Looks like it might be a winner... but $130 for the "Legendary Edition" is absurd! You could of course just by the regular or limited edition, but the cool DVD with remastered cinematics from Halo and Halo 2 is only found in the rip-off edition...

cheers,

Is the legendary edition the one with the ridiculous helmet thing?  Anyone who buys that is just ... dumb. ;/

Amazingu Sep 23, 2007

I hate Halo, so no.
Probably getting the soundtrack though, cos the last one was really good.

brandonk Sep 24, 2007

I never really liked Halo (had the first one, but didn't finish it).  It was ok I thought, but seemed too slow for me.   It sure did sell well though.   I'll check out it out when my neighbor gets it, but I can't imagine it being the straw that breaks the back of my 'no real need to buy a 360 for any games to date', mantra.  The FPS's for me, lately have been for Multiplayr.  Resistance for PS3 is really good at this.  Alot of care was put into the gameplay.   The single / double player 'story' is pretty bland  however, when compared to Gears of War.

Anyway, yeah, Halo 3, maybe someday, when I can play it on the PC.   (blah blah blah...;-)

Don't have an X360 myself but even if I did, I could care less about Halo. I felt the fever - for a weekend or two. Actually, I'd get Perfect Dark Zero since it's really the only game I want the console for. I don't know, I don't have the time nor care to sink endless hours into a virtual world these days especially since most of its appeal is online. Maybe I'm just playing less violent games or games in general lately.

On another note, I heard Wal-Mart will be opening at 12AM and will provide dedicated checkout lines just for the game. That's a fine idea. What irks me is that Halo 2 was reported as the fastest selling game - what they discount is that most to all retailers open at the dead of morning to release it when most games, as we know, don't arrive at the shops on release day until at least noon!

Anyway, all the energy drink soda fiends will be at their TVs from noon til' night playing the game, probably putting their real lives on hold. Might be a prime time to find a job though, there could be many openings in the next few days...

Limited Edition, here. I'm one of the few who don't play multi-player. I stopped caring about the story in the single-player game after the first Halo. Cortana's constant yapping in the second one got on my nerves. The series' best quality, in my opinion, is its excellent vehicular combat in wide-open areas. With several new vehicles being introduced in this installment, it looks like I won't be disappointed.

XLord007 Sep 24, 2007

I respect the Halo series, but I it just doesn't do anything for me.

Schala Sep 24, 2007

Yep, Limited Edition. Gonna try to head over to Gamestop after I finish work tonight. I was going nuts over the fact that there's supposed to be 4-player co-op. Now we're gonna have to reshuffle our thinking so we don't keep shooting at each other, heh.

Jay Sep 26, 2007

I just picked it up this morning. Just caught up in the hype, I guess. Never finished 1. Never played 2. I hope I like this one. I'm going to make an effort to get into the multiplayer end this time around as I have a Live subscription gathering dust.

Ditto...The analyst in me is much interested in the hype (and sales) a mere FPS seems to generate than actually playing the game. One of these days, I might pick up Halo 1 or 2 on the cheap to see if they can make me overlook my distaste for the genre.

Wanderer Sep 26, 2007

There isn't anything Halo does that the PC FPS genre hasn't done already (and better).

Exactly, and I personally would add Console FPS's to that as well.

Sure there must be some Halo fan here to jump to their defense and tell us how revolutionary it was?

No?

Bububu it's the Star Wars of our generation!

I agree with everything that has been said in this thread.  Bioshock shits all over this game and I'm sure CoD 4 will as well.

Wow, and I heard Bioshock wasn't all THAT either....Awaiting CoD 4, hopefully they won't butcher the PS3 version, like they did with CoD3

It's so far the best game I've played this year although the ending(s) are somewhat unsatisfying, and the last part of the game is just a massive fetch quest.

Jay Sep 27, 2007

Well so far, so Halo. Halo 3, for better or worse, is exactly like my memory of Halo 1. The frame rate is well dodgy but it looks nice enough. Not Gears of War standard by a long shot, but it does the job.

PerfectZer0 Sep 27, 2007 (edited Sep 27, 2007)

What makes Halo 3 amazing for me is the large battles that take place and theres a lot of shit going on at once.  Technically the game is awesome, lots of baddies, vehicles, marines, and huge scarabs to take down.

