In reaction to a post in the 'what age to stop playing videogames' thread, or whatever, that caught my eye, I wonder the aforementioned subject.

I don't watch television, at all.  And it's not because it's all in German.  Not even when I was in the states, or in Guam.  I don't think I have watched television for 7 or 8 years now; it's just not stimulating.

Every now and then I will watch a DVD, but that is usually with friends/family.  And that is rarely.

The only exception I make is, when I am running on my treadmill, I will throw in an episode of ZIM!, Simpsons, Family Guy, or the like, to use up the time and get a good laugh.

Well.....that's it.

I don't watch domestic TV at all, but thanks to the wonder of the internet (read: Bittorrent) I do get my doses of the shows I really enjoy without having to faff about waiting for a UK channel to pick them up (if ever), or a DVD release.

Basically all I'm watching at the moment is Lost and a bunch of Japanese TV dramas and Anime. I haven't dedicated myself to a TV show since Buffy ended.

I suppose I do watch TV in the sense that I watch DVDs of favourite shows (I couldn't live without my Simpsons, Futurama and Buffy). But yeah, 99% of everything that's out there at the moment isn't worth the effort it takes to turn the TV on.

I watch TV and I like it.  The episodic format allows you to really get to know the characters and watch them grow over time.  That said, I have cut back on the amount of TV I watch, mostly because I want to be able to both play games more and go out more.  I have been adding less and less shows each year, so I hope that in a few years I can wean myself down even further.  Right now, I watch the following first-run shows regularly:

The Simpsons (FOX - S17)
Family Guy (FOX - S4)
American Dad (FOX - S2)
Desperate Housewives (ABC - S2)
24 (FOX - S5)
Scrubs (NBC - S5)
Bernie Mac (FOX - S5)

I will also kick back and watch some of my old favorites on DVD when I don't feel like doing anything.

I watch these shows religiously:

Alias
Drawn Together
House, M.D.
Monk
South Park
The Dead Zone
The O.C.

Three of those are in season right now, so that's what I watch.  If I ever feel like watching a movie, I have plenty of DVDs.

POPOBOT5000 Apr 7, 2006

I watch TV, but usually it's just background noise. I'm almost always doing something else while the TV is on. I don't really follow anything current, except for South Park and the Daily Show/Colbert Report hour, but since Comedy Central tends to air the latter two shows four or five times a day, I'm not necessarily camped out in front of the TV for its debut airing. Outside of that, it's just reruns of the Law & Order spinoffs and Seinfeld.

It's baseball season, so I'm definitely watching a lot of TV now. Big reason I consider baseball the best sport: There's so much of it during the season (as compared to football, where you're lucky if your favorite team plays 5 close games all year). I also watched the hell out of the winter olympics when they were on, mostly for the diversity in stuff that so rarely gets shown (w00t! Curling!)

Let's see...Wrestling seems to have gotten better recently, so I always tune in Monday, Friday and Saturday (TNA) nights. Still wouldn't waste money on a PPV though.

Not much else I watch: Cable TV is going to hell by the minute. A couple shows I watch reruns of: Futurama, Simpsons, Fresh Prince of Bel Air and sometimes Family Guy (I haven't been impressed at all by the majority of new episodes) and South Park (ditto, aside from the PSP and Wall Mart ones). The videogame-related shows on Spike TV (they follow TNA wrestling) are amusing enough to keep me watching.

Not much interesting anime is making the rounds either. Cartoon Network is gradually phasing it out, for more domestic stylings (or in the case of Miguzi replacing Toonami, shooting most of it dead in its' tracks). Adult Swim's line-up is an ever-changing joke (good luck trying to decipher their weeknight schedules) and seeing shows like Boondocks (which is more offensive for being non-funny in using racism than for actually using it) get prominent TV time strikes me as a waste of any momentum they've built up. It's just a shame that a lot of my favorites came from watching that network: Kenshin, Tenchi Universe, Sailor Moon, DBZ (well, a good chunk of it anyway), Yu Yu Hakusho, Outlaw Star, Cowboy Bebop, Conan/Case Closed, some of the Gundam series' they've shown...Only things noteworthy anymore are Naruto, Samurai Champloo (which I'm pretty lukewarm on) and Full Metal Alchemist (ditto). Oh well...Gotta make room for all that low-budget domestic junk.

LuxKiller65 Apr 7, 2006

I watch it just early in the morning (news) and then before dinner half an hour when there's something interesting. Less than 40 minutes a day in general, sometimes more, almost always less.

It's really mainly for the news and other information, not films and shows.

Qui-Gon Joe Apr 7, 2006

I can't remember the last time my TV was on.  And like with JasonMalice and the German thing, it's not because the shows here are in Japanese.  Frankly, Japanese TV in general just tends to be much, much worse than American TV.  And I never liked American TV all that much.  I can only watch Mito Komon have the same plot that's been in every single episode of the show since 30 years ago so many times (the man retired in my town, though... we can visit his house and garden).  I am totally unable to dedicate myself to long-running TV shows, either... otherwise I might watch some anime (though most of the stuff when I'm not sleeping is pretty much crap, anyway - for example, F-Zero... imagine a whole show of the character interaction from F-Zero GX).  In any case, I get my world news from online sources (usually BBC to avoid any kind of American slant to my news) and the TV is used for games and movies, primarily.  Generally with more responsibilities as an adult, my free time has shifted from TV *and* video games to just video games.

