I started ranting on a different thread, so I thought I would share some thoughts on the so-called talented director. To be fair, he gives the audience what they want and he is talented at making money. His work always starts off exciting, but shortly thereafter you begin to realize that it's nonsensical and dumb.

LOST = time traveling island, lots of eye candy (hot actors, special effects), lots of guns, lots of "oh hey, check this out it's cool and shocking" moments, completely stupid, oh and "love is the answer"

Fringe = time traveling people, some eye candy, lots of guns, lots of "oh hey, check this out it's cool and shocking" moments, completely stupid, oh and "love is the answer"

Star Trek = time traveling ships, some eye candy, lots of guns, lots of "oh hey, check this out it's cool and shocking" moments, completely stupid, oh and "love is the answer"

After sitting through WAY WAY WAY too much of his stuff, I basically refuse to watch any more. I have had enough needless pain. Life is too short.

I think this guy sums up why Star Wars will ultimately fail

by fail, I mean fail to be anything "good". It will make billions of dollars, rest assured.

Oh, and a crossguard lightsaber... yeah it's an Abrams moment...

You didn't mention my favorite show:  Alias.   Undoubtedly I wouldn't agree with whatever cynical, negative review you'd have for it.

Never seen it. I assume it's an Abrams production, in which case I shall pass.

If Star Wars didn't fail when Lucas did the prequel trilogy then I doubt anything Abrams could do would be "more damaging"

Yes, I went there and sorry, I know people get sick of the prequel bashing but the movie could completely suck and it would just make money on name alone.

Right. By "fail" he was not talking financially. He meant artistically, even if the term "artistically" is interpreted loosely. Basically, it's most likely going to be an Abrams disaster. Just watch how the movie starts off with a bunch of special effects and things that are just "cool"... actually expect most of the movie to be loaded with special effects and things that Abrams thinks are "just cool". Then watch a melodrama where ultimately "love is the answer". OK, to be honest you may have to wait a few movies for this to fully bloom, but most likely there will be "love is the answer" moments interspersed between the "cool things". Oh, and perhaps time travel in some way shape or form.

Abrams is hit or miss with me, but I figured I'd just throw in that while he started Lost and was responsible for pushing it in a more scifi direction than the original plan for the show was, he only directed the pilot and then left mid-first-season to do other stuff while leaving the show in the hands of Lindelof and Cruse.

The first Star Trek movie by Abrams was really good and I watched it twice. The next Abrams movie I watched was Super 8 and I also enjoyed it. I lost respect for Abrams after watching Star Trek Into Darkness, since he violated the rule that ships are safe during FTL (warp speed) travel. The safety of FTL travel is also a fact in the Star Wars universe, with the exception of being tricked by Interdictors.

I've never seen any TV shows by Abrams, but that's because I don't watch TV. Due to the disregard of the proper sequence of events following Return of the Jedi, as told in the Expanded Universe stories, I will not be watching Episode VII.

I'm not really the biggest Star Wars fan, and while I wouldn't avoid the seeing the movie because of this, yes, their tinkering of certain elements and past events (especially those involving Han Solo) are pretty damn bad...

...but then Lucas screwed around with things as well.
