Speaking of holding out for new games, I got an email from Squeenix talking about some new game called "Nanashi no GEEMU." Being that I can't read/understand Japanese for squat, I had to rely on the pictures. It LOOKED like a horror game, but then I scrolled further down and all of a sudden saw game screens that looked exactly in the style of Final Fantasy 1. And I thought, "What the...?"

So off I went to the Intarwebz and found some intriguing bits on the premise of the game, plus trailers. And for some reason, I'm almost drawn to play it -- if it ever comes out in English, at least. And I don't even LIKE playing horror games. I think my brain is finally fried.

The plot is so cliché for Japanese horror at this point, but in a game, it sounds pretty cool.  I like the random NES-type glitching that appears to happen during the game-in-a-game.  This had better darn well come out in English.  It's nice to see Square trying new things.

True! Why do all Japanese horror games involve young girls? In fact, MANY things Japanese (from their RPGs to anime, manga) all involve young girls. I guess that stuff like that just sells the best in Japan, which makes me wonder if Japanese society is in some ways quite repressive? Any one know? Any Japanese scholars out there? At any rate, yup, very cliche, but might be cool. Also, I had no idea Squeenix was into trying new things. I thought that went against their principle!

After seeing the trailer I'm certainly interested!  The music almost sounded like something Junya Nakano would have done, which would be awesome to see him do a horror game OST.  Another Mind was fantastic.

It's funny that you'd say that in a year with more original properties from Square than any I can remember since the "Summer of Adventure" (The World Ends with You, Sigma Harmonics, Nanashi no Game, Yosumin, Infinite Undiscovery, and The Last Remnant are all new franchises I can think of so far).  I'm as annoyed with them as anyone about whoring out the Final Fantasy franchise, but it's just so bizarre to me that there's been a lot of hate on this board towards them for it right when they seem to be turning around from that.

How many of those have hit US soil? If I'm not mistaken just the World thing. Otherwise, I see nothing new in the Squeenix horizon here in the US.

Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery will be coming out in the U.S.; be patient and give them some time.

Your first sentence indicates you want them to already be out.  Your second sentence indicates you want them to be coming out in the future.  Where are you headed here?  I'm pretty sure most of those are going to make it out in the US at some point, but half of them aren't out in Japan yet.  The Last Remnant is actually coming out in the US first, as I recall, but in general translation takes some time.

I didn't know if any of them were coming out to the US at all, so more curious than anything else. Personally, I  have very little faith in Squeenix today. During the SNES days I felt anything they touched turned to gold, now I feel like they keep rehashing the same thing. I will wait and see of course before deciding on any game, but as mentioned, I'm not getting my hopes up. By the way, I never played the World game. It seems to have gotten some good reviews, but then I heard from others that it wasn't anything new nor special. Have people here played it?
