Here is a modern example of brand power growing from an one-off innovative sleeper hit into a corporate franchise.  Just look at those prices rise!

2004 - Katamari Damacy (PS2) - $19.99
2005 - We Love Katamari (PS2) - $29.99
2006 - Me & My Katamari (PSP) - $39.99

If I remember correctly, releasing Katamari Damacy was a bit of a risk, so they released it as a budget title.  And now that it has proven successful, they jack up the price.

I read, I believe in an Electronic Gaming Monthly Magazine, that Katamari Damacy isn't as popular in Japan as it is in America - looks kinda like the game's distinct "crazy Japanesness" really appeals to the American fanboys.

But i guess that we can't help it since we all love Katamari.

Personally, I think that the blocky though strangely appropriate graphics, catchy music, simple but challenging objectives, and unique concept had more to do with it than it being "crazy Japanese." If an American company had created something like this that was equally fun, I would've bought it. Heck, Tetris caught on, and not because it was "distinctly Russian."

I agree with you, Schala. Katamari is just universally quirky, and isn't idiosynchratic (did I use that word correctly, I wonder?) with Japan, outside of references to certain asian foodstuffs.
