No one should be surprised, but it's still an absolutely fantastic feeling to get the official confirmation:

SAN MATEO, Calif - April 13, 2007 - Capcom®, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced Phoenix Wright™: Ace Attorney™ Trials and Tribulations for Nintendo DS™. The third installment in the popular courtroom battle series from Japan features the completion of Phoenix Wright's story, as players explore both the past and present of the idiosyncratic lawyer. Capcom plans to release Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations in North America in September 2007.

"Ace Attorney has developed an avid, devoted fan base in both Japan and North America," said Jack Symon, director, brand marketing, Capcom Entertainment. "Trials and Tribulations is being brought to North America due to the strong demand from fans for another epic courtroom battle."

In Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations players star as a defense attorney, who must prove a seemingly guilty client's innocence no matter how dire the circumstances may seem. Phoenix will face the toughest prosecutor yet as the mysterious hard-boiled "Godot" will try to take him down at any cost. The complete story of Phoenix Wright comes together as truths are revealed in twisting storylines and intriguing gameplay. Players must collect evidence, survey crime scenes, weed through inconsistent testimonies, and overcome corrupt agendas to ensure that justice prevails. With the return of the popular "pysche-lock" interrogation tool from the previous title, Phoenix Wright™: Ace Attorney™ Justice for All, players will have to overcome even more intense courtroom standoffs in order to close the case.

Fantastic news, along with the announcement of Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. I still haven't finished JFA yet, but it's good to know that I'll be able to experience the conclusion of the trilogy in English.

Carl Apr 14, 2007

Nice, I just finished JFA last week, so this is great news.

XLord007 Apr 15, 2007

I haven't started JFA yet, but I'll be sure to finish it before the third one comes out.  I like the accelerated release date as well.  Hopefully we won't have to wait too far into 2008 to get GS4.  As for Harvey Birdman, I've never seen the show, but I'm curious to see what Capcom plans on doing.  I'm also curious as to why Capcom is putting that one on the PS2 and PSP and not DS.

In other Phoenix Wright news, the soundtrack to Gyakuten Saiban 4 was announced for a June 27th release.  There's a definite Mega Man vibe coursing through a lot of the songs, especially in the new "Examination ~ Allegro" and "Investigation ~ Cornered."  Toshihiko Horiyama's worked on a number of the "X" titles, right?

Here are some recorded samples, courtesy of Final Turnabout:

Toshihiko Horiyama was one of the multiple composers for X1 and X3; he did all of X4, which I thought was one of the series best musical outings... lots of great themes in X4.

Capcom's announced the Japanese DS version of PW3/GS3, which once again is set as a BEST PRICE title, and will boast the dual language English/Japanese option.  Its release is set for August 23rd:

Well, at least the JP release date is closer to the U.S. one, so the desire to import won't be so bad.

Yeah, I'll wait for the U.S. release.  I still have to play PW2 first anyway.

I'm flying cross country in a couple weeks, so I should be able to put some time into it then.

Just thought I'd plug this: Gamestop's having a sale ATM and the original Phoenix Wright is selling for $20 brand new (there are a whole bunch of other ones, but PW was one of maybe 3 that was worth anything). I went into 2 stores today and both had stacks of them out in the open. Just a heads up for anyone who hasn't grabbed it yet. Surprising, considering how hard they were to come by a year or so ago.

I saw that and was also surprised. I guess they overcompensated for the initial shortages.

BTW, the same sale also has Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks and Musashi: Samurai Legend for $10 each. I picked up MK and am pleasantly surprised by how enjoyable the game is. It's button-mashing fun!

I played up to the third case a few months ago, but for some reason I haven't been compelled to finish it yet. The writing just doesn't seem as sharp as the first game. Although, I'm probably just thinking that because I subconsciously know the localization team is different. There are still some things mentioned in the earlier cases that make me want to finish the game eventually (What happened to him?), but I think the third game will be more up my alley since it purportedly answers some of the mysteries set up in the first game.

Also, the successor to Phoenix Wright is supposedly... Apollo Justice. There's been some outcry over it, but I like it enough. Plus, there's a good chance his nickname will be my real first name ^_^

Looks like it's official: "Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney" it is, as this picture of series producer Minae Matsukawa at the recently-held Japan Expo in Paris ascertains:

That PW4 has officially been announced for European territories means that we'll likely hear something about a North American release as well.  2008, at the earliest?  The question now, though, is if Europe will be getting PW3?

Angela Jul 14, 2007

The new E3 '07 PW3 trailer!  It's an extention of the first teaser-esque trailer back in April, and is more in line with the previous two games' trailers.

All hail the return of the BUTZ!!

Jay Aug 22, 2007

Ooh! My copy has shipped. I'm positively giddy! Just a few more days of waiting for more Phoenix Wright goodness.

