Release Date: 5/31/07 (JP), 6/25/07 (US)
Price: $29.99 (USD)

Features:

* Wii-mote Action! – Moving the Wii-mote allows players to aim weapons, slash with the knife, control action sequences and much more.
* Award-winning gameplay – RE4 has won multiple Game of the Year awards.
* Unsurpassed Visuals – Resident Evil 4 features breathtaking 3D graphics and effects!
* Behind the Camera View – Camera follows you from behind and allows for intuitive movement.
* Advanced AI – Enemies use their cunning abilities to team up and attack the player en mass.
* “Separate Ways” – Play as Ada Wong in five new chapters that reveal startling insight into the original storyline!
* Supports true 16:9 widescreen and Dolby Pro Logic II.

---

Considering I bought up the Gamecube and PS2 versions already, I'd buy this strictly on the following three conditions:

1) PS2-exclusive content available for play.  We're getting "Separate Ways," but let's hope we get the new weaponry and alternative outfits as well.

2) Graphics and processing engine based off of the GC version.  Yes, it was quite the feat getting the game to run as well as it did on PS2, but here's hoping they go along with the version that ran the best.  True 16:9 widescreen should look really nice, too.

3) An option to use the GC controller as an alternative to the Wiimote.  Because let's face it; it's entirely possible the game just won't work well with the 'mote.

Kenology Apr 7, 2007

I'm still torn...  It depends on how well the game controls with the Wiimote.  I'll wait for one of you guys to grab it and give me impressions!  big_smile

I must say if the price is correct I'm glad to see Capcom isn't trying to get a full $40-$50 dollars out of it... still, the fact you can play the GC version on the Wii (minus the mote, which may or may not work as you stated) is a pretty big blow to the overall idea... it definately be more appealing if it wasn't on the GC to begin with.

I personally wouldn't consider the extra features worth another $30, especially if I had experienced them or seen them at a friends house on their PS2 or something. However, since I don't play games as much as I used to I'm probably being pretty biased. I'd pass.

XLord007 Apr 8, 2007

I don't know... I wish they'd program it so it could read my NGC save file... but I know they won't.  I'm not sure I want to run through the whole game a third time just to play Ada's mission.  Still, I might get this after it drops below $20.  I still think RE4 is the best 4th gen game period.

absuplendous Apr 8, 2007

Like Angela, I'd like the game to have GC or classic controller support. I've been thinking about picking up the GC version but since this has been announced, I'm waiting for some confirmation. GC graphics and PS2 extras would make this the definitive edition, so long as it doesn't force players to use a control scheme that, as Angela also said, just might not work.

Gamers just love it when people like me express a desire for traditional controls on Wii games, as if we're hypocrites admitting that "lol innovation" really is an unwelcome gimmick. I like the Wiimote but I don't think it should replace traditional control entirely; it works well in some venues and not so well in others.

As soon as I heard about this I thought, man, I really hope I can load up my GC saves because I do not want to play Mercs again to get that f'n Handcannon. Again. *shudders* That shit was like trying to pull off evil Tony Hawk combos with a shotgun in the middle of a Dead Rising deleted scene.

The temptation to get it again is staggering for me, because RE4 is, on pure adrenaline and overall quality standards, the best game I have played in a very, very long time. It would be a blast to drop Ganados with a Wiimote-aimed Striker blast to the dome. Argh!

Ryu Apr 8, 2007

Seems like everyone is concerned with the Wiimote controls.  Aiming and shooting with the Wiimote sounds great; I don't see why the QTE events would be a problem with it.  Having the extras of the PS2, including 16:9, while having the GC graphics.... it's hard to say no.  I'll definitely give it a shot; the game deserves a seventh play through anyway.

Stephen Apr 8, 2007

Maybe.  I had tried to play the GC version, but it was just too hardcore for me when you had to defend the house from incoming zombies.  That was too much.

Amazingu Apr 8, 2007

I was on the brink of buying the PS2 version, but I'll definitely hold out for this one now.
Does it support some decent progressive scan, I wonder.

They're NOT zombies! wink
Anyway, yeah, that was definitely one of the hardest parts of the game, and therefore one of the coolest.
Mr. Romero would have been proud of that scene.

Wanderer Apr 8, 2007

I never beat the original Cube version but with the Wii-mote, the possibilities are endless. I imagine that it would up the terror level to unbearable levels.

It's one thing to use a controller to fire a gun and another thing to actually have it outstretched and pointed at what you're trying to kill. Not to mention slashing with a knife. Just thinking about it is giving me a preemptive heart attack. neutral

XISMZERO Apr 8, 2007

Nope, I won't buy it. Well not unless it comes with a "slap Ashley" command.

