Those battles are easily the worst part of the game and is part of why I don't agree with the developer-intended route - way too many run-ins with those dicks. I hate how the put them in the Chozo Ruins Furnace and Arboretum, both of which are connected to rooms that have mandatory fights. Trying to remember, but off the top of my head I think the only mandatory ones are in Tallon Life Grove, Chozo Sunchamber and Elder Chamber.
Now that I'm thinking about it, the second worst part of the game* is the overwhelming/forced battles with the Ghosts, and also with the Pirates in the Phendrana labs and Phazon Mines. I can see the Phazon Mines needing that level of "protection" since that's supposed to be the last part of the game before the final battles, but all the other fights are just annoying.
