Way I'm going to do this up is, my first post is going to be a game review for those who haven't played it yet; I'm going to then submit a second post which will all be plot discussion for those who've already played it, and will thus contain spoilers.

Finished this game about a month ago, but haven't had a chance to compose my thoughts and write about it up until now.

Between the gratuitous violence, gratuitous profanity, and how the characters are so casual about killing, the game rather reminds me of Kill Bill, if not Quentin Tarantino movies in general; the whole Western/South-Western Californian setting also furthers the comparison

PLOT

You play the role of badass otaku rockstar-like dude, Travis Touchdown; one day, he won a beam katana on an internet auction, and decided upon a new career: ASSASSIN. Then, he happens to Sylvia Crystal, a chick from the United Assassins Association, and offers Travis the opportunity to fight his way up the ladder of the world's ten best assassins. Guess who wants to be the best?

GAMEPLAY

Moves

First off, the game starts off with an assassination mission, and you're immediately tutored (if you choose to be) in all of the basic moves in the game: You have low stances and high stances (determined whether you hold the Wiimote horizontal or vertical in relative to the TV), and for both stances, you have slash attacks, beat attacks (kick/punch), charged slashes, and charged beats; A button for Slashes, B buttons for beats, and hold down those buttons for their respective charge attacks, and release; you also have wrestling moves; beat a stunned enemy to initiate a wrestling move, then swing the Wiimote and Nunchuk together in tandem according to the combination given on screen.

Then you have deathblow attacks; when an enemy is at the last inch of their life during your combo attack, you get to swing the Wiimote in a random direction (as specified on screen) to finish them off; if you swing is successful, then slot machine reels will spin; when you match up three of the same reel, you'll achieve its corresponding "Dark Side" mode, in which you gain some semblance of invincibility, and you gain the ability to kill enemies instantly by using a Wiimote-waving technique according to the slots you matched up.

The boss fights, of course, are the highlight of the game, and in the same vein of Devil May Cry; you have to watch the enemies movements, and look for a good time to strike; weak points aren't the obvious, puzzle-like shticks that Zelda games offer; in other words, it's more slash-happy, and more so trial-and-error. Which I like. Essentially, it's a hack n' slash game, with life sim elements added in for good measure and originality.

Between Missions: Part-Time Jobs and Earning Money

Between missions, you're in town, running whatever errands you need to, and working part-time jobs to earn money to pay entrance fees for the next assassination mission; part-time jobs are little mini-game events: You'll be doing things like coconut-collecting, lawn-mowing, mine-sweeping, gas station attendant, stuff like that. There are also side-assassination missions you can do to earn money; you can repeat your favorite jobs to earn the money you need.

Rolling around town will probably remind you of Grand Theft Auto; granted, you'll never have to steal cars, because you already have a motorcycle, and it's bigger and more powerful than any other car would be!

Customize your Character!

You can also use your money to upgrade your character, by buying new Beam Katanas and related equipment from Dr. Naomi's Beam Katana Laboratory, hip new clothes to customize your character at Area 51, train your character and improve stats at Thunder Ryu's...and those are just a few things you can do to further trick out your character.

SOUNDTRACK

The soundtrack, as is befitting of the game, has a very modern sound, including styles like jazz, rock, and techno. The assassination missions and boss battle themes form the meat of the soundtrack; the mission themes are essentially variations on the same theme, but that's okay, because it's an awesome theme! The boss battle themes REALLY rock out, though!

My only gripe, is that they should've put more jazz into it; pieces like "Fork in the Wall" (Sylvia's theme), "Walk Like This," and "Hot Dreams" were all very good, but too short, and more jazz would've been even better! Another thing was how many themes were 5-6 minutes long on the soundtrack album; they must've repeated 3-4 times each! Most of the time, I end up skipping forward when 2.5 minutes of the track have played, because it's repeated at least twice by then. The soundtrack album did NOT need to be 3 discs long!

Well, that's about it for the review...let's move onto the spoilers!

ABOUT THOSE SIDE-JOBS...

My biggest gripe about the game is probably about working side-jobs to pay for an "Entrance Fee" to an assassination mission; I would've like it better if you had to do detective work yourself to find out where each assassin was, and your search also providing character details about each assassin. I found it odd that Travis would sympathize with each of them, even though he knew next to nothing about each of them. Besides, each assassin was an interesting character, and a play on a specific character archetype; I would've liked it better if their characters were more fleshed out.

What's more, is how most of the assassin's locations are quite close to each other; unless you're looking for Lovikov balls, you really don't have any reason to go through more than maybe a 1/8 of the town; there're no assassination missions north of the river that cuts through the north end of town, much less any shops! I'm just saying the assassin locations could've been better spread out.

