The Tokyo City Philharmonic Orchestra will be performing all eleven Dragon Quest Symphonic Suites in sequence in concerts starting April 28, 2019, and ending March 27, 2020. I've been to a few of their Dragon Quest concerts before and they always put on a good, purely symphonic show. (No video projection, emcees, or other superfluous stuff, though the conductor - who has played his share of Dragon Quest games - tends to talk for quite a while at several parts in each show).

Here's a flyer with all the dates, and a page at Japanese ticket site Ticket Pia with current for-sale shows. For anyone thinking to visit Tokyo around the concert dates I would absolutely recommend their concerts - especially for DQ I-VI and IX.

Apart from these Tokyo City Phil concerts, almost every month there's a Dragon Quest concert happening  somewhere in Japan. The best place to find these is the concert listings on Koichi Sugiyama's official website (figuring out the exact location will require sorting through some kanji).

I wish I could go.

I attended the Dragon Quest III concert on May 16. This was my third time I think to hear Dragon Quest III Symphonic Suite in concert, and every time I'm inclined to believe that among all the Dragon Quest symphonic suites, this one benefits most from being heard live. The Dragon Quest III Symphonic Suite album is quite good in its own right (especially the London Philharmonic Orchestra version), but some of its less striking, more traditionally Classical arrangements like "Rondo" are easier to appreciate in a live symphonic setting, while in great arrangements like "Prologue", "Distant Memories", and "Heavenly Flight" the interplay between strings and solo instruments is even more enjoyable when you can hear every little detail of the live performance. And you simply can't ask for a better end to an orchestral game music concert than the all-time classic final battle and ending theme combo of "Fighting Spirit" and "Into the Legend".

This was my first time to see a concert in Tokyo Opera City. The concert hall has surprisingly little incline in the first floor seating area, so what I thought was a choice seat right in the middle left me with a pretty limited view of the brass and winds. (Anyone who'd like to have a good view of the entire orchestra there should consider the front of the first balcony.) Can't complain about the acoustics though - both that and the performance itself sounded great.

Up next in a couple weeks is the best symphonic suite of the series, Dragon Quest IV.

Despite not having really heard DQ3 music before going to that one concert with you, this alone made it well worth it.  So good!
