Topic says it all.

I just recently moved and I am now (trying) to unpack my collection. At the moment I'm looking for a new way to store my discs and I am interested in suggestions.

Before I was using Sterilite 3-drawer wide carts which worked great. They're cheap, easy to replace (you find them at any just about dept store), but the problem is that they are not manufactured to carry heavy loads so after you fill each drawer the plastic tends to give after a few months. The drawers were flat with no added molding inside the drawer allowing cases to line up vertically on their spines for a max capacity of about 300-400 albums per shelf.

I've looked into commercial storage solutions/boxes for CDs/Media but most make the assumption that you are either storing just the disc in a paper sleeve or just a naked jewel case. Because of this most are too snug or won't fit at all a jewel case that has a plastic CD sleeve protecting its contents. Also because they tend to be ridiculously tiny storing 50~100 at the most.

I know some people here put their stuff on shelves, but I'd prefer to store them in my closet. Also would like some uniform storage because right now I have somewhere around 25 boxes of various sizes. What do you use?

I use shelves. Old-fashioned, but they work. lol

I have my favorites up on the top, then everything else laid out as I go down by company pretty much. Moot point, since most of my listening comes from the computer, but keeps everything tidy.

I have a wall-mounted 9-panel shelf that holds DVDs sideways and stacks CDs. It used to be that I had PS3 games on the top 3 shelves and VGM on the bottom 6. Now all 9 are filled with VGM. My wife is not happy with me. tongue

I am worried that the stacking method could lead to case damage, but each panel/hole holds only ... 12 single-wide CDs, I think. So hopefully that weight isn't killing anything.

I have mine in Ikea Leksvik CD towers - unfortunately they don't make them any more and I'm getting near the point where I theoretically need another one to keep expanding.  The Billy style ones are similar, but I like the solid real wood of the ones I've got.

I just have a seven level shelf I bought at Media Play many years ago (atually I have two big and two small of them, but VGM sits all near the bottom on one of the big).

Like with the rest of my discs, anything from a 'generic' case I put into a sleeve which saves a LOT of space, though a large  amount of VGM is either in a 1.5-size case, more than 2 CDs, has a slip case, or there's some other non-genericness about it (like the thick white case for FFV), so it takes of a lot more room reletively speaking.

I just bought a Billy today, thinking the five shelves it came with would be enough to hold all my game stuff. While that's more or less true, there's also a lot of negative space that's bugging the hell out of me.

Does Ikea sell individual shelves for their stuff?

These are great, although they may not be ideal if you have many hundreds of CDs.  One side is covered only by fabric, so these cases cannot be stacked flat and are probably not meant to be stacked on any side.  The slots are, however, loose enough to accommodate jewel cases with cellophane sleeves.

i have half a dozen 4x2 space EXPEDIT shelves and then the plastic LEKMAN removable drawers (clear goes well with black shelving) that slide inside each compartment.

we also had the gargantuan 5x5 space unit when we lived in IL, but it was too big to get out of the condo without disassembling, so i just included it with the sale.
