...and someone thinks you're too loud and starts knocking on your floor from their ceiling or banging on your wall on the other side...  have you ever knocked back just for the hell of it?

I like me some good gaming late at night or a movie with bass.  Inevitably I get the knock on the wall/floor from the downstairs neighbor or person next door.  This annoys me.  lol  <sigh>  It'd be nice to have a residence of my own, but that's just not in the cards.

I dunno, maybe I just like being a jerk sometimes.  =p

I have a piano in my apartment and out of consideration for my neighbors, I don't play it after 8 pm. I suppose I could go until 10 pm (when the noise laws kick in) but I try to be nice. For my speaker system, my bass is disabled at all times. People in houses can use their subwoofers all they want. If you have someone living underneath you, it becomes very debatable.

As I frequently work the late shift and sleep in the daytime, I don't personally appreciate that people take it for granted that they don't need to care about people next door until the night.

I feel like that annoying people tend to show zero tolerance for others (I find this tendency both in the real life and on Internet). I was assaulted by the guy who lived upstairs from me and was accused of the big loud bang he claimed occurred while I was sleeping. However, he was a pure nutcake and had at least a dozen of unemasculated cats in his small room, and once he had too many kittens, he literally threw away those poor kittens from his room. The ugly smell and meows from his room was abysmal, yet he blamed anybody else to make a noise! As he used violence, I asked a neighbor to call on the police, and fortunately, the prosecutor no-billed him but caged him for ten days.

You can't always be nice. I try to be (at work) and man, it really gnaws at you. Can help but think how good a "screw you" or a "do your own &^%$ing  job" would feel every now and then.

That's probably not at annoying as when you're trying to sleep in your apartment and the person above you is playing video games with the bass turned up so much that it keeps you awake because the light fixtures in your ceiling are shaking. People want to be comfortable and to be able to sleep soundly in their homes, and I think that doing shit like that late at night (probably past 11/11:30) is really inconsiderate. If it's to the point where you "inevitably" get a knock from someone as a signal to turn it down, it's probably so disrupting that they can't even relax in their own homes, which might be a signal that you should start being more considerate to the people living around you.

A rather timely topic. Last night I was studying around 1 AM and I heard some yelling outside of my unit. A drunk woman had ran into some guy's car and had beat on his door until he got out of bed. She was cussing at him, yelling "Don't you f--- with me!!" and "Are you f---ing with me? You don't want to do that. I have f---ing money! I will f---ing pay you! I will f---ing pay you!" I don't think they were a couple, because the guy was talking to the police on his cell phone, claiming some crazy lady was yelling at him.

I don't have a speaker system for my TV; only my computer. Most of the time I use headphones, which I prefer. I would use them even if I lived in a house with no potential to disturb anyone.

The biggest noise pollution problems in my complex are the people with subwoofers in their cars and the gas powered leaf blowers.

I think Zane said it best. Be considerate to others, otherwise they won't be considerate back, and maybe even beat the crap out of your some day... if not that, they can definitely complain to the landlord/police. If you're going to play loud music at night, you can turn it down or get headphones.

cheers,

I was just about to say this. They have wireless headphones that can be hooked up to most TV's, might be a good option.

Seconded; I got a pair of wireless headphones, myself; unfortunately, most, if not all, flat screen TVs DO NOT have an input for headphones; still good for use with my computer, especially when you consider how much music I play off of it.

Even then, I tend to be overzealous, so I keep my noise down; the last apartment I lived in was pretty quiet, despite being chock full of college-age people. Either that, or the walls were jut thick, so they never heard me, and I never heard them...

The apartment I lived in before that was full of drunken, belligerent people, people always getting into loud fights and arguments...and that place was more expensive, and more fixed-up too...point is, just because an apartment complex is well maintained, doesn't mean the people that live there are sane; and just because a complex is run-down, doesn't mean that the people who live there are human trash...

I've never had anyone knock on my door to keep the noise down, and the last time I ever had to do that myself was when I was in the dorms back in college...if someone ever feels the need to do that, it should serve as a sign of you being too loud...

James O Mar 24, 2010

All good suggestions - I'll probably have to do the headphones (my receiver has an input, and I have headphones with a long cord).  Earlier than 11 PM I think I should be ok without them... I like my 7.1 surround sound system...   and speaking of which...

How late is too late in your opinion to be doing stuff?  I'm by myself with no real responsibility to answer to anyone but myself, so as you gathered I tend to stay up until I feel like going to bed, which can vary (usually anywhere from midnight to 2:30 AM).

I live in an apt and my rule is do unto others...  Both my next door neighbor and my upstairs neighbor work a second shift and are up late til like 3 am ish so I get the luxury of playing things loud til 10 or 11. My upstairs neighbor routinely gets nailed by her bf pretty consistently between 12 and 2 am some nights. If she has the balls to say anything all I have to do is play that card. I want to hear you getting railed about as much as you want to hear me yelling on vent to my World of Warcraft raid in the middle of a boss.

I pay just as much to live in my apt as they do and while it's not okay to be totally inconsiderate it's also not okay to be completely complacent and not enjoy yourself.

the_miker Mar 24, 2010

I've gotten the bang on the wall/ceiling before and all I do is politely turn the volume down.  I'm not a confrontational person by nature, it only leads to more bad stuff happening.  Huge amounts of bass isn't really my thing anyway so it's usually set to low, but I do prefer the volume itself at a decent level.  I don't even own a woofer, just two giant front speakers that are angled directly in the corners of my room which do give off some bass.

For some reason I found that sentence to be ridiculously funny. I think it helps that I've met you before so I can actually picture you doing that. Tonight be sure to yell "damn you Adamantoise why won't you die!!?" directly into the vent. tongue

Dear Jodo,

if methane is supposed to be a dry gas, then how come some farts are wet?

I go to bed around 2:30 AM as well, but I make it a point never to play loud music/videogames through speakers after 10 PM. I ALWAYS use headphones at night, and I've been doing so for as long as I can remember.

Just thinking about the answer is disturbing.

Well, I need to make it one of my life goals to get my own house one day... tonight I played some more God of War III late - on the headphones - gotta say, it was quite less of an experience... sad  There's no point to having a 7.1 surround sound system if I can't enjoy myself... sad  sucks... i'm going to bed lol