And some of the locations are used twice: the subway for Destroy Man and Harvey (the magician), and the baseball stadium for Dr. Peace and Bad Girl.

ABOUT THE ASSASSINS THEMSELVES

Letz Shake: I was disappointed by this guy; Sylvia mentions this guy when she's dancing at a disco, and knowing Sylvia, she's never too far away from your prey, so I thought I'd be fighting my way through a bunch of raver kids at a disco, especially with a name like "Letz Shake," but what we got was long, blank, seemingly endless hallway full of Darth Vader impersonators, and then when we finally reach Letz, they build the suspense up with his pet WMD, and then some other guy finishes him off for us! Speaking of that Irish guy, whatever happened to him, anyway?!

Harvey: His assistants must've not really liked him at all, if they tied him down and cut him in half after you defeated him. I also wish his level was more fleshed out; I expected to fight my way through the theatre, as opposed to just taking the subway, and then you step into the theatre and into a boss fight.

Speed Buster: An old shopping cart lady with a WMD...who took out an entire city. When Sylvia said SB was a witch, (1) I thought that was a weird name for a witch, (2) I was expecting a magical girl, (3) When your cat leaves the house, I thought she was the assassin, and was going to transform from her! Otherwise, with a name like "Speed Buster," I would've expected a Speed Racer parody! I would've also liked it if they'd made more of a dungeon out of Speed City. It's kind of like, they got tired of designing levels after the fourth mission (Destroy Man).

Bad Girl: She's...twisted; an angry blonde Lolita chick with a baseball bat is second best, even after Speed Buster?! My only guess is because she practices by batting the heads off of people, although, where she gets those people in the first place will forever remain a mystery...

Dark Star: A gothic mix on the Darth Vader archetype... "Welcome to my castle!...Grrrkkk!" (Dies) Wow, I guess someone doesn't like gothic Darth Vader archetypes...and there I was, already and set to fight him, too...that laser dragon whip of his looked awesome. And the battlefield? That was some sort of metaphysical setting out of Evangelion...in one word: AWEXOME. Still, the whole boss-dies-before-you-get-a-chance-to-fight-him shtick was getting old. Dark Star was far too regal to be a lowly assassin; but how'd he manage #1, when he just got killed so easily?!

ANTICS IN TOWN

I found it odd how easy it is to get away with a kill in Santa Destroy, even though there're actually cops patrolling the streets. I thought the town could've provided greater interactivity; I mean, there's no "Bowling for cars" in this game; your motorcycle just kind of jerks when you try to blindside a vehicle, and you can only run over things like trees, poles, and stuff like that, while you can't go bowling through tables, or much of anything else. You could even run over people, and they'd still survive in one piece, and just run away!

...

Well, I think those are all the gripes and spoilerific things I had to say about the game...

Better buy all the Beam Katanas, boyo. There's a Real Ending to be had.

P.S. I thought the Letz Shake bit was the funniest thing I've seen in a game this year, but that's just me.

Damn, you beat me to it!  Watched the trailer and had to go change my pants.

I can't believe they're making a sequel.  The game didn't even sell well!  What the hell?  AWESOME.

It seems to have sold well outside of Japan though.

Nice.  I'm looking forward to Loganberry Vanilla Danishes next.

Yeah, the game must've had some legs in US and Europe.

But hellz yeah!

And to think the day before all the news headlines regarding Suda 51 were pertaining to some game using the Unreal Engine, IIRC.  Then comes this outta nowhere!

I heard rumors of a sequel some time ago; glad they're following up.

Nice how their Beam Katanas ACTUALLY look like Katanas this time around, and not long, flourescent lightbulbs...

"Desperate Struggle?" Sounds like a damn well generic subtitle; they could've used the subtitle to parody another movie title or subtitle, but they just give us something so generic-sounding...?

Arcubalis wrote:

That's true, it's plummeted in price like no other Wii game has...but...just...why...?!

Why didn't NMH sell well? Because of "LOLOMGs, Wiises is knots fore Em-Wrated gameses???!!!111ONE1ON?E!!!"

If you played the first game, you would know that the beam katanana shown in the trailer is actually the last, most refined version you receive in the original game.

Zorbfish Oct 13, 2008

Wow, a sequel?! Perhaps this one will get more of a budget to play with this time around then...

Ehh, see, I never did all that extra work to get that last Katana...

Kenology Oct 14, 2008

If I'm not mistaken, NMH was Suda's best selling game ever.  Would make sense that it'd get a sequel if that's true.
