So what do you reckon?

Personally, I think it looks great. Batman Begins was a very pleasant surprise to me - I genuinely expected to hate it. But didn't. This one looks really good and the Joker seems excellent, although I do wonder exactly what he's asking - why so serious?

The thing that stands out as being slightly misplaced in my opinion is actually Batman himself. The moulded rubber suit still seems like a real throwback to the Burton era and almost all of the non-Batman bits seem entiely different.

Still, looks good. I'm hyped.

I loved Burton's Batman, and I haven't seen a non-animated Batman come close since. Batman Begins was good, although I feel that it wasn't as polished nor as energetic as Burton's film. Still, that's not to say this won't be a fun film... by the way, is it my imagination or is the Joker in the preview sounding a lot like Jack Nicholson?

Zane Dec 17, 2007

Total side note, but I found an inconsistency in Batman Begins that pretty much ruined the movie for me; well, analytically at least. If there was that device that would suck the water out of everything (as noted by the train scene where it was sucking the water up out of each successive manhole as the train passed over it), why wouldn't it suck the water out of everyone's bodies as well? We are 2/3rds water, thank you elementary school, so it only makes sense that if that thing can suck water up out of manholes from about a hundred feet up in the air, it could suck people dry that were standing mere feet away.

And that, my friends, ends Dr. Zane's scientific theorizing for the day.

XISMZERO Dec 17, 2007

Joker looks like a trainwreck nighmare; completely horrifying and disheveled unlike anything seen outside the comic. I'm looking forward to it...

Ryu Dec 17, 2007

I honestly don't know what to think of it.  I like the overall look of Joker, but it seems odd that his grin is drawn on (badly though, which I'd expect no less).

Ryu Dec 17, 2007

Zane, that's like my issue with Spider-Man 2's runaway train sequence.

Yup, the reason microwaves work so well in heating food is that microwaves are naturally absorbed by water. So, if you have something emitting a tremendous amount of microwave radiation, then anything that has a lot of water in it (such as oranges, lemonade, people, etc) would be in trouble. I thought about that as well while watching the film! Honestly, I thought the entire evil plot by the badguys was a bit too complicated. They should keep things simple, but I guess Hollywood doesn't ask scientists for input (sometimes I wonder if they ask anyone with a brain for input tongue

Crash Dec 17, 2007

That reminds me of the rail guns they had in the movie Eraser.  In the movie, they were supposed to be able to shoot rounds at speeds approaching the speed of light.  And yet...there was no kickback when the weapon is fired.  Conservation of momentum, people!  I wanted to see the bad guys propelled backwards at 10,000 miles per hour through brick walls whenever they fired their weapons!

That very first shot of Joker made me flinch; gave me a terrible Stephen King's "It" flash.  I had initial doubts with Ledger playing the role, but it's looking real promising now.  It's been said that he's done plenty of research and self-method techniques to nail a distinguished psychology and voice for the character.

I'm looking forward to the return of the supporting cast, too.  I just hope the story dictates that they have things to do, especially for Oldman, Caine, Freeman and Murphy.

Yeah, and that "Batpod" is looking pretty sweet.  ^_^

Holy crap!  I didn't even realize that was Ledger!  My mom's going to cry.  (That is, if she will ever see a movie with him in it again after he starred in that one movie... the title fails me right now... you know which one I'm talking about)

Oh yeah, "Brokeback Mountain".  Never saw it myself.

Brothers Grimm?  I heard it was bad.  I can't believe Sean Penn was offered the original choice for Joker... anyone think he'd have done a good job?  Personally, Mark Hamill has the voice for it; I don't know if he could pull off the look.

Looking at the cast list on IMDB, I have no idea why Katie Holmes turned down the role of Rachel Dawes... or why that character has to come back anyway.  I hate it when they change actors/actresses for characters.  I see they have a Harvey Dent and a Barbara Gordon, so that could lead to a sequel with Two-Face and Batgirl.  Speaking of sequels, it looks like Penguin WON'T happen, since Nolan finds the character "too far-fetched".  WTF!?  Bob Hoskins expressed interest in playing Penguin in this movie, when it was rumored (for some reason) to have Penguin in it.  Where does that leave Selina Kyle, Harley Quinn, and a Robin?

Did she turn it down or did they axe her?  I remember that she was universally criticized for her performance.

IMDB claims she was offered double of what she got in the first movie to return for this role.  Maybe the criticism is what kept her from returning, but seems like Nolan wanted her back.

I saw I Am Legend in the theater and Dark Knight was one of the previews, so I got to see Heath Ledger trying to act like Jack Nicholson. Good luck with that, buddy.

Anyway, I am quite confused as to why they made an enormous inconsistency in the storyline. My guess is that us, as the viewers, are supposed to ignore such a thing.

Ryu Dec 20, 2007

An "enormous inconsistency" from a trailer?  Apparently it worked, because I didn't see one.

