Just wondering...

I paid $2.21 per gallon for 87 in Amherst, MA this evening (at a "Pride" gas station). Back home in Connecticut, 87 is going for $2.28 (if you're lucky) and probably around $2.39 everywhere else. Luckilly I have a Honda though...

$2.38 is the cheapest I can find in the city limits of Gainesville.  I also saw $2.28 that was about 20 miles or so south on I-75.

My my... people who don't live in America are going to be really annoyed with you that you're paying such low prices for gas.  tongue  Currently in Northern Ibaraki, Japan, I'm paying 126 yen/litre at Mobil, which comes out to 477 yen/gallon.  Europe and Australia are generally in a much bigger world of hurt than here, though.

As far as the car itself, I'm driving a 1992 Toyota Carina ED... decent fuel efficiency, but not the best.  The car itself cost me 52000 yen, but I just paid shakken, which you have to pay every two years in Japan (150000 yen - older cars are more expensive) and every April is the government car tax which runs 40000 yen or so.  Insurance is something around 10000 a month.  Cheap to buy a car in Japan... not cheap to own one, generally.

Here it's 1.25 Euro per litre, which is about 4.73 Euro/US$ 5.63 per gallon...
I'm taking public trains instead. =P

Yeah, I ride the bus to/from work.  Don't have a car, but the girlfriend does.  Last I saw, gas prices in Minneapolis were at $2.03 per gallon.

I remember hearing a conspiracy theory that suggested that the surge in gas prices six months ago was a plot by the oil companies to get everyone "used to" the idea of paying over $2.00 per gallon for gas.  In other words, raise the price from $1.75 per gallon to $3.00 per gallon, then when you bring it to $2.00 a gallon, it will look cheap by comparison and no one complains.  Not sure if I believe the conspiracy part, but I have to admit that psychologically, that has worked.

$2.20~$2.40 per gallon here in eastern MA, and drive a '99 Toyota Camry. I get great mileage out of the sucker, and only really drive it on the weekends or during the evenings, since I take public transportation to and from work. My girlfriend drives it and uses it a hell of a lot more than I do, so she usually fronts the gas, which works out pretty well. If it's on E and I'm in it I drop $15 or so into the tank. My theory is that prices are slowly going down, so if we spend $10 or $15 a fill we'll actually be saving money somehow.

It ranges from $2.12-$2.40 in Seattle. I drive a '96 Mazda Protege and every time I fill up, I'm reminded that I've never actually owned a car during a time when gas was cheaper than $2. Whenever mom bitches about fuel prices, I just shrug. wink

XLord007 Feb 16, 2006

$2.29 in my area today.

jb Feb 16, 2006

2.19$ this morning!

Eiolon Feb 16, 2006

Paid $2.38 /gallon in Arizona yesterday.

Timt99 Feb 16, 2006

$2.15 regular here.

As for here, where we have the highest prices in the nation despite a first-ever gas-price cap, the gas station nearest to my house is $2.81 for 87 octane. In the boonies, it costs in the realm of $2.60 (or so I've been told).

Brandon Feb 16, 2006

Because of a gas-price cap. The cap is on wholesale prices, not retail prices, so, to the extent that it has any effect at all, all it does is restrict the supply of gas available to consumers. Then gas stations have to raise retail prices to ration the restricted supply.

Of course, the primary factor is probably that you're thousands of miles from mainland.

$2.89 here in the Queens, New York area.  With my '06 Mazda 3, I get about 28 city / 35 highway per gallon -- or so Mazda themselves say.  Although I suspect I actually get a little bit more out of it, which is always a good thing.

A few years back, driving to the Nassau County area proved to be a cheaper alternative, as prices were nearly a third less than what you'd pay in the city - but the gap is so close now, that it's not really worth making the drive just to save a few cents.

I stick to my usage of "despite" because I'm saying it in a slightly sarcastic sense. Lawmakers here believed the gas cap would help lower our gas prices. Now some legislators are calling for its repeal, saying it isn't working.

SonicPanda Feb 17, 2006

It's $2.12 here in pokey ol' New Bedford, but since I don't actually drive, I wouldn't personally pay even that much.
