Name your Favorite Scene in a Video Game.

Just one, for now.

For me, i would say

STAGE 2 of FINAL FIGHT.

The realtime subway train arriving and coming to a screetching halt after shaking the whole screen as it rumbles on the tracks..

and The Heroes bravely pummeling away the cocaine-fueled MAD GEAR GANG as this deafening madness goes on in the background.

..Your turn!

OMG In FFVII when Sephiroth kills Aerith!!!1!!oneonesix

Ashley Winchester Aug 7, 2008

The cut scene near the end of Zero's scenario in Mega Man X4 that reveals events prior to the first Mega Man X. Totally bitchin...

SonicPanda Aug 7, 2008

MGS1's Psycho Mantis encounter, start to finish. Before or since, nothing has blown me away to the same extent.

Zane Aug 7, 2008

Simple: Stage 1-1, Super Mario Bros, NES. It was the very first video game I had ever experienced, and its impact still sits with me almost 22 years later. Maybe it's because I was only 4 at the time, or maybe it's because it was my very first moments with a video game, but that entire experience is burned in my brain as the best part of any game I've played thus far. Just think of it - this is back when moving sideways was revolutionary. Hitting a block and getting a super mushroom was something that made me jump with excitement. Dropping down into that pipe to get those bonus coins - well, holy shit.

So, yeah. Best video game level ever.

I'll need to think over my fave gaming scene.  There's just way too many to count.

LoL, in the SNES version it got cut short, so it sounded more like Oh, My Cup!

I still haven't gotten to MGS4 yet (planning to play it in December), but for my fave TWIN SNAKES moment would be..

"I'm fine."

Amen, Brother.

The only thing they screwed up was changing Manson's last dying breath sentence from the original '98 sentence.

I think Kojima-san should release TWIN SNAKES again in an end-all, definitive Director's Cut (on on disc this time, *wink*) for ps3 with selectable Language Tracks (how about French for Sniper Wolf? Would fit her perfectly.), change between '98 and 2004 Voice Casts on the fly, and all that other good stuff.

We'll see, i suppose..

I remember seeing a picture of the Title Screen displayed on a big-screen tv in an old issue of BOY'S LIFE magazine.

SUPER MARIO BROS.

..That's all it took for me to start the nagging of the parents!

Shoe Aug 7, 2008

SUPER MARIO BROS. was like the video game equivalent of Disney's ALICE In WONDERLAND for me.

Poster gal for Rhythm Tengoku.  Respect the heart-shaped hair bow.

Oh man, I remember the first time I played Zelda...
Talk about unreal experience! It seemed so magical. To this day, I still think that the original Zelda, which was not story driven but pure exploration, is one of the greatest games ever!

Anyway, there's no one scene in one game that sticks in my mind more than anything else. Rather, it's the journey. I do have to wonder, will anything ever be as magical as the original PC RPGs (Might and Magic III, Ultima V & VII) and NES games? I'm thinking no...

cheers,

-avatar!

ps Shoe, I'm just curious, are you really trying to break the world record in most posts on STC? tongue

Obviously.

There are a lot of great scenes in gaming and I'd have to think for a while on what my absolute favorite would be.  Even then I might not be able to come up with just one.  The FFVI fanboy in me has to make the obligatory mention of the 'the end of the world', however.  Most RPGs merely tease you with a doomsday scenario whereas FFVI dared to push that button and have the game continue beyond it.  I wonder how many people reached for the reset button thinking that they had done something wrong?

Wanderer Aug 7, 2008

Yeah, my first time playing Super Mario Bros qualifies. ... I was killed by the very first Goomba. It made me sad.

Idolores Aug 7, 2008

My fight against Zakat in ZOE 2 is one of my favorite scenes ever. Some of the finest music to be in a boss fight, with the clouds billowing past, soaring over a ruined city and flying at supersonic speeds . . . f---ing sweet, I thought.

It's funny. So many scenes come to mind, but that is the first that hit me.

I just might..

Curious, did you ever play Princess Tomato & the Salad Kingdom?

Or what about THE UNINVITED / DEJA VU?

For variety. You'd still be able to select English/ Japanese as well, though.

Not bad for 1994, right?  We'll never see a Final Fantasy game go there again.

Megavolt Aug 7, 2008

Gotcha. ^_~

About that, you had the option of saving Cid in order to avoid that scene, which was a surprise from a gameplay standpoint.  I wish that you could've maybe seen Cid in the ending or something as a result, but it was still a nice example of open-ended gameplay (WoR = awesome), and in a JRPG at that.  FFVI remains a progressive gem in more ways than one.

If I recall, FFVI also dealt with issues like teen pregnancy and racial subjugation. Progressive indeed. Wish we could "go there *snap snap*" again.

Yeah.  FFVI had some interracial lovin' too.  Little sprites playing pelvic pinochle...it was all sparkly. tongue

Qui-Gon Joe Aug 7, 2008

The funny thing is that if Square DID go there again... the exact same issues, handled with the same amount of class, a lot of people on this board would laugh and point and say that Square was overly melodramatic and should go back to the way they were in some golden age.  tongue

I guess we won't know until they try, but there's no way that it's going to happen as long as Square keeps trying to recapture the success of FFVII.  It seems that JRPGs in general just can't get past it, and that's probably why I've had more of an interest in WRPGs for the past few years.

It doesn't deal with the exact same issues, but I thought that FFXII had class, and it's definitely my favorite Final Fantasy game since FFVII.  Balthier and Basch are a couple of my favorite characters in the series.  However, a good chunk of people didn't like the game.  They either couldn't get into the combat system, thought the story was too dry, or both.  The game wasn't perfect, but I thought it was a step in the right direction, especially considering how conventional (I should say cliched since I didn't like it, but I'll be nice) and linear FFX was.

To be fair, the other versions didn't exactly allow you to beat up "women" either.

.... Yes, I'm opening THAT can of worms again.