Jay Aug 24, 2007

And now it's here. Sitting at work with my DS at home. Gah!

Angela Aug 24, 2007 (edited Aug 24, 2007)

Yep, my copy apparently came in yesterday as well.  Been out of town, so I'll have some impressions (and a music medley sample recording) up when I get back later today.

Jay Aug 24, 2007

Well I've just played the first section of the first case. So far, it's all standard stuff and more of a tutorial, like all the first cases. This is set in the past though, which sees Payne sporting actual hair.

Music seems better than 2 already, though it still has that old GB sound chip quality.

Angela Aug 24, 2007

I'm about halfway through the second case myself, and so far, everything looks to be on point.   The same touch-interface and control scheme that was adapted from the first two DS entries remain unchanged, as does the voice microphone capability.  The English translation, once again, was done up by the Capcom in-house localization team.  I think they've gotten a bit more confident and comfortable with the writing; it's a solid translation overall, while pop culture references make a return with some pretty clever homages this time around.  (My current favorite is Gumshoe's description of Godot: "He's a real ice man, a maverick."  I know that's a Top Gun citation, but I can't help but think they were giving a little nod to Mega Man as well.)  ;)  Character mannerisms have remained consistent, though it's a shame to see Phoenix carry over his dry, witless personality from PW2, and not his keen, more sharply-observant self from PW1.  If ever they needed Alex Smith's contribution again, it definitely should've gone to punching up Phoenix's dialogue.

Unfortunately, typos and grammatical errors are evident; nothing major so far that has hurt the experience, though others who already finished the game concedes that the proofreading feels even less polished than PW2.  I guess that's the price to pay for getting the game out so quickly...... In any case, one hopes that it'll be fixed up for the domestic releases.

Young Mia and Godot now have new voices.  I felt they didn't capture Franziska's English voice for PW2 quite right, but comparatively, Mia's is a lot better.  Her "OBJECTION!" still sounds a tad silly, but her "TAKE THAT!" and (especially) "HOLD IT!" are spot-on great.  Godot, on the other hand, turned out..... eh.  For a guy who practically defines the meaning of "cool," he just sounds unabashedly goofy.  Someone said that he sounds like he has a mouth full of marshmallows.  I have to agree.  *_*

And the music. Been anxiously waiting for the upgraded score, and while it's not as newly refined as the first two games, there are notable differences to be heard.  Like before, the sound fidelity sounds crisper and clearer here on the DS than on the GBA, and the deeper and more robust sounding bass and drum samples benefit nicely.  Some of the alterations of the original midi, however, I feel are questionable choices, particularly on some of the higher tonal instruments.  (That backing string synth in "Examination ~ Allegro," for instance, is on a jarring new pitch.)  Some will argue that PW3 was the most sophisticated in terms of GBA instrument quality, thereby forgoing the need for much enhancement, but certain elements seem to be almost exactly the same to the point where some of the sounds are out of place against the updated sonic quality of the DS version.

Like PW2 before it, PW3 also brings back certain songs and themes that have remained series staples, like Auspicious People, Gumshoe's Theme, and the Suspense theme.  PW3 also culls a few from PW2 as well, such as Trick And Magic, Pearl's Theme, and Psyche Lock.  These tracks are exactly the same as they were in the first two games.  (Maya's Theme naturally returns, and they reused the PW2 variation, just as they had done with the GBA version.)

Here's a ten minute medley sample I had recorded.  I'm looking forward to ripping/recording the full score:

http://www.megaupload.com/?d=TPN713KK

All in all, I'm having a wonderful time with the game, and it'll likely remain to be one of my better gaming experiences this year.  Although the fourth one is on the way, it's sad that this is the last of the "Phoenix" titles, and that this will be the last time we'll get to visit the ol' Wright Office, looking out the window at the ever-popular Gatewater Hotel, checking out what poster is currently hanging on that wall, and seeing how Charley the plant is making out.  I'm gonna cherish this one greatly.

Jay Aug 25, 2007

The translation seems full of lines taken from pop culture references. I thought it was funny at first (loved the 'milkshake' line), but now I'm in the second case, it's having me wonder if it's not just a little lazy. Still, all in all, the lines seem funnier than PW2.

Crystal Aug 25, 2007

I picked this up the first day it came out.
I got an alternate DS paper insert cover with all 4 game logos and characters on it.
Wish I could've gotten something more special than that.

Playing this really makes me want to re-listen to PW music all over again.

As for the references,
I saw some like KattyTom, and Bennifer. Obviously references to famous movie stars....

I'm really enjoying the game. I restrained myself from reading any spoilers about it from other sites. So every character is new to me except for Godot aka "Too much java" man

I'm on the 2nd case right now.

