Oh, what the hay... I decided to try this after all. But it sure was hard... Hard, but fun, when you have to try real hard to rank them you feel like you get something out of it. I know that I'll just roll my eyes in disbelief once the final results are announced (because let's face it, most people do have shitty tastes tongue), but here's my list anyway...

1. Silent Hill 2 (PS2, Akira Yamaoka)
2. Silent Hill (PS1, Akira Yamaoka)

25. Castlevania 3 (NES, H. Maezawa / Jun Funahashi / Yukie Morimoto)
26. Gradius Gaiden (PS1, Norikazu Miura)
27. Batman (NES, Naoki Kodaka)
28. No Reality (PC, kt2)
29. Dewprism/Threads of Fate (PS1, Junya Nakano)
30. Eternal Darkness (GC, Steve Henifin)

Yep, that's about it. I really wanted to fit some Pocky and Rocky/Kiki Kaikai in there somewhere, but there just wasn't any space left. It was a really hard fight for some of the positions, especially between Silent Hill 3 & 4, which could've gone any way, really. Interesting to note also that Iridion Perfect Selection was the only arranged album I thought fit enough to be in my Top 30.... Yes, I'm an all-OST guy.

GoldfishX: Once you compile and announce the final result, be sure to tell us how many people in total participated in this. The validity of the survey is stronger the more people that are involved, so I'll be curious to hear about that.

To Daniel K:

What caused you to put the SH2 soundtrack over the SH1 soundtrack?  I've read your reviews before and it seemed like the first one still held the top spot for you.

I regard both SH1 OST and SH2 OST as flawless masterpieces, they're by far my favourite game soundtracks. Choosing between them... Well, that's like choosing between one's kids. I used to always blow SH1's horn a little louder, though, since I really felt it was something special and unique in the field of VGM (to a larger degree than SH2). The rawness and totally unconventional sound of that CD is something I've always had a lot of respect for. SH2 is awesome as well, but since it was easier accessible, more people got into that. I guess my desire to get the SH1 word out was stronger than with SH2.

I choose to put SH2 in the number 1 spot now because it has one thing that SH1 lacks: diversity. Its often a stronger listening-experience since I have to be in a certain mood (and it has to be a certain time of day) to really get into SH1 properly.

I know the feeling.  That's exactly how I feel about FFVI OSV and Vagrant Story OST.

Makes perfect sense.  I remember I pissed off a few people one time when I suggested that SH2 was overrated (both as a game and as a soundtrack) in the sense that it totally overshadows SH1 in the arena of popular opinion when it shouldn't.  There are times when I feel like listenability is almost a negative when I run into people who don't seem to consider anything else, but I have to be careful not to lose perspective.

It's always tricky balancing out respectability and listenability when it comes to the overall assessment of a soundtrack.  That's one of the things that makes ranking your favorite soundtracks so difficult.

Thanks for answering my question.  Also, I notice you have a general fondness for mood-setting scores, which I also have a fondness for, though my list would likely be more a mix of mood-setting and traditionally melodic.  Interesting list.

I need to see if I can post a list soon.  Ranking them is so difficult.

Yes, I definitely plan on doing this. Around the 15th or so, I'll bump this on the other forums and try to up participation a bit. I also need to run it over at overclocked.com (one of the VGM forums I'm not at all familiar with), so if I get a surge of participation, I might extend the deadline a bit.

As for ranking, yeah I know its' difficult. That's (hopefully) why the final results should be interesting to look at, assuming everyone is giving their honest take on it. I ran into a spat with Guilty Gear, just because the soundtracks share similar tracks. GG OGS might not be as high as it deserves because of Heavy Rock Track.

I guess I should start my list...
Personally, I think you would do well to extend the deadline. Having it on July 31 seems rather random. A much better deadline would be Jan 31, 2008.  Anyway, I'm just going to jut down some soundtracks and organize everything later.

Morrowind
Diablo II Lords of Destruction
Castlevania Symphony of the Night
Final Fantasy Tactics
The Dig
Eternal Arcadia
Eternal Darkness
Falcom Neo Classics (Disk I)
Might and Magic VI
Heroes of Might and Magic II
Shining Force III
Symphony Ys

4. Streets of Rage 2
5. Donkey Kong Country 2

I thought about it as well. If I were to do a similar thing, I would've asked everyone to copy and paste the albumIDs from VGMdb.net. Or perhaps something like that. Would've made calculation much simpler, as it could've been automatized much more easily. Just an idea for next time, if anyone would care to initiate a similar project.

Anyway, thanks for your devotion gfx. smile

GoldfishX Jul 20, 2008 (edited Jul 20, 2008)

Thanks for the idea, but it'll just be me, a big fat spreadsheet and probably a marathon of one of these DVD sets on my shelf during a few nights after work. Wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to participate. Looking forward to it, actually...Without school, I haven't had a decent-sized project to just plug away on. I kinda miss it. tongue

The liklihood of it getting an August 31th deadline is pretty high though (partly because I won't have as much time as I anticipated in early August, partly because I want to get participation as high as possible, so keeping things open another month isn't too bad a deal).

Scary thing...I can already guess the #1 just glancing through lists (should be obvious), but 2-everything else is anyone's guess right now. So I'm looking forward to gathering the results.

SonicPanda Jul 21, 2008 (edited Jul 21, 2008)

So, I learned a few things about myself working on this.
First, I'm not really into RPG scores anymore, for the most part; what I presume will be the #1 overall is a soundtrack I've not listened to outside of playing the game in about 6 years.
Secondly, 9 times out of 10 I will kick a work of subtle and evocative beauty to the curb in favor of something with a beat.
And finally, I'm much more of an old-school guy than I'd have guessed going in. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Anyway...

1) Secret of Mana +
2) Silent Hill 3 Original Soundtracks
3) Silent Hill 2 Original Soundtracks
4) Final Fantasy VI Original Sound Version
5) Megaman 2
6) Zwei!! Original Sound Track
7) Symphonic Suite Dragon Quest VI
8) Symphonic Suite Dragon Quest III
9) Dirge of Cerberus -Final Fantasy VII- Original Soundtrack
10) Shenmue Orchestra Version
11) Gensoo Suikoden III Music Collection ~Rustling of the Wind~

Sami Aug 31, 2008 (edited Aug 31, 2008)

Cutting it close, as per my habit, but here's a list.

1. Gensoo Suikoden OGS
2. Neo Contra
As good as Shin Contra's soundtrack is, Neo is just a huge improvement upon it,     especially due to the violence conducted upon Shin's soundtrack release.

3. Shining Force III OST
Which is actually mostly an arrange album, and even after all these years, absolutely     Sakuraba's finest.

4. Panzer Dragoon Saga OST
5. Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 2 OST
6. Vagrant Story OST
7. Bladestorm OST
8. Streets of Rage 2
9. Kinzoku Bat Number 1
Likely Kooji Hayama's best soundtrack, and the one most exemplifying his style, even     better than the Choaniki series which he's best known for.

10. Jumping Flash!
Most of the game's best tracks can be found on the somewhat erroneously labeled     "Jumping Flash! 2 OGS".

11. Final Fantasy VI OSV
12. Final Fantasy IV (SNES)
13. Vandal Hearts II OGS
14. Earthbound (SNES)
15. Contra: Hard Corps
16. Violence Killer (Turok New Generation OST)
17. Turtles in Time (SNES)
18. Journey to Silius
19. Game Music Is Dead ~ The Successive Kings
20. Star Ocean Blue Sphere Arrange Trax (arrange)
21. Streets of Rage 3
22. Gensoo Suikoden II OST
23. Lost Odyssey OST
24. Me and Satan King OST
25. Shin Contra OST
26. Megaman 3 (NES)
27. Simcity (SNES)
28. S.S.T. Band Live! -G.S.M. Sega-
29. Provincialism Ys
30. Megaman X6

Many fine albums and soundtracks were left behind, but I can't help noticing that arrange albums have fallen out of my favor in the past few years. Surely Chrono Trigger: Brink of Time would deserve a spot on that list? Alas, it isn't currently among my favorites, but a year on, it might climb higher again. This list is a product of my current likings, but it does have many profound favorites that have not faltered over the years.

Mihimaru GT Aug 31, 2008

GoldfishX Aug 31, 2008

Note: Extending the deadline until 12:59 September 30th. Please doublecheck your lists and make sure:

1. They're ordered from 1-30 in order of preferance (or however many you have)
2. Volumized soundtracks are counted seperately.

These are the most common issues I've seen with the lists. Non-ordered ones will not be counted towards the total, while ones that have multiple volumes released will be dropped from your list if they aren't adjusted (I'll move everything else up though, to make up for the dead spot).

Thank you for everyone that has participated so far.

Alex Sep 28, 2008

Well, here I am getting my entry in under the wire. I bet I'm forgetting some awesome soundtracks, but I've checked this a bunch already. Like everyone else, I found actually ranking these to be incredibly difficult because of all the apples-to-oranges comparisons. And also like everyone else, I'm confident this list would change at least a little bit if I went over it in a few days -- or maybe even a few hours. As it is, I'm pretty unsatisfied with my list, but no amount of rearrangement seems to help it much. Oh well, such is life.

It's definitely difficult to rank my favorites, and my list is, unfortunately, categorical, mainly because I ranked them as they came to mind. While game music comprises most of my music, I probably don't have as wide a range as a lot of others here, mainly because I primarily listen to the OSTs of the games I play (with some exceptions), and I don't play that many.

And thanks for extending the deadline. I had intended to make a list after I saw the thread, but kept putting it off.

Joe, nah it's okay...I'm not in a position to close things out just now, so I'm just leaving it open indefinitely for right now until I get a few seconds of breathing room (case in point...I still haven't finished mine yet). Besides, the more the merrier.

Sami, yeah, because of how the Suikoden II OST was released (Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, seperate releases), I need it seperated. Same for Grandia I, Valkyrie Profile 2, Star Ocean 3, etc...
