The fact their being sold seperately isn't as big of deal as the Final Fantasy I and II thing... there is a lot more game there. However, Star Ocean II isn't as long as some RPGs though.

As much as I liked Star Ocean in the past I honestly don't see what I saw in them now. In the past I'd would have said the combat and item creation was the main draw but when I tried to replay SO2 and SO3 I just couldn't do it.

Considering I absolutely hated Star Ocean 3 (idiotic AI, awful awful AWFUL story, stuck in a middle ages setting for half the game despite being a sci-fi rpg), would Star Ocean 1 and 2 be worth checking out for me?  Were those problems that came up with the third game that weren't around for the first two?

If you didn't like the fact you were on a underdeveloped planet for half the game in SO3 then I'd ignore SO2... it seems to be a running theme within the series that you end up in such a situation (seriously Fayt, shut the &^%$ up about the up3 already!). Storywise if you hated the *twist* in SO3 (I half liked it and half disliked it) there really isn't anything like that in the story, it's pretty typical fare.
