Many years ago, American composers gained the ability to accent and amplify the mood and action of movie characters with musical soundtracks. Some time later, Japanese game composers gained this same ability with the use of digitally recorded music in CD-ROM . The interesting result in Lunar: Eternal Blue is a beautiful soundtrack much like old time movie scores. Don't let that frighten you away, though. This is still RPG music. In fact, this is some of the best music I've ever heard in my entire life, second only to the mighty Nobuo Uematsu. If you've played the game, great - the music will have an extreme emotional impact. If you haven't played the game, great - the music will still have an impact. The themes appear often in each song and really capture a certain mood and flavor that's hard to describe. There is tremendous variety in the music, too. Happy songs, sad songs, heroic songs (ooooh, they give me goosebumps!), everything! The quality of the sound is excellent, probably done on the highest quality synthesizers.
The vocals, on the other hand, I wasn't quite so impressed with. There are only two vocal pieces on the whole CD, so it shouldn't influence your decision much. The music in the vocal songs is excellent, obviously done by the same composer as the rest, but the vocals seem hollow. I don't know if it's because I don't speak Japanese or what... I know the words from the English version, but it just doesn't seem the same. However, this is probably just a Japanese style I'm unaware of. I wish I could edit out the vocals and replace them with some other instrument, because the music is still so good. One disappointment is that this is not a complete soundtrack. Instead, they opted to take many of the songs and expand a little on them. One song that, sadly, is absent is the battle theme, probably my favorite from the whole game.
This is still a spectacular CD, though. Disliking it because of the small flaws I've named is like disliking a delicious piece of cake because you think it needs more frosting. This is for all game music fans.
