VGM tracks that sound a little bit more than familiar to another VGM piece...

- Starfox's "Title Screen", the second movement, sounds almost exactly like the motif from Super Mario Bros. 3's "Airship BGM"

- The opening notes of FFIX's "You're Not Alone!" are pretty much identical to Kirby's "Gourmet Race" theme

Your turn...

Smeg Jan 12, 2007

I don't know the Starfox music that well, but the Mario tune you mention is essentially Holst's Mars so it's possible that the Starfox composer did the same thing.

SonicPanda Jan 14, 2007

The main melody to Crush Crawfish's theme (Megaman X3) sounds awfully close in parts to the title theme of the first Ninja Turtles game on the NES.

I'd bet money the opening to StarFox's Corneria was a deliberate takeoff of After Burner's main theme.

But the ultimate example remains Wrapped in Black of Sonic Rush sampling part of the melody of Grandia's Snow Town Laine.

I could think of others with more time...lemme think.

Hey, you're right! I never noticed that before... Then again, like 80% of action music these days is ripped off from "Mars" so that's not a surprise. Holst had no idea the legacy he created...

Smeg Jan 14, 2007

Mars by way of Star Wars - it's all Williams' fault for doing it first tongue

Wow. That's ridiculous right there. O_o

Shoebonics Jan 21, 2007

This one's pretty easy but, there's definitely some blatant Contra 3-last-stage-battle-with-the-Metallic-Gargoyle-while-clinging-the-wall-for-dear-life music going on in Metal Slug 3. Maybe intentional though..
I ain't one to gossip though so you didn't hear that from me!

I beliece it was Smeg who concurred with me in a discussion long ago that "Grandchild Goten - Trunks ~ Boys' Section Final Match" from Dragon Ball Z Super Fighting Legend 3 sounds remarkably similar to Castlevania's "Wicked Child."  So similar it is to me, in fact, that I've simply been treating the song as a really awesome arranged version of the CV piece.  ^_^

The next time you burn a Castlevania cd, slip it into the tracklist somewhere and see if anyone takes notice.

What'sa matter, is that Slave Crown robbing you of all your memories??

Zane Feb 16, 2007

Ugh!

"Now it's Our Turn" from Final Fantasy X-2 and "Last Decisive Battle - Big Tenrai" from Tenchu 3 Wrath of Heaven use the same slap bass guitar sound sample.

Grooosssss! sad

Princess-Isabela Feb 17, 2007

Conker's Bad Fur Day, the Dinosaur World(hoverboarding on lava with three punks), music in the background was extremely similar in places to Tekken 3, Jin Kazama stage.

Yes, I remember that.  It's incredibly similiar.

Dais Feb 17, 2007

Oddly enough, I have another one that has a bit that sounds kind of like "Wicked Child"

MICOM ~ Departure (Megami Tensei)

Shoebonics Feb 17, 2007

I never want to hear Bloody Tears ever again

Zane Feb 19, 2007

FFVI's "Relm" and FFVIII's "Eyes on Me" share a very similar melody line.

Ashley Winchester Feb 19, 2007

Parasite Eve's "Plovsive Attack" isn't too far removed from Legend of Mana's "Marginal Beast"

Datschge Feb 19, 2007

Should we really compare stuff by the same composer?

I was about to say the same thing.

But...quite a bit of Blue Dragon is reminiscent of Uematsu's previous work. tongue

Why not? When the melody is only several notes different from another song that has no ties to one another, I think it's quite valid to mention them. I'm not saying that "The Extreme" from FFVIII sounds like the normal FF battle theme around the 1:40 mark; those two songs are related and it's an obvious throwback with the intent to tie the trademark battle theme into "The Extreme".

If "Relm" and "Eyes on Me" are related in some way (besides Uematsu's laziness), feel free to post about it. Hell, feel free to contribute in any way besides spouting off facts like an encyclopedia, Harry.

Harry Feb 19, 2007 (edited Feb 19, 2007)

Zane, that comment was not intended as 'elitism' or as such, but as Datschge said, we shouldn't be comparing compositions by the same composer. There's more of less 1,000's of examples that could be said in terms of some of the more popular people (Sakuraba especially). I'm not saying don't list themes by the one composer, but it would probably be better if you submit compositions by 2 different guys. smile

(Well, obviously not 1,000's, but you get my point. wink )

Zane Feb 19, 2007

That's all good and fine, but I don't buy the "not intended as elitism" bit. Editing posts so you don't sound like you're talking down to someone doesn't really help when that person already quoted your original, unedited post.

I edited that before you posted yours.

Ashley Winchester Feb 19, 2007

Geez, I wasn't trying to start a fight here, but you have to admit PE and LOM are polar opposites of one another - that's what I was trying to get at. I just though it was cool how these simular tracks work well in both scores despite the vast difereneces in each OST's musical direction.

"Giza Plains" from FFXII sounds very similar in places to Vagrant Story's "Ifrit".

LOL, clever way of putting it

dma Feb 26, 2007 (edited Feb 27, 2007)

Wohoho, i submit this one directly while earing it. smile

Joe Hisaishi's "Ohmu" track from "Nausicaa Image Album" sounds really close to "Corridors of Time" from Chrono Trigger, from 0:00 to 0:57 on the Hisaishi track.
It's especialy obvious on the general tune structure but also on the melody at the beginning.

And "Nausicaa Image Album" is older of course (1983). wink

[EDIT] Oups i mistaken "Corridors of Time" with the game's main theme, corrected. smile

Red HamsterX Feb 26, 2007

Sonic 2's standard end-of-level Robotnik theme versus Atelier Iris's Succeed on Earth.

The connection is even more obvious if you listen to the version in the songbook/NISA's AI2 bonus disc, "Before You Leave".

Yeah, I noticed that, too. While that DBZ album used to go for $10, one would be even lucky to find that MegaTen album.

Zane Mar 8, 2007

Here's another one...

"Cairo Suite" from Halo 2 OST V.2 and "Anxious Heart" from FFVII OST. That's... interesting.
