If someone were in the market to buy a Wii, would you recommend buying a brand-new one at Best Buy, or would you try to go with an older, used model instead?

I realize that the price tag is still at $250, so I'm curious if anyone here is hip to any differences in video output quality or any other possible subtle differences between 2006-2008 models and current ones?

Any input is greatly appreciated!

Video quality is the same. The only way to play Wii higher than 480p is to *ahem* use the Wii emulator that outputs in 720p.

As far as acquiring one on the cheap, I'd recommend checking out smaller, non-GS chains. When came time for me to buy another Wii, I went to the local Game Crazy to buy a used one. But once I announced my intent, they went in back and grabbed a new machine and sold it to me for the used price. Obviously your mileage may vary, but it couldn't hurt to see what smaller chains can do for you.

EDIT: As an aside, if you plan on softmodding the system for playing imports or homebrew, definitely look for an older machine. The program for playing imports on works best on firmwares up to 3.2, and on-shelf models start at 3.3 the earliest.

Why did you have to get another one? Did the first one wear out, or did you just want to have two?
