I already made a post about it in the "Gaming" forum, but I just snagged the game today, and am having a total blast with it.  So far, Asuka Ota's score has been pretty stellar; appropriately Mario in tone, and a solid mixing of old and new themes.  The new main theme/overworld theme has definitely grown on me, but it's the castle theme that's totally won me over.  I did up a recording of the castle theme, as well as two different variations of the new main theme.  I'll see if I can't get more out to you guys as I progress through the game:

NSMB - Overworld 1
NSMB - Overworld 2
NSMB - Castle

---

EDIT: A big ol' thanks to Dais for uploading all the recordings in this thread into one 77MB zip file.  Grab them from either link:

Out of curiosity, is there a way of knowing for sure which tracks Ota wrote and which Kondo wrote?  I recall an interview in which Kondo said he was doing some of the music but Ota was doing the majority.  Also, that castle theme *is* pretty neat.  Don't have time to listen to the other two right now before work though... plus I think I might want to hear most of it in-game.  Grr... the extra 10 day wait to get the game over here is killing me!!

GoldfishX May 16, 2006

I'm thinking "Illusionary Dance" (SOTN/Drac X) about the Castle theme. Maybe "Gothic Neclord" (Suikoden 2) even a bit...Both very welcome comparisons. I can hear traces of previous Mario themes in both overworlds...The opening for Overworld 1 sounds like it's going to go into the Mario 3 ending. And Overworld 2 is dangerously close to the Mario 2 main level music.

Overall, good stuff...DS synth sounds pretty nice in general. Can't wait to get my hands on a copy of the game (the stores around here actually didn't get shipments today...I tried two Gamestops...Unreal)

What interview?

Couldn't say; are you sure you heard that Kondo was actually composing?  I can see him, at most, being co-credited for his original pieces. (To which I'm counting about eight of them so far.)  Short of completing the game and viewing the credits, I'm assuming that both their names will just be listed under Music Credits. Will let you know.

Is it really that bad?  I'm just thinking that anything but that awful Yahoo! Briefcase is better for mass sharing.

With that, here's a few more.  Of particular interest is "Mario vs Luigi," the theme for the versus mini-game and my favorite variation of the NSMB main theme yet, and "Tropical Overworld," which actually takes its cue from the Super Mario Land theme!  As for the "Boss Battle," I unfortunately had to record the sound effects.  I did try to compensate by choosing a relatively low key battle, with minimal sound FX. (The World 3 boss.)

NSMB - Boss Battle
NSMB - Mario vs Luigi
NSMB - Underground
NSMB - Underwater
NSMB - Tropical Overworld

Edit: oops, I apparently said above that it was an interview with Kondo, when it clearly was not.  As usual, this is what I get for posting to STC first thing in the morning.  tongue

I guess we can take the comment about Kondo doing part of the soundtrack with a grain of salt, as this is where it was also reported that the koopa kids would be back (although on the latter I was dubious from the get-go considering we'd seen nothing of them and there are about a billion ways to screw up translating that question and answer combo when translating an interview from Japanese to English).

Thanks Angela smile

I'm so in love with Overworld 1, the main theme and this arrangement is amazing! Perfect for a Mario game.
Boss was also wonderfully re-arranged. I really liked Asuka Ota's work in Four Swords Adventures though his own compositions were the minority.. If I remember correctly. But anyway.

It could, once again, be that Kondo didn't write any new music for NSMB and Ota just arranged a few of his ancient (but good) songs while composing his own. Don't know. He can't be working on Twilight Princess any longer, can he...?

Oh..

That's right..

Super Mario Galaxy.

Angela May 17, 2006

That's a definite negative on the koopa kids.  A real shame, too, as they could've added some spice to each of the eight worlds' mini-fortress towers, instead of having to fight Bowser Jr. over and over again.

Nine more up today.  The Worlds 1-4 is a zip file with the first four world map themes; once I get to the eighth and last world, I'll upload the remaining four in a similar manner:

NSMB - Title
NSMB - Desert Overworld
NSMB - Ghost House
NSMB - Tower (Mini-Fortress)
NSMB - Mario vs Luigi 2
NSMB - Worlds 1-4

I have to wonder if Nintendo has decided to drop the Koopalings as canon.  It seems Bowser Jr. has been chosen to be the true offspring of Bowser.  Bowser Jr. has appeared in a number of games.

Qui-Gon Joe May 17, 2006

I don't think they've completely dropped the Koopa kids... they do show up in Mario & Luigi.

Angela May 17, 2006

Beat the game just moments ago, and the credits verify that Kondo was "Sound Director," while Ota and Hajime Wakai were composers.  Tsk, now I feel awful for not properly ID-tagging Wakai for artist credit.  >_<

Ten more tracks, and ultimately, the final batch of recordings I'll be doing -- I think that's just about everything as far as NSMB material goes.  Again, like the castle boss battle theme, sound effects were unavoidable for the Bowser Jr. one.  Some sound effects plague the beginning of "Bowser's Lair Overworld" as well, but it was the only way I could retain its intro.   I also need to find some other way to record the final battle with Bowser, because there's WAY too much going on there to get a good recording.  Likewise, I might go back and record the straight NES-sounding Mario pieces later.

NSMB - Worlds 5-8
NSMB - Mini Mario
NSMB - Bowser's Lair Overworld
NSMB - Boss Battle (Bowser Jr.)
NSMB - Stage Clear
NSMB - Complete Victory
NSMB - End Credits

Or just combine them all into one Rapidshare DL.

Gonna have to leave that up to you guys.  Still being on 56K, it's just easier for me to upload each track separately, without fear of one large upload getting cut off.

I can't believe my area doesn't offer DSL or broadband.  Maybe I should just go cable.....

When I click the link to upload the tracks, I don't know what to do next.  There's a space and two 'upload' boxes but I don't know what to do with those.

Hit the link, head to the bottom, on 'Select your download' hit 'Free,' wait for your download-ticket reserved to tick down (usually 20-30 seconds), and then a pop-up giving you the option to "save to disk" should appear.  (If not, just right-click on the link they provide, and right-click 'Save Link As.')  Sometimes it'll link you to a mirror site, in which case you'll want to make sure you have the 'Load Images/Show Pictures' option enabled on your browser so that you can gain the access code.  Just punch that code in, and hit 'Download from Mirror...'

By the way, here's one more track that I neglected:

NSMB - Mega Mario

Nice job Angela!  I was able to put down the game for a few minutes to download your rip and it sounds great, thanks a lot for doing it.

My fave tracks so far:

Overworld 1 (wah!)
Overworld 2 (wah! wah!)
Tropical Overworld
Underground
Castle

Now, back to being addicted to NSMB..

You could record the boss battles several times from the game... then edit clean segments together. Because I imagine the boss will do different things differently depending on what you do, so you could make certain spots during different recording times that have SFX at different places during the music.

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks,
~Andy

Majario at Gamingforce is doing a 52 (I think) track rip of NSMB. From what I understand I think that theres a sound test available for the game once its been beaten completely
