden Axe, too?

Yeah, that'd sure be nice. smile

Solon Jhee Dec 28, 2007

I don't remeber this arcade game by the music, anyway that's great news

Magical Penguin Dec 29, 2007

I played through the first and second Golden Axe a couple of times when I was younger, but I can't seem to remember any of the music at all. Seems like an odd choice for a soundtrack release, but at least it gives hope to other Sega games that never received a soundtrack. With that said, the news about the Phantasy Star game collection for the PS2 might finally give me a PSIV soundtrack.

I presumed the release was to coincide with the new game that's coming out next year, "Golden Axe: Beast Riders."

XISMZERO Dec 29, 2007

Release the damn Sonic/Genesis soundtracks already. It's disgraceful Sega has been avoiding it for this long.

Agreed wholeheartedly.  Thank goodness for the VGM project in the meantime!

Just got this in the mail today from VGM World.  If anybody wants some sweet info including a tracklist and composer breakdown for each game, I updated the VGMdb page with all the goods.

thanks for the info Mike, i would love to have it in my hands soon

I enjoyed the music from the first and second games. This soundtrack compilation CD should be brilliant!

Adam Corn Feb 10, 2009

Massive bump here but would anybody care to comment on this soundtrack now that it's been out for almost a year?  Everybody talked about wanting it but nobody ever talked about listening to it smile

I'm especially interested in hearing about any arranged material that may be on there.

Planning to order a couple of Sega soundtracks from the ebten online shop and though Panzer Dragoon Remastered is a given and Nights Perfect Album is likely, I might let Golden Axe sneak in there.

Carl Feb 10, 2009

The set is mainly all about the originals, so that's the big draw.
If you fondly remember the games, that's what'll be the deciding factor.

Of the two arranges, Tomoyuki's is orchestral and Makito's is techno

charmed699 Feb 10, 2009

This sounds like a worthy purchase Adam but maybe not many of us have it as it is so hard to get outside of Japan.Would save up to buy it if SEGA allowed international buyers on the online shop. smile

Hey charmed, you can always order it from VGM World.

It's a bit pricier since it is a special order item, but that is an option for International buyers.

Amen, my brother!  VGM World rocks, hard.  The price might be high but she makes up for it in personal service, exclusive products, and unique YouTube vids. wink

Anyway yeah, Adam, as Carl said, this set is all about the original music.  If you enjoyed this series of games as a kid, you're gonna love this album.  The actual transfer from the old consoles to CD is pretty decent too (nothing like the atrocious first disc of LC-1453~4, heh).  For me, Golden Axe and Golden Axe II for the Genesis were a couple of my favorite games as a youngster.  I can't even count how many times I ran through the first game all the way through.  I'm still a pro at it, heh.  On a good day, I can finish it with only losing maybe one or two lives.  That's why I was suuuper excited when Sega announced this soundtrack!

Thanks guys as I thought she ran out of stock a while back.I will have to save up some money and check out what else is back in stock! smile

I never heard that much music when it comes to the Golden Axe series. I played a demo for Duel on my Saturn and and all of Golden Axe when it came out on xbox arcade.

This and the complete Phantasy Star albums are two that I want to add to my collection in the future.

Adam Corn Feb 10, 2009

Yes, I fondly remember the first Golden Axe game (both for arcade and Genesis), but I don't have any longstanding impressions of the music.  Really Streets of Rage and Sonic are the only Genesis game soundtracks I do specifically remember being impressed by way back then.  (Which is not to say there weren't others, just that I don't remember them.)

I just found it strange that their was no commentary on the soundtrack despite the considerable anticipation leading up to its release.  As a 16-bit OST, unless it's truly exceptional I will probably just stick with Panzer Dragoon and Nights, both of which I already know to be exceptional smile

Angela Feb 12, 2009 (edited Feb 13, 2009)

Since we're on topic, just thought I'd again share the Sega Ages version recording of "Wilderness."  It's still one of my most favorite arrangements of the classic piece:
