Some thoughts on this month's releases...

The Greatest Video Game Music
I'm not pleased with the crowded track list or the apparent re-use of the ancient Orchestral Game Concert arrangements for the likes of Mario and Zelda, and judging from the short Amazon samples the FPS pieces sound tremendously dull.  That said Angry Birds sounds surprisingly good and if "Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty Theme" is the original MGS theme in full orchestral glory the album might be worth the 10 bucks.

Halo Anniversary OST
So reportedly the entire Halo soundtrack has been orchestrated and performed by the Skywalker Symphony for this new double-disc edition.  The only Halo soundtrack I've listened to was Reach and it left me unimpressed, but maybe this is worth a look.

Cafe SQ
The samples on the official album page (which once again are a pain to navigate) are mostly mediocre and the producers don't seem to have stuck to the cafe theme very closely.  I'm all about that big band arrangement of FFVI Johnny C Bad though.

Sonic the Hedgehog CD OST
Never heard either the Japan or the U.S. version but am curious if the former lives up to the hype.

Zelda 25th Anniversary Symphony CD
Reports from the concert have been positive but I'm skeptical.  Any word on whether this will include the full concert recording or just a few selections?

Considering that the Sons of Liberty Theme is the MGS2 Main Theme -- which in itself is the original Metal Gear Solid Main Theme -- then I'd say it's a go.

Aside from that, I'm all set with the Uncharted 3 Original Video Game Soundtrack.  I'm pleased that they've afforded this a two-disc release.  (As a heads-up, that Piggyback's Collector's Edition Official Guide CD features four exclusive tracks not featured on neither the digital nor the two-disc release.)

I was already highly disappointed by Cafe SQ once I looked at the tracklist, since about 70 to 80 of it was from the old numbered Final Fantasies and Chrono, which kinda sucked and was incredibly predictable. The only interesting choice was Dewprism, but I've never heard the soundtrack and I also generally dislike the composer behind the score. I like the sample of "Suteki da ne" though.

Geez, no wonder you get so annoyed when I hate on modern VGM. tongue

Speaking of which, wish there was more this month I was interested in, but alas...I've heard both Sonic CD for the US and Japan and I was never too fond of it, compared to the straight up Genesis scores. Hopefully the CD release has some mastering done vs a straight rip from the game CD.

Deus Ex HR has good music. That main theme "Icarus" is some of the best Western RPG score I've heard in awhile.

For shame!  Dew Prism has a fantastic, lighthearted soundtrack and is easily Nakano's best work.  It's also an awesome game with one of the best, if not the best, game character ever created (http://bit.ly/tWI1ab).  As you can see, I'm totally not biased here. wink

I fully endorse the previous post.

I haven't played the game yet (picked it up a while back) but not too big on the soundtrack. That said it does strike me as something that would work better in context.

.. but sadly the Dew Prism excerpt doesn't sound quite right.

Agreed, it seems off by a bit.

I am playing Skyrim and the music is amazing.

I wasn't blown away by the music in Oblivion, but Skyrim's soundtrack is just excellent.. beautifully orchestrated too.
