I know it's old news that Solid Snake is going to appear in the upcoming Smash Bros game, but Gametrailers has a bunch of clips up where Snake uses his Codec to find out more about his adversaries.

Friggin Hilarious!

In case some people may not be aware of it, the clips can also be found on the Smash Bros. Dojo site itself (generally a fun read every weekday, even if it sometimes reaches the absurdity of the Mojo site).

Ashley Winchester Oct 4, 2007

The whole idea of Solid Snake appearing in Smash Bros is odd to me. Yes, the series originated on the NES, I get that, but not growing up with the series until the PS1 installment I see SS and MG more as a character/series catering to the Playstation if anything. The whole MGS4 PS3 exclusive thing just adds to the whole "oddness" of it. SS seems a little too "real" a character (look wise) to fit in with Pokemon and the like.

Anyway, sorry for rambling... I guess the more the merrier, eh?

XLord007 Oct 5, 2007

Wow.  Very cool.

raynebc Oct 5, 2007

My friend is still praying that Sonic will sneak into a Smash Brothers game.

Jay Oct 5, 2007

Sonic doesn't deserve to make it in. If the gaming world were a city, Sonic would be sleeping on the streets hugging an empty bottle of whiskey.

Oh, how original.  Let's all make fun of Sonic.  F*** off.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't this same type exchange occurr in another Mario/Sonic topic a while back... feels like deja vu.

Amazingu Oct 6, 2007

I'd love to see Sonic in there as well, and wouldn't be surprised at all if they're holding back the final word for now.

I agree with Jay's wonderful analogy, but I do think Sonic should be in the game (personally, I think both Sonic and NiGHTS will be in the game... I bet that list of music arrangers holds some secrets).  I also think Viewtiful Joe and Mega Man should be there, but I have no idea if Nintendo's talked to Capcom for this project or not.

Amazingu Oct 7, 2007

Having Mega Man in there would kick ass as well, but I don't consider that very likely.

Still, it wouldn't be the Blue Bomber's first cross-over fighting game outing...

Jay Oct 10, 2007

I hope his stages have ground you can walk on without falling through. That would rock.

Do you mean ground you can walk upside down on  without falling, like the loops in Sonic games? 'Cause I would think walking without falling through is a pretty basic feature of ground. But I haven't played any Sonic games so maybe you're referring to a gameplay element I'm not familiar with.

I'm not at all surprised that he's in the game, but it's nice to finally get it out in the open and cease the endless debates (and start new ones). Hopefully he'll have a 'classic Sonic' alternate 'outfit.' Now, if classic Megaman was revealed, that would be a surprise and a delight...

I'm not sure I'd call it a design feature, but it's definitely a characteristic of the *quality* programming in recent Sonic games!

Stephen Oct 10, 2007 (edited Oct 10, 2007)

I've noticed that all the recent Sonic games that were considered "good" were actually not done by Sega/Sonic Team.  So, if Nintendo's developer is handling this, then Sonic will probably be awesome.

Smash Bros. Brawl is turning into a Jump Superstars type of game.  Very interesting cross-licensing deals going on.

You fellas played Rush Adventure yet?  If not, you should.

Yeah, Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure are good 2D Sonic games.  Neither were developed by Sega/Sonic Team.  I think I see a pattern here...don't buy Sonic games made by Sega/Sonic Team directly.

shdwrlm3 Oct 10, 2007 (edited Oct 10, 2007)

Okay, Sonic is cool and all, but I'm far more excited about the awesome new arrangement of Ashley's Theme. I can only hope "Kochira * Mona Pizza" is also in the works.

I also think Viewtiful Joe and Mega Man should be there, but I have no idea if Nintendo's talked to Capcom for this project or not.

I'd also love to see some Namco characters. Pac-Man or the missus would be great.

Any remaining Nintendo characters that people want to see? The only ones left I can think of are Advance Wars characters.

Oh hell yeah, I'd love to play as Olaf or Sturm!

For non-Nintendo characters I'd like to see Bomberman and Klonoa make the cut.

Not yet. I really, really didn't like Rush in spite of good reports. I've been burned so many times by Sonic games in recent years, well, let's just say the trust in this relationship has gone. So I'm reluctant to go for Rush Adventure.

I'd love to see Mike from Startropics since I believe Nintendo developed and published it.  He'd even come with his own yo-yo!!  The protagonist from Kung-Fu would be welcomed as well.

Jay Oct 11, 2007

I'd like to see Tingle make it into the line-up.

Ashley Winchester Oct 11, 2007

I know the franchise has been dead since the N64 but what about a character from Killer Instinct such as Jago, B. Orchid or Fulgore?

absuplendous Oct 11, 2007

I think Rare retains the rights to Killer Instinct properties.

How about Jill from Drill Dozer? Vaati from The Minish Cap/Four Swords Adventures could help bump up the Zelda roster.

Wart could be a blast from the past. And if they want to do the alternate costume thing, they could have one of the Mario Bros. have a Doki Doki Panic persona outfit.

Ack, nevermind... don't know what I was thinking. I was thinking Rare's titles where still more or less exclusive to Nintendo systems but then I started thinking about Perfect Dark Zero and Conker.

Zane Oct 11, 2007

Smash Bros. is turning into official M.U.G.E.N.

What's next? Ecco the Dolphin fighting a 16-bit sprite of Terra in the Phoenix Wright courtroom with Super Metroid BGM?

Amazingu Oct 12, 2007 (edited Oct 12, 2007)

On the subject of Rare, didn't Smash Bros Melee use some items from Perfect Dark, like the proximity mine?
So who does PD belong to then!?

Also, I'm kinda expecting Midna too.

I am pretty sure PD belongs to Rare, since Perfect Dark Zero was published on the Xbox 360.

If you unlocked the trophy for the Proximity Mine in Melee, it'll tell you the game it was from.  It may or may not be PD.  Also, I'm not sure Nintendo had sold Rare at that point.

If I remember correctly, only the Japanese version of the text refers to the proxy mine as being from Perfect Dark.  The English text had any mention of a specific game removed, which now one might look back at as one of the first indications something weird was going on between Rare and Nintendo.  That was well before anything was officially announced, though, and about 9 months before Starfox Adventures came out.

Rare still retains the rights to the franchises it created for Nintendo, but obviously they gave up anything they did for the Donkey Kong universe.

Amazingu Oct 12, 2007

That would make sense, since I played the Japanese SSBM, and I definitely remember it saying Perfect Dark.
Thanks for clearing that up!

The Elite Beat Agents deserve to be in there.

As fr Non-Nintendo characters, how about Alex and Ryan from River City Ransom? Anyone else miss that game as much as I do? Or the goddamn Battletoads?

Jay Oct 14, 2007

Well seeing as there has been Streetfighter versus just about everyone, there really should be a SF character in there.

Zorbfish Oct 28, 2007 (edited Oct 28, 2007)

King Dedede was announced Thursday. My brother just preordered the game. I can't wait.

Ephidel Nov 10, 2007
