Maybe. Will Sony offer an incentive to current PS4 owners to upgrade? Also Nintendo released the DS, then DSXL, then 3DS, then 3DSXL and now the "New 3DS". I don't remember hearing too many grumbles. While cheaper than a PS4, the DS systems are still $200 so about half the price of a PS4 (or even more). Thoughts?

I haven't bought a PS4 yet, but if I had, I'd be annoyed.  At least I don't think they're stupid enough that they would release PS4 games that are completely unusable on the older PS4 model, that would be a platform breaker.

Uhhgh....4k TV upgrades

I don't really see the problem and I don't know why consumers would get angry.  Everything I've read about PS4.5 says it will be entirely backwards compatible -- same hardware, same games, same peripherals, same dev kit, same everything.  Just better.  They also said the games made after October 2016 have to be made for *BOTH* consoles and that developers are *NOT* allowed to add in "4.5 exclusive" content, promos, premiums or anything other than 60fps/4k support/VR support.  The only reason you should have to upgrade is if you want the improvements the system offers, which you don't need unless you want to use 4K or you want to use VR. 

I don't see why anyone would get angry at that, it sounds like they're doing everything they can to not alienate original PS4 owners and let's be honest -- if you want to play VR or 4K games you were going to have to upgrade anyway...?

I thought they weren't, which is why people had to buy all that extra junk for Oculus? idk though because I'm not interested in VR, which makes this even less a concern for me

The 3ds isn't an upgraded DS any more than the PS4 is an upgraded PS3.

That's probably fair, for the most part. The 3D is new technology. Although you remind me that I forgot to mention Nintendo's 2DS console. Nothing says "innovative" like playing 3D games in 2D, especially since the 3DS already has the option of playing in 2D. Now, if Nintendo really wants to be innovative, maybe they should release a 1DS.

I think Sony's only statement on an upgrade incentive so far has been "we currently have no plans" so I'm not holding my breath. If they DID offer an incentive like that, I'd probably make use of it, provided the deal was good enough. I'm not buying a new, slightly stronger PS4 for $400, but I'd consider trading in my old one and paying maybe $200 or something.

As TerraEpon already said, the 3DS is a completely new system, so that's not the same as an incremental upgrade to an existing system. Nobody's complaining about actually new consoles being released, because that's how it's been since forever. The problem is making small upgrades to existing hardware, which is a relatively new phenomenon for home consoles, and I don't think like the trend.
If they're going to make sure that every game works PROPERLY on every PS4, then I won't complain.

The New 3DS actually has exclusive games that won't work on regular 3DS machines, which is a pretty shitty thing to do, but fortunately (?) it's only a handful of games.
But if you get stuff like Hyrule Warriors Legends, which apparently runs like absolute ass on regular 3DS, then things start becoming problematic. Also, it's a pain in the ass for devs to have to create two separate PS4 versions from now on, and if it's only optional, I can see a lot of them just not bothering at all.

Anyway, I'm not interested in VR, and I'm not gonna buy a 4K TV either, so I'm probably gonna skip on PS4.5.

All I can say, I'm just glad that I haven't gotten a PS4 yet; there's not any games I want on it, anyway.

That, and let all the Early Adopters iron out the bugs for the rest of us, too.

I probably won't be getting another console system; I think I'll be sticking to PC.

I have PS3 games that are as of yet still unfinished, but honestly, I've been glued to indie games on PC lately.
