I seem to remember reading about the Walk of Game some time ago....last year I guess, since this apparently debuted in 2005. I must've just glossed over it, heh.

Six Videogame Icons To be Honored with Stars on Walk of Game
Thursday, March 16 at 6pm

San Francisco's Landmark Destination for Gamers to Honor Sid Meier, John Carmack, Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), EverQuest®, FINAL FANTASY® and StarCraft®

2005 Walk of Game Lifetime Achiever Nolan Bushnell to Headline

SAN FRANCISCO, February 28, 2006 - On Thursday, March 16, six new stars will be unveiled on Walk of Game, the landmark destination honoring icons of the videogame industry. This year, Walk of Game celebrates Sid Meier (creator of Civilization®, Railroad Tycoon® and Pirates®) and John Carmack  (Technical Director, id Software - developers of DOOM® and QUAKE®) for Lifetime Achievement, and Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), StarCraft®, FINAL FANTASY® and EverQuest® as favorite Games/Characters. Each will receive a permanent star on Walk of Game, located inside San Francisco's Metreon, a mecca for the gaming community in downtown San Francisco.

The 2006 inductees will be honored at a press and industry-only reception at Metreon on March 16, where the stars will be unveiled. Nolan Bushnell (co-founder of Atari and creator of Pong), 2005 inductee for Lifetime Achievement, will headline the event. The newest additions to the attraction will then be open to the public on Friday, March 17, in time for the Game Developers Conference (GDC), an annual gathering of the global game development community, and a Walk of Game partner for the second year.

"Over the last two years, the public has made Walk of Game a cornerstone of gaming history, with over half a million gamers worldwide casting their vote this year," said Stacy Piket, Manager, Brand Marketing & Promotions for Metreon. "The landmark continues to grow, allowing gamers to voice their opinions, and honor the legends and pioneers in the gaming and game development community."

In 2005, Walk of Game's inaugural inductees included Halo®, Link (The Legend of Zelda®), Mario® and Sonic the Hedgehog®. Shigeru Miyamoto (creator of Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong®) and Nolan Bushnell became the first recipients of the Lifetime Achievement Award.

"Walk of Game is a powerful validation of the contribution that games provide to world culture," said Jamil Moledina, director of the Game Developers Conference.  "One of the core goals of the GDC is to honor the developers who make games the art form that they have become, and we support Walk of Game as it provides a lasting tribute to the people who create the amazing games we play."

New to Metreon's attraction in 2006, gaming fans can come experience why these games are the voters' choice at the Walk of Game Station - 12 unique stations featuring inducted games.

Every October, gamers worldwide cast their votes through paper ballots and online submissions at www.WalkOfGame.com during a one-month voting period. The top four Games/Characters and the top two Lifetime Achievers are then honored with a permanent 24"x24", customized steel star on Walk of Game. Nominations for 2007 will be announced later this year.

Sid Meier and John Carmack are significiant contributors to computer gaming.  I don't think they are poor choices.

Instead of Everquest, they should have tried Ultima Online.  That was the first mainstream MMORPG.

QFT.  Someone needs to get off their Xbox and play PC games.

Well, Sid Meier's a classic, but Carmack is crap, at least from a gameplay standpoint.  I have nothing against his programming abilities.

Hey now. Don't go around saying I play XBox. That's just mean. Didn't you notice I left Halo on the outside of my 'great inductees' comment?

To answer the question at hand, though, Sid Meier and John Carmack embody fully two-thirds of what I hate about PC gaming, simulations and first-person shooters. The other third is handily covered by EverQuest, representing the MMORPG. Going into fogey mode for a moment, and thumping my cane for a moment, I can't help but remember a time when adventure games ruled the computer screens, and PC gaming's edge came from brainplay with a sense of humor. Somewhere along the way, and amid buggy patch hungry releases, forced hardware upgrades, and monthly play charges, PC gaming (for the most part) lost its soul and became completely beholden to the heady rush of being the most technologically advanced and realistic gaming avenue, instead of the most imaginative and fun.

This is just my opinion, of course, but I feel it very strongly. But people, quite a few people it would seem, feel differently, and will see these as great inductees. C'est la vie.

On the other hand though, who really gives a crap about Lara Croft, anyway? Pacman, Metroid, Street Fighter, Pitfall...all of those posessed more historically important characters, who didn't deserve to be superceded by a character better known for getting horny teenagers hot and bothered than anything of worth.

P.S. Can't really comment on StarCraft, as I never tried it.

Amen.
That's EXACTLY how I think about it too, so you're not alone wink

On the other hand, I really enjoyed the first two Tomb Raider games, regardless of breast measurements. They're really not bad at all.
