I watched Gladiator again after a few years.  It remains one of my favorite movies still.  However, there's on scene at the end that isn't fully explained.

Ever since Commodus killed his father, Quintis became loyal to him over Maximus, being as though Commodus was the new emporer.  But during the final fight scene between Maximus and Commodus, Quintis refuses to give Commodus a sword when he asks for it.  Why?

I tried to get an answer on the net, and I came across this quote:

These are crucial scenes. One in particular is the Pretorian execution which is vital for showing why Quintis would not order his Pretorians to give Commodus a sword at the end.

So what exactly is this scene?  I was thinking that maybe Quintis really had enough of Commodus' cowardice after he had stab Maximus in the lung prior to the battle.  But it seems like there's more to it.
