Does anyone remember this old TV series? Anyone here a fan of "classic" cartoons? I always felt Jem was trying to be Transformers to girls. Well, OK, no giant robots and all, but it was filling a niche for young female audiences! Of course, young male audiences enjoyed it too, for perhaps different reasons tongue So, for those of you that had fond memories or whatnot, prepare for the inevitable Hollywood 80s-franchise-killing gut wrenching movie, to be released soon

Mmmm, I don't think this lady is particularly happy about the movie...

Yeah, I remember Jem. My sister was really into it when she was younger.

In fact, I have a cassette that came with one of the dolls still around... it has the "Misfits Theme" on it, and as silly as it sounds it's actually a pretty kick ass piece of music IMO:

"Mischief, we're making Mischief.
Making Mischief!
And we've gotta keep you quiet!"

The Freezepop CD Fancy Ultra-Fresh has a cover of the theme song to that show. It's a hidden track that's not on the track listing. It brings back some fond memories.

"Jem and the Holograms, a $5 million production...opened with just $1.315m on 2,413 screens this weekend. That is the fourth-lowest opening for a film opening on more than 2,000 screens...Even with that low budget and minimal advertising, this is an outright disaster."

OMG, I didn't click the link in your opening post so I had NO idea that the movie was live action...

...wow. Given that I'm not surprised.

One could say its failure was....

....truly outrageous.

All kidding aside I think the article you posted has a good point if its assessment of the movie is correct.

Movie studios don't tend to look inward when it comes to looking for the reasons why something went wrong and this movie might damage the idea of revisiting other, more feminine nostalgic properties in the future.
