has been announced.

Considering that MvC2 was easily the game I played most on the Dreamcast, I'm pretty excited. I'm thinking about wiring in a new d-pad onto my Xbox 360 controller, seeing as the default one is shit. I had much success with the Dreamcast controller, vastly preferring it to the arcade sticks on the cabinet.

I'm really hoping we see a Darkstalkers revival soon. Seeing Morrigan finally updated from the old sprite they used from Darkstalkers 1 has me wishing and hoping.

Herrkotowski Apr 20, 2010

Definitely interested in this. It'll be interesting to see the final roster (with Kotaku already speculating as to who the silhouettes on the promotional poster could be).

I'm sure opinions will be split here on the matter, but I really hope that Fukasawa was hired for this game's soundtrack as well. Although not everyone likes the character theme remixes for (Super) Street Fighter IV, I absolutely love them. With supposedly over 100 songs though, I suspect it might be a multi-composer effort though.

Jay Apr 20, 2010

It would be hilarious if they still used the old Morrigan sprite. Just for old times sake.

Adam Corn Apr 20, 2010

Could be very interested but am waiting for some real screen shots to see what the art style's like first.  I'm hoping it leans much further towards Tatsunoko vs. Capcom than it does Street Fighter IV in that regard.

Herrkotowski Apr 20, 2010

Supposedly, the art direction is similar to the character illustrations they've showcased so far, minus lighting, etc. THat's the look they are aiming for.

I keep forgetting to pick that one up. Now that I'm just starting to get the hang of Street Fighter's various mechanics in all its' incarnations (as opposed to the frenzied button mashing I never bothered growing out of when I was a kid), I'm eager to try to play these games a bit more seriously.

Idolores fun fact #1: I can't do a Dragon Punch at will.

GoldfishX Apr 20, 2010

All I gots to say...In 2000, I scrambled through two finals in community college to get home and get my next-day airmailed import Dreamcast copy of MvC2. Now I can take paid vacation days off to play the followup.

And it sounds like they are really going to fix two things I hated about the presentation in MvC 2: music and the (near-nonexistant) storyline.

That said, I'm mixed on the comic book art style so far (I prefer the classic bright anime style) and I hope the voice actors from the past games return. All of them were amazing.

Wow, this is definitely a catch-up year...Sakura Wars in the US (finally) and now MvC 3 (finally).

Maybe that Chrono Cross arrange album will finally hap--

Nah, never mind.

That's funny, when reading the news coverage the only "meh" moment I had was the part about the developers wanting the game to have a strong storyline.  My thoughts on that are 1) They're fighting a losing battle and 2) What's the point?  For a fighting game that takes place in a unified, consistent universe I am absolutely all for creating strong storylines for each character, but with these Vs. series games where you've got ridiculous combinations of characters going at it, I think it's best to just let the fighting speak for itself.

Oh and I echo Herrkotowski's sentiment about hoping to see Fukasawa return in some aspect for the music.  Besides the fact that I just love SFIV's soundtrack, I think his style of composition and arrangement would fit a kinetic action game like MvC really well - even more so than SFIV.

GoldfishX Apr 20, 2010

Ever seen MvC 2's "ending"? When I say "storyline", I simply mean like 30 seconds of snippets or some kind of conclusion after finishing the game with a character to make the 1P game at least slightly worthwhile.

I play SF4 a lot, but I've never really considered the music anything worth listening to outside of the game. I don't really find it fitting to a VS game. On the other hand, the classic Capcom CPS2 sound of MvC 1 or the first Tatsunoko game are what I'd be hoping for (but the game looks to have a more serious tone to it, so it might not be entirely fitting for the setting).

XISMZERO Apr 20, 2010 (edited Apr 20, 2010)

Wishlist of forthcoming characters that have not been featured in the Marvel Vs. Capcom series thus far? I'd like to see for the Capcom front...

Fei Long (Super Street Fighter II)
Sagat (Street Fighter II)
Dan Smith (Killer7)
Ulmeyda (Killer7)
Leon S. Kennedy (RE2, 4)
Krauser (RE4)
Wesker (RE)
Super Joe (Bionic Commando)
Dante (Devil May Cry)
Mega Man X (Mega Man X)
Mike Haggar (Final Fight)
Cody (Final Fight)
Rolento (Final Fight)
Dimitri (Darkstalkers)
Phoenix Wright (Phoenix Wright)
Miles Edgeworth (Phoenix Wright)
Godot (Phoenix Wright)
Frank West (Dead Rising)

As for the Marvel, don't ask me I don't really follow Marvel too closely, I just want Gambit.

EDIT: Yay for Dante and Frank West confirmed! Double yay for awesome Shinkiro art poster (but this isn't his first venture drawing Marvel Super Heroes).

Amazingu Apr 20, 2010

@XISMZERO: People have already picked the entire trailer apart and looked at the official artwork so far, and lots of people are pointing out that some of the shadows in the background look like Frank West and Dante.

Frank West would not be surprising, considering he's in Tatsunoko vs. Capcom.
In fact, since the visual style is probably going to be similar, I'm expecting pretty much all Capcom characters from TvC to make it into MvC3.

Zero has to be in there, or I'll go ballistic.
And I'd much prefer Megaman X over any other form of Megaman.
Any other characters from the MM universe are extremely welcome (Sigma please! And maybe Vile).

We're already getting Chris Redfield, but Leon would be nice too.
I'm fully expecting Wesker too though, and maybe the return of Jill. Sheva would make sense too, I guess.

