Unconfirmed: A hybrid system (handheld + console) powered by Nvidia's Tegra. The power is between a Wii U and an XBOX One.

If true: This is really annoying for me because it once again leaves Nintendo a generation behind its competitors in hardware. Really not pleased.

I do not care to play any serious immersive game like a Metroid Prime on a handheld. Nintendo has perverted their 'quality over quantity' philosophy by combining, quantizising, and mediocritizing their console with a handheld. I know it's hard for them to accept that the handheld market is now the cellphone, but it shouldn't be hard for them to realize they needed cutting-edge technology to make better console games than Sony and Microsoft.

Lots of people would disagree with this.  You don't even need superior graphics capability to make an aesthetically beautiful or fun game (one example would be Okami).

True, but then again if that's really the case then there is no need for developers to update their hardware. What that view leads to is death. Nintendo fans used to shit on PS1 and PS2 graphics. This "graphics don't matter" weak ideology is from the Wii-era where Nintendo sold out. Graphics and hardware matters. You can't produce Okami on PS1, and if you want to produce Okami 2 then having a more powerful console is beneficial not detrimental to the game.

I love the idea that Nintendo sold out. Like they were better back when they were underground. Until Nintendo show anything, this all just feels like speculation but I've had a suspicion that they weren't showing anything because they had very little to show. When the NX was first mentioned, it seemed to be nothing more than an attempt to get shareholders to hang in there. I suspect whatever the NX will turn out to be, it will be rushed and won't have the early support needed. And I don't think Nintendo will get the third party support back at all - that ship has well and truly sailed unless Nintendo themselves throw endless money at devs (maybe they will).

But then a system doesn't have to beat its competitors to be commercially viable so it might do okay.

Then....don't?

The first suspicion that came to my mind about the NX is that it might be backwards compatible with the DS and 3DS library, allowing people to play them on a large HDTV. Since it's rumored to handle cartridges, or SD cards, this seems logical.

Logical is not how Nintendo works though, so I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Anything's possible, but the above is unlikely since the NX is rumored to be using an entirely different chipset from the DS and 3DS. They might support those systems through Virtual Console emulation, however.