I'm not really a big fan of purchasing games I already own! I realize that "retro" gaming is popular (just look at how well the VC is doing), but this is a bit excessive. So my answer is no smile

cheers,

480p, natch.  That's the best the Wii can do.

I know, but does the PS2 version offer better quailty?

Stephen wrote:

The new Easy/Amateur mode will probably be right up your alley, then.  Although having stronger health and more ammo per mag/box will certainly benefit the novice player, I think it would take a lot of the game's inherent tension away.  I once tried cheat codes - infinite health and unlimited ammo - and it just completely obliterated the whole point of the game.

Zane wrote:

That control setup looks perfectly serviceable, actually.  I'm becoming more and more optimistic with this port.  :)

Classic Controller support has been confirmed too, correct?  I've yet to touch a CC yet; would it work as well as the Gamecube pad?

I was managing fine until I had to "defend the house" from incoming.  I have no idea how to survive that without running out of ammo.  I read gamefaqs and did some of the obvious stuff, but my reflexes and ammo were not up to snuff.

So, has anyone tried the Japanese release yet?  Early impressions seem to be largely positive, with the Wiimote control scheme meeting expectations; landing precision shots is undoubtedly easier, though there's a bit of a learning curve because now your targeting reticule doesn't move along with your camera view; you would need to manually control the camera with the nunchuck's analog.

The game is built off of the Gamecube build and not the PS2's, so that's great news -- and the GC pad (but not the Classic Controller) has been confirmed to work with the game.  (The targeting reticule reverts back to the laser sight when using the GC controller, as well as the original button commands for the QTE events.)  People have also noted that the transitions between gameplay and cutscenes/QTE events flow more quicker and smoother than even the GC version, and that the framerate was tightened up in spots where it might have slowed down in the original.

The main caveat is that, no, you can't load your GC save file.  So yeah, that means having to start from scratch as far as gaining the unlockables again.

EDIT: Check that.  The Classic Controller HAS been confirmed to work with the game as well.

That's balls.  I'll probably skip it until it gets under $20.

If the new control scheme is fun and works right, then I don't see what's wrong having to replay the whole game.  Of course, this is coming from someone who never bothered with the Mercenaries missions, so by "whole game" I mean just the main quest.

Kenology Jun 3, 2007

No GCN save file support is ok with me, as I've only played through the game once on the 'Cube and didn't bother with the Mercenary mode.  I'm actually looking forward to playing the game from the very beginning with the Wiimote - it looks like a lot of fun judging from the gameplay trailers over at IGN.  And with just a $30 price tag - I'm pretty much sold.

I played through the game twice in a row and put over 60 hours into the main mode.  I loved it, but I'd like to be able to play Ada's quest without having to play all the way through Leon's again.

Well, you could always download a Wii save with a completed file.  They should become available soon enough after release.

I suppose.  I'd have to buy a USB to SD card thingamajig for my comp, but that's certainly a reasonable solution.

I think the PS2 can only output in 280i/p. That's what I'd heard, anyway.

But yes, I will probably invest in this, as what I've seen my brother-in-law play of the GC version looks gold, and this ought to have the PS2 extras included, yes?

It's the PS2 game running on the GC engine from what I've been told, with slightly improved frame rate over the cube version. I have yet to get my grubby hands on it, because it's TOTALLY SOLD OUT over here.
Wacky Japanese.

It's to my recent understanding that although the game is running off the GC build for all of the gameplay and QTE sequences, the only part that got lifted from the PS2 version are the pre-recorded cutscenes for the Separate Ways portion of the game.  So that mean that those scenes, just like the PS2 version, won't cut as seamlessly as the regular realtime sequences do, and they will retain that slight FMV-recorded grainy look.  No biggie, and I suppose that's to be as well as to be expected.

Kirin Lemon Jun 7, 2007

I just noticed that DeepDiscount.com has the Wii version up for preorder for slightly over $15.  For that price, I'll double-dip!

Ryu Jun 7, 2007

^  Do note that it says that the format is "paperback"; sounds like the strategy guide and not the game.

I thought I read they are in real time in the Wii version...?

Ryu Jun 7, 2007

Capcom sent me an email saying it is available now; their just-as-useless website doesn't really say otherwise, but I doubt it.  It does have a price of $29.99, which seems fair enough to me for such a great game (even if this makes the third, and hopefully final, time I buy it... at least for a few years).

Speaking of their worthless website, has anyone checked out this Dante figure that is supposed to be so revolutionary?  http://shop.capcom.com/servlet/Controll … =52270100#  It sounds rather cool.

It's revolutionary for Western action figures, because there are many articulation points on the figure, which allows one to pose the figure in many ways.

rosenqueen.com has a similar poseable figure for sale (not the same manufacturer).