Like for instance in one of the levels where 5 Mongooses with marines as a driver on each of them and on the back is a Marine wielding a rocket launcher.  Theres one with no driver but a passanger Marine on the back and he's all yellin "Come on Chief lets rock!".  I'm thinking to myself "Hell yeah!".  I know something big is about to happen.  So I hop on it and haul ass out of the building with the other 4 Mongooses.  Once outside I notice lots of things to jump my Mongoose with (which is always fun) then the rest of the area is large and open with a cliff to the right side.  In the sky a battle is taking place and straight ahead is a huge Covenant Anti Aricraft Cannon going off.  Then a massive Scarab walks over the top of the structure in font of me.  Lots of gun fire from the covenant Scarab and all the Marines on the back of the other Mongooses including mine start going off.  The Marines are all screaming "Take out it's legs!"  Take'em out!".  Every Marine then starts aiming for it's legs.  Once we imobilized it's legs for a short while the big bastard came down low enough to were when I jumped off the Mongoose and I boarded the rear of it. Then porceded to take out it's gunner and then I ripped the whole thing off it's gun mount to reak havok on the rest of aliens on board.  After all of that I found the Scarabs core and destroyed it. The alarms on the thing are going off everywhere, so I jumped off it and luckly enough my Mongoose was still there, but the Marine didn't survive.  I got away from as fast as I could, then the beast exploded into pieces.....NIIIICE! Theres a lot of exciting moments in Halo 3 that I will never forget and won't have to because of the replay theater.

It's things like this that make Halo 3 very special.  In the theater you watch your whole mission and every level that you've played through.  Every battle every gun shot, every single second that you played, you can watch.  You can detach the carmea and fly around anywhere on the map.  You can put it in slow motion and watch awesome explosions and some pretty badass kills you've done.  The attention to detal in Halo 3 towards it's graphics is AMAZING.  The replay theater really shows that off because you can zoom in and out of everything in the missions.  You can take screenshots of anything and everything, you can take the camera up in the sky and watch battles take place or go right into the thick of the action.  Cool addition to the game.

I havent even touch multi-player yet even or The Forge.  This game is probably one of the best and complete games ever.  Personally it's my favorite FPS ever right now.

Sorry if it's a big wall of text but I was excited when I wrote it, theres just too much cool shit going on in the game for me to describe in every detail.  All you need to know is that Halo 3 rocks....period.

allyourbaseare Sep 29, 2007

Well, just don't go all fan-boy on us and you'll be okay.  smile

Nick G Sep 29, 2007

There are a lot of cool vehicle battles but the FPS gameplay hasn't aged well. I found myself removing turrets whenever I found one to switch to the third person view. It didn't help much but it looked cool. Halo 3 is basically Halo 2 with next-gen graphics.

For the scarab tank, I took a ghost up one of the crane elevators and boosted onto it! I did the same thing in Halo 2.

Jay Sep 30, 2007

The Theatre mode in Halo 3 is excellent. You can get some really cool shots taken from your online games and I seem to spend as much time watching games as plaing them.

Jay Oct 2, 2007

Well who would have thought it? I'm becoming a Halo fan. I'm getting into this in a way I never did the first one. Yes, some of the mechanics are definitely archaic (trying to launch yourself up a ladder is a real chore) and, in spite of what fans seem to say about the AI, both the enemies and allies can be downright stupid sometimes, but the battle setups in this are just excellent.

It's one really huge set piece after another and even the odd indoor section (which I found to be atrocious in the first) are cleverly set out in terms of battles. There are many different ways you can make your way through areas and they all require real strategy coupled with quick reactions. Many sections require patience and a lot of thought - that could be seen as a negative as it doesn't have the frantic war feel of Gears for example, but the game really feels rewarding when you survive a battle because usually you have to be so controlled about it and often inventive.

Only played a few online games and they were fun too but have been mostly on the single player. I'm really enjoying this.

Msia Oct 2, 2007

The matchmaking in this game is ass.  Nothing has changed from Halo 2.  I want to play CTF and team slayer, not f---ing territories and shotty snipers.

Idolores Oct 2, 2007

Picked it up yesterday. In my opinion, the series has retained its' generally slightly above average gameplay for part 3. Looks pretty, though I guess for someone just only now coming off the 128 bit generation, that's not really saying much

brandonk Oct 3, 2007

I recently spent some quality time with H3.  It's cool.  From what I can tell, certainly the best Halo yet, and to a degree, what the first two should've been.  The graphics are awesome, and that helps.

If I had a 360, I would've definitely picked it up by now.  Still on the fence on the 360, but the entire package, with HD DVD, and HDMI, has me thinking about picking one up.   Got the PS3...do I REALLY need an 360?  Don't know yet.  That Blue Dragon game sounds like something I'd be interested in, wonder if a special edition will show up on PS3...

Considering BD was financed and published by Microsoft, I'm thinking no.  There is a DS version on the way though.

Jay Oct 5, 2007

Well I just finished Halo 3 (on Heroic) and I have to say I loved it. I never got into the first one but this hooked me. Well, after the first level anyway. Really great battles and what was great about them was there were always many different ways to get through them. Enjoyable FPS.