I do have fond memories of watching shows I really liked, though, such as Star Trek DS9 and Quantum Leap.

Timt99 Apr 7, 2006

I'm like JasonMalice and Qui-Gon, I hardly watch television. I don't stay up-to-date on a single tv series, not do I watch any of the shows even occasionally. I may watch G4Tech for a tech update or ESPN for a good sports update or ball game. I actually enjoy Andy Griffith on TV Land, but I've seen nearly all the episodes. In my opinion, there's not many quality tv shows out these days. =/ Instead, most of my time that could be expended on tv is substituted for the Internet in trying to keep up with news.

Princess-Isabela Apr 8, 2006

I do watch tv very rarely, but I am totally recommending one show:

LOST

I hardly ever watch television, but I do watch X-Files and Seinfeld on DVD very often. The last time I watched TV was back in the spring when HBO On Demand had all of the Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes on. That was probably the best weekend ever.

Ryu Apr 8, 2006

Only things I watch regularly are Family Guy, American Dad, The Daily Show, Colbert Report, and Smallville.  I do find myself watching Jeopardy a lot, but no real devotion.

Angela Apr 8, 2006

Might catch a rerun of Seinfeld or Simpsons in the evenings sometimes.  Maybe American Idol from time to time.  The audition shows only, though - those are the entertaining bits, after all. ;)

I'm still keeping up on my trio of Seinfeld, Frasier, and Simpsons DVD collecting though.  I watch out for every season release like a hawk.

Ryu Apr 8, 2006

Angela, do you intend on getting every Simpsons season?

Of course!  Granted, the quality of the shows began to drop, say, around season 11, but I've come this far already.  But who's to say the DVD format won't become obsolete by the time they get around to the final season?  I mean, the show itself is still in syndication, isn't it?

In any case, there were/are some seasons I'm looking forward to more than others.  For Simpsons, it's the upcoming Season 8, as it contains my most favorite episode of all time, "Mountain of Madness."  I'd just gotten my favorite Frasier at Season 6, "Three Valentines."  And Seinfeld was "The Race" on Season 6.

JasonMalice Apr 8, 2006

I can't stand the early Simpsons seasons..... They started getting progressively better at season 4...

You think so?  I admire the older shows because they're a solid basis of what's to come, as far as characters and their stories.  I've been impressed at how well they've fleshed them out, making constant (and accurate) references to even the earlier episodes.

One thing I can say for certain, though, is that I've enjoyed the older Treehouse of Horror Halloween Specials more than the newer ones.  They're more satirically original, and a little less...... grotesque.  (Yeah, there were some pretty gross episodes.  The one with Frink's father, for instance, icked me out.  *_*)

Just curious because the next release is the last for me.  Though JasonMalice has a point, especially with the first two seasons, I've still got them.  I could've sworn they said that they will end the series before a theatrical movie, but the teaser before Ice Age 2 (right?) says otherwise.

I'm getting the Seinfeld series too; another show with a weak start, but at least it went out before becoming an embarassment.

I got rid of my TV three and a half years ago, and since then, I've noticed a significant rise in my level of mental health. I'm not saying that everything on TV is necissarily crap (actually, Twin Peaks is the best thing I've ever seen on a screen), but, overall, I think TV can be really damaging to one's sanity and/or intelligence. 99% of what's on (whereever in the world you are) is just mindnumbing crap. I don't know what aspect of it that irritates me more: the fact that so much money and resources are spent on producing shitty TV programmes, or that most people seem to like the crap. Oh, wait. The latter irritates me more.

Anyway, I better stop here. Just thinking about this subject annoys me. BTW, nice to see you still around, Jason.

Originally, the plan was for the movies (three are planned) to follow the end of the TV run, but since the TV run doesn't show any signs of stopping (just renewed through Season 19 taking the show through May 2008), I suppose they didn't want to wait.

Kenology Apr 10, 2006

I stopped watching televison toward the end of last year...  I'd say around September.

TV:  (tee-vee) n.  T.V. is pretty much evil.  Your life will be better off without the corporate sponsored entertainment, disinformation, and whatever other trite material endlessly paraded for your social conditioning.

Schala Apr 11, 2006

TV? Isn't that, like, the thing you attach your game console to so the graphics will show up? ^_~

Okay, seriously. I rarely watch TV nowadays, not that I've ever watched that much TV in my life. Most of what I do see now are news broadcasts, David Letterman, and the late show by the British guy whose name I can never remember despite the fact that I love his accent and he's pretty darn funny. And these are only because someone ELSE tuned the TV to them and I'm just in the vicinity. But I'm not the type to sit down and actually watch a TV show nowadays -- heck, I don't even do that when I'm bored. Not that I have time to be bored these days....

Jodo Kast Apr 15, 2006

I do, but not on my television. I use my PC and this website - http://mediahopper.com/portal.htm

I primarily watch EBS from South Korea, in order to aid in my learning of the language. I let it run for a few hours every morning and simply...absorb.