A gazillion Awesome Points to Capcom if they throw in RE4's merchant.

And hey, considering that Capcom did a shitload of Disney games and Marvel now belongs to that very same company, maybe we can expect Uncle Scrooge, Chip 'n' Dale and Darkwing Duck as well wink

Idolores Apr 20, 2010

Throw me Servbot and I'm a happy guy. He's so fun to whoop up on dudes with.

When it comes to Sigma, I kind of have to say HELL NO. I don't know what it is about Sigma, but I hate him. Well, more specifically, the longer the X series went on the more I hated him, but I didn't hate him in how you’re suppose to hate a good villain.

Speaking of Sigma, the Mega Man Official Complete Works says Doc Robot from Mega Man III was the inspiration behind the character. You can see a lot of Sigma in the character, but I've always thought Sigma was born out of Sagat from Street Fighter - the stature - the chin! Anyone else think of Sagat when confronted by Sigma?

Just for a lark, me and a friend of mine went up against each other with a party of 3 Servbots against 3 Sentinels (I think you had to unlock everything to be able to choose the same 3 characters for your party).

I got the Servbots and I got creamed so quickly it wasn't even funny.
MvC2 was a great game, but balanced it was not.

I think of him as Mecha Bison, actually. The stature! The chin! The grin! The cape! The voice!

Hmmm... yeah, I guess I can see that as well, if we're talking post-Alpha no-carbs Bison.

I like the 2D look of both the characters and the backgrounds.  Just a little worried you won't be able to see them with all those crazy effects going on though.  (Check out the massive clouds of dust those guys are kicking up.)

GoldfishX May 29, 2010

Pretty sure that won't be an issue. Normally these type of games, the effects go by so quick you barely notice them. MvC 2 screenshots were the same way (they looked more more chaotic standing still than they did in motion...having both players do their 3-man team attack looks cool for screenshots, but is totally impractical in actual gameplay).

Idolores May 29, 2010 (edited May 29, 2010)

I'm not sure I like the look of the game. That shot of Iron Man doing his special reminds me of bad early Playstation 1 CGI.

Adam Corn Sep 28, 2010

I played several rounds of this at TGS a couple weeks back playing Ryu, Chun Li, Morrigan, Felicia, Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Wolverine and Dr. Doom.

It is, in a word, FUN.  I love the four-button control scheme - especially when playing on PS3 and 360 game pads as most people will (not sure where even the fourth, "air combo" button would really be that necessary but I'm a MvC newb).  Both the art and animation look fantastic - I found myself thinking once again while playing how much I prefer the art for Ryu and Chun Li in this over Street Fighter IV.

It gets so crazy on occasion it's hard to keep up with the action, especially when the screen gets zoomed in super-close (I could have swore Thor took up 2/3 of the screen once) and your opponent is off-screen, or during the character switches.  But that was also a part of the visceral thrill of the action and I imagine seasoned players will have no problem keeping up.

Along with Castlevania Lords of Shadow this was for myself the most impressive game of the show and a certain release day purchase.  (As well as possibly added incentive to get MvC2 now that I have a PS3.)

Make sure you play against someone else if you play at all. For some reason the CPU is absolutely nuts in that version even on the easiest difficulty setting.

As far as MvC3 goes, I'm still waiting on the confirmation of certain characters before I commit to it.

A. Spiderman/Hayato/SonSon were my go-to team in the second game, and
B. I want some joke characters on principle.

Hayato

You know, I'm glad they didn't forget about this guy. Still, I'd like to see more characters from the series (like June or Zelkin) appear.

Star Gladiator and Plasma Sword are on my current "to get" list. I never played Plasma Sword but the first game was really underappreciated IMO. My question is why didn't they call Plasma Sword Star Gladiator 2? It's not like the first game was so bad that you'd want to avoid the immediate relationship between the titles.

GoldfishX Sep 28, 2010

I'm happy with how the game has developed so far, gameplay-wise. It should turn out to be solid, although I see things already that are going to be dominant in play (Trish looks like a monster and reports say she is easily one of the best characters). At this point, I am glued to the new character announcements. There's been a couple disappointments thus far...the ony characters that really interest me on the Capcom side are Amaterasu (looks amazing) and the DMC pair. I really hope Frank West (rumored, since he was in Tatsunoko vs Capcom) is not tying up a character slot and we see some really classic Capcom characters (Classic Megaman, Zero -who WAS in TvC-, Strider and Arthur, who is heavily rumored to be in). I like Tron, but I can tell she is going to be one of the weaker characters if she doesn't have her 40% damage assist from MvC2 (she was never that good on point), but at least her inclusion means we're more likely to see another Megaman incarnation instead of the lame MM Legends version from TvC.

Of course for Marvel, there are many characters people are still waiting for, but their choices have all been solid. X23 looks like she is going to be a lot of fun, despite this being the first I've heard of her. Considering the dominance of Marvel in the previous game, it would be shocking to not see at least Storm and Magneto (I've resigned myself that Cable will not make the cut). The new incarnations of Doctor Doom and Spidey seem much improved overall (Spidey can attack out of a web swing and combo into Maximum Spider...YES!)

I'm glad to hear character themes again and the stages are actually relevant to both universes, unlike the random locales in MvC2 (the MM Legends stage looks amazing with the fireworks).

XLord007 Nov 26, 2010

I love the idea of these games, but I don't like the way they play compared to SF, so I will be passing on this until it gets cheap.