Jay wrote:

Far more than you can imagine.  I understand there's references to Final Fantasy 4 and 8, the movie 300, Ghost in the Shell, Star Wars, and even Scooby Doo.  Clever as many of them are, I wonder how well they're going to age in the coming years?  Will they still be as funny if we were to fire up the game in, say, ten years from now?  o_O

Lucky!  My NCSX import didn't even come with the insert covers; I thought they were going to come standard with the game package, but I guess they were Japanese-exclusive bonus items after all.

Atmey is superbly well-written, and Godot is already worlds better as a prosecutor than the bitch-fest Franny.  The way they manage the recapping of returning characters and past scenarios from the first two games is really well done, too.

Awesome. One thing I didn't like about PWJFA was how much that broad cracked her whip.

Angela Aug 25, 2007

Finished Case 2 today, and I am reminded at how unbelievably *AMAZING* the third game really is.  And it only gets better from here on out.

But Case 2.... it has the epic scope, characterization and engaging twists of the Case Fours from the previous two games.  And then some.

ZVARRI!

Angela Aug 31, 2007

Just finished the final case, and I can now fully confirm what many have said before; this is indeed the best Phoenix Wright title in the series.  Feeling much more like the true successor to the first game, anyone who felt that Justice For All left you a bit limp needn't worry here; Trials And Tribulations is bursting at the seams with strong characters, consistently clever writing, and edgy personality.  Every major character from the trilogy plays key roles here, especially in the final case, and the interaction between one another portrays a surprisingly natural ebb and flow within this game's world.

Like the first game's DL-6 incident, the overarching story is a constant presence throughout, and the trilogy's numerous story threads flow into a dramatic tapestry that will leave you stunned and genuinely satisfied by the time it's all over.  I'd like to "revise my testimony," too, and say that even Phoenix's dialogue strengthens up, and gets better as the game progresses.  The localization in general is fantastic, and I'd actually put it up there with the lofty standards that the first game set.   The only things that need fixing are the scattered typos and grammatical errors that plague the first few cases. (Like JFA, I noticed they more or less taper off by the second half of the game.)

Capcom is now absurdly high on my respect list with this game.  Definitely a strong candidate for GOTY.

Finally, another ten minute sample to cap off my impressions:

I can't help wondering if there would be an age issue for the US version of case four, given the age of the girlfriend involved.

Zane Aug 31, 2007

That's great to hear, Angela. PW3 is the next game that's coming out that I'm really looking forward to, so reading those reassuring comments made the wait that much harder. I'm waiting for the US release, though. I've been listening to the OST to get familiar with the tunes, and so far it's been really good. Anyway. I'm glad I have a solid game to look foward to! PW2 was damn good, but did leave a little to be desired (especially in case 3. Ugh.).

Datschge Aug 31, 2007

Just starting case 3 here. Before that the bonus case 5 from PW1DS was my favourite while PW2 was a disappointment to me due to all the excessive silliness. But PW3's case 2 was exactly the stuff I needed to become a fan again.

Phoenix had the best joke ever in Number 2. "Why am I such a good lawyer? Because I'm WRIGHT all the time!".

Jay Sep 4, 2007

Well I just finished PW3 and I totally agree with Angela - this is the finest PW game in my opinion. Even though it can't ever have the freshness of playing PW for the first time, the cases are fantastic and the characters are wonderful.

What I loved about PW3 is that the cases got really convoluted without me feeling frustrated that I couldn't present some really obvious clue right from the start (like the missing gunshot in PW1). There was really only one part, in the last case, where I had figured something out way before the characters did and had me itching to get to it. Just about everything else unfolded at just the right pace.

Fantastic game. Shame there'll probably be such a long wait for 4 now.

Zane wrote:

The hatred for JFA's Case 3 surprises me a bit.  I always view the Case Threes of every game to be quite entertaining, as they always have the most colorful cast of characters.  The third game's Case 3 is no exception, and it had me laughing out loud on a great number of occasion.

That being said, however, I would rate PW2's Case Three last, after PW3's and PW1's.

Jay wrote:

That might be a sensitive issue, but I doubt they'd change it.  That would require an entire restructuring of the story's timeline.

"Ha!...... Teen angels these days....."   ;p

The number of spikey-hair jokes in this game is both plentiful and hilarious. ^_^  Phoenix really returns to form for this outing.

I can't get to get this game. Of course, I still have to finish the first one (just started case 5) and even start the second. There's something oddly infectious about the characters... Oldbag is my favorite. tongue

She'd be ecstatic to hear a whippersnapper like you say that.  >=)

Welcome to the series, by the way.  Despite the negative vibe you might be getting from this thread about the second game, do make sure you play it before heading into the third; crucial story elements and characters are introduced in Justice For All that leads into a final resolution in Trials And Tribulations.