They're talking about the discussion on the boards about a Batman Begins inconsistency. Not the trailer.

And on that note... it's funny you mention it Zane, because the very FIRST Batman movie, based on the TV shows of the 1960s (during the days of "Kapow" "Zammie" and Adam West etc etc) used a plot device in which water WAS sucked out of human beings. They like, took the leaders of the UN, and dehydrated them into powders. That was the villain's plot.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman_(1966_film)

so maybe that inconsistency was, in some backwards way, an HOMAGE to the old film?

Dude, have you seen Batman Begins and the first Batman with Keaton? In the first Batman, the Joker kills Wayne's parents. In Batman Begins, someone else (clearly not the Joker) kills Wayne's parents. That's why I further stated (as a guess), that we, as viewers, are supposed to ignore such a thing.

Also, I must make a further guess. Directors (of comic book movies) either don't care or are under no obligation to ensure that storylines from previous movie adaptations are not contradicted.

We are about to get a good example. As you know, The Hulk came out a few years ago. Another version is coming out early next year. My guess is that they will not continue where the previous story left off (in the rain forest). Rather, there will probably be a new explanation for the existence of the Hulk.

Jay Dec 21, 2007

Jodo, they're not part of the same series. The first Burton movie contradicts the comics too. Ad doesn't exactly fit with the Adam West show. It's meant to be taken on its own.

Yep.  The reason the Batman movies restarted is because Schumacher ruined the Burton series.  Hulk is rebooting because the first one was a flop.  Superman Returns is an odd one, because it seems to be connected to the early installments of the Superman movie series.

I had no idea. My incipient knowledge of Batman stems from the movie directed by Burton, so that is a fact (Category 2 existence) in my mind. However, I am flexible. Since each mind is different, there are multiple possible versions of the Batman story. In fact, I would dare say there are a minimum of 10,000,000,000 possible versions of Batman. So, we should be very thankful that only a few humans are making Batman movies.

Idolores Dec 23, 2007

Don't know if anyone else has heard about this, but . . .

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batman:_Gotham_Knight

Toyfare ran a small article on this. According to said article, there'll be six short segments, and Studio 4C (how do you do a "degree" symbol on a damn Mac?), Production I.G, and Studio Madhouse will be handling these bits, and according to Wikipedia, certain sources have been quoted as saying that Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paranoia Agent) will be directing one of these short stories, and that as a whole, they will act as a tie-between for Batman Begins (which I still haven't seen yet), and Dark Knight.

Ryu Dec 23, 2007

You have me intrigued, Idolores.  Thanks for bringing it to my attention!

I also believe there was a death of a crew member during the shooting of the Dark Night as well.

I loved his work ever since A Knight's Tale and am excited to see his portrayal of Joker.

I meant to post this earlier: The Dark Knight: 1966 Style.

I was worried when they first cast him as Joker, but the little I saw from the trailer was a surprisingly refreshing take on the character. It's so sad to see him go so young.

Ryu Jan 23, 2008

It is a shame what happened to him.  My condolescences to his family, especially his young daughter.  I'm curious if they rule out that it was a suicide.  CNN claims that there will be no autopsy Wednesday though, which I think is odd.

allyourbaseare Jan 23, 2008

So, did he finish working on the Batman film before this happened?

Jay Jan 23, 2008

Yep, apparently so.

Ryu Jan 23, 2008

To add on to my previous comment, CNN reported that the autopsy was inconclusive and may take up to 15 days, as well as added a few corrections to what was previously reported.  For the best coverage of current events, at least by US press, it seems it is best to wait until after they are no longer current in the hope that all the false rumors and sensationalist flights-of-fancy are retracted.

Ledger, dead:
http://www.nypost.com/seven/01222008/ne … 916418.htm

I have no sympathy whatsoever for that idiot. The first thing I said to my coworkers was, 'We're not rich and we're not trying to kill ourselves.' Everyone agreed with me. Didn't he stop to think about his daughter? Apparently, he totally lacked empathy. An even worse case than myself.

It isn't still clear if Ledger killed himself or not. And what I've heard, Ledger did have sleeping problems, getting only 2 hours of sleep or so in The Dark Knight shootings. So, maybe that had some effect also.

And still, in my eyes, you're the one lacking the empathy, and I wouldn't start talking he lacking empathy when we don't even know the full situation, and we never probably will.

Well, from what the media paints, his whole life seemed to be about his daughter.   One would imagine that the LAST thing he'd want to do is kill himself for the sake of leaving her.

But again, we don't know the whole story.  Would you muster any sympathy if it proved to be an accident afterall?

It's easier to hate than to sympathize. It would have to be one heck of an accident. The fact that there are drugs involved does not encourage sympathy. If he died in a plane crash or some type of inescapable disaster, then I would understand that death. I don't understand the type of dying that he did. It is too suspicious.
