I agree on every one of those, especially Oldboy, man how I love that movie.  Haven't actually seen Sympathy For Lady Vengeance yet, but if it's anything like Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance and Oldboy (the other two movies in Chan-wook Park's revenge trilogy) then it gets two thumbs waaaaay up!

I've got My Sassy Girl lined up to watch tomorrow. Heard good things about it from a few sources so I'm quite looking forward to it. I'm a fan of Chan-wook Park's stuff too (who isn't). Lady Vengeance lived up to my expectations after Mr Vengeance and Oldboy.

Lady Vengeance is actually my favorite in the revenge trilogy. Things get fairly..severe.

I assume these are all various genres?  I've only seen A Tale of Two Sisters, but it was excellent.  Any other South Korean movies that are similar or highly recommended?

cheers,

They are mostly drama and arthouse. An example of "arthouse" is City of God. My favorite Korean films are not related to Tale of Two Sisters (but that was good). They make a lot of horror movies, but they usually aren't that good. They do an even worse job with science fiction (Natural City was pitiful). But the Koreans rule in making extremely realistic and truthful movies, especially the director Kim Ki Duk:

  My favorite directors are

  Hong Sang Su - http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0393254/

  Kim Ki Duk - http://us.imdb.com/name/nm1104118/

  Lee Chang Dong - http://us.imdb.com/name/nm0496969/

  POST EDIT:

I forgot about "Save the Green Planet". So, yes, Koreans can make good science fiction. (Also, one could argue that "My Sassy Girl" was science fiction. That movie was something else entirely.)

I've seen 2 Korean movies so far; old boy and another one of the same director. old boy was sick, but the other movie was not so good. I can't remember the name, but it was that movie about those criminals teaming up and kidnapping a family in an apartment.

Anyway, Korean cinema is interesting, but it doesn't appeal to me that much. I prefer Indian movies (no contest I know).

Jay Apr 17, 2006

I haven't seen many Korean films and all of them have been mentioned here already except for 'R-Point' which I would highly recommend. A creepy ghost story set in the Vietnam war. I didn't even know that there were South Koreans in the Vietnam war so I learned something new there. Anyway, it's a creepy film so if you like that sort of thing check it out.

Due to its popularity, I too have seen Tale of Two Sisters during what I would call an "asian horror film" marathon at my college. At said marathon, I saw:

The Eye
The Eye 2
Ringu
One Missed Call
Audition
A Tale of Two Sisters

Among those, Audition and Tale of Two Sisters were my favorite. I'd like to see more Korean films.

I thought the Eye/Eye 2 were awesome movies, too. How is One Missed Call?

Timt99 Apr 17, 2006

Holy cow man, Ramza, Audition was freaky. For some reason I was freaked out by that movie more than any other, and it was entertaining all the while. smile

Based on the above, you might want to check out the Korean movie 거미 숲, a.k.a Spider Forest. (Btw, the Korean title amuses me - it comes out like "gummy soup".)

Also, since you liked Audition, you'll probably like Gozu and Ichi the Killer.

One Missed Call is pretty good. It starts out feeling like a Ring copy but quickly develops into quite a creepy little film based around the idea of death. It has one of the cheatiest plot points later in the movie and never quite feels like an 'excellent' movie but is certainly worth a watch. It's one of the sanest Miike films I've seen as he seems to have kept quite reserved through the entire thing.

there is a tv drama for one missed call you can download as well... entertaining, but it borderlines on cheesey.. the fan subs are really bad engrish...    it stars a lot of the same people from other j-tv dramas...
