A recent Reuters article discussing the declining fortunes of the UMD movie market states that studios are pressuring Sony to come up with a way to either play UMDs on TVs or make the PSP be able to display images on TVs.  Who knows if anything will come of this, but I for one will be crossing my fingers for a new PSP model with A/V outs.

Thank god...Hopefully, they'll make things simple and have a way for PS3 to play UMD's (through an add-on, like the Game Boy Player). Or even PS2 (maybe via one of the USB ports). I remember seeing something about the UMD market shrinking rapidly and a way to play PSP games and movies on a TV was the first thing to cross my mind. Thank goodness people are starting to stop essentially buying movies twice.

Even better: Hopefully PSP games will allow usage of actual PS2 controllers. That little analog stub worries me, from handling in-store demos.

Also of note: Wasn't there an earlier article that PSP games cost about the same to make as a full-blown PS2 game? Hmm...

Score five points for DS if this does indeed turn out true. Decisions, decisions...

The UMD concept is pretty bad... like GCN-GBA connectivity bad.  I'm not surprised to see it failing; it is ridiculous.

You're right, it is ridiculous.  They are out of their minds for charging as much for a UMD movie as a fully-DVD-quality movie, none of their movies are even original.  My friend and I discussed whether or not they'd try to make the PS3 be able to play PSP movies, and we both agreed it was unlikely.  Sony will probably continue to try to push the PSP for all intents and purposes.  Besides, allowing either the PS2 or PS3 to read UMD discs would be one step closer to people ditching PSP and/or playing PSP games/copies on a full-size console.

To add fuel to the fire, the latest EGM rumor column claims that Sony is working on a new model of the PSP with some new features.

raynebc Mar 31, 2006

Who could have possibly seen that coming.

Adam Corn Mar 31, 2006

The idea of people spending money for movies in a solely portable format with inferior specs was ludicrous from the beginning.  Like MD but worse (at least MDs you could play on a home stereo or record to).  I can't believe UMD movies got as much support as they did in the first place.

As for a new PSP model, I have no intention of getting a PSP until they at least give it an AV out connector and make the memory card slot dual-format with SD.  And a large amount of built-in flash memory or better yet a 30 gig hard drive would be nice.  Then we'll see.

Better yet, Sony should team up with Apple so that the PSP can play iTunes.  Heading down the portable device path, they'll all just be competing for attention when it comes to playing videos and music.  The more expensive ones will also be able to play video games just out of consequence that they were supposed to be video game devices.  All this independant competition will push for more proprietary formats, and nobody will win until more than one company decides to collaborate on the next great standardized product.

Whoa, whoa...would this be a way for me to play Powered Up without having to pay $200-something for a system I don't want?

I heartily approve of this.

If Sony releases a device that allows the PSP to be played on a TV, much the same wasy as GBA games can be played on the TV, then I would consider purchasing a PSP.  Otherwise, who cares about UMDs being played on TVs?  I don't see what the point of that is, especially considering how cheap DVD players are.  Well, you have to remember that Sony was the company that released Betamax and was certain that it would destroy VHS...

cheers,

O_o That destroys the whole point of getting a Portable system. I can understand why people would buy games to play on the tv, but to get a PSP to play it like a PS2 does not make sense.

No, it adds value to getting a portable system.  It's entirely reasonable to want to be able to play PSP media on a big screen TV when you're at home, especially if
1) you're paying $200 for the system
2) you're spending $20 on movies for it
3) the portable's graphics are almost at the level of current consoles

TerraEpon Apr 2, 2006

Exactly, especially when there's games that are only for that console. I'd love to play all five of my DS games on a bigger screen...

I see, I didn't think about that as I don't have a big TV.
