Soundtrack Central The best classic game music and more

B-mies Jun 18, 2009

I'm currently in Japan, and will head home at the end of August. Do you know of any video game music concerts here in Japan during the summer?

I already know about the FFVI concert in Yokohama, which I have the tickets to. Apparently there is a FFT concert in November, which I unfortunately can't attend. My searches on google didn't come up with anything either sad

VGL is in september, and I leave just a few weeks before the concert =/

Thanks for mentioning Press Start! I might be going to that one. It seems like this is the setlist --> http://fami-web.jp/pressstart/pro.html (?)

Carl Jun 18, 2009

Yes that's the setlist.

Also, I just noticed Dragon Quest IX Concert, woah!  (added above)

B-mies Jun 18, 2009

Thank you Carl for your extensive info package! I think a Press Start + Dragon Quest combo in Tokyo would do good for my soul. Regarding the DQ concerts it seems that you can buy tickets in many places for the one in Kyoto, but only from the reception hall for the Tokyo one? That's what I gathered with google translate.

And it seems that the DQIX soundtrack is released on Aug 5th (I think Carl pointed that out). The name of the soundtrack is weird though: Dragon Quest IX Protectors of the Starry Sky Synthesizer Version & Original Soundtrack

Herrkotowski Jun 18, 2009

I believe its titled that way because it includes the original soundtrack for the DS as well as a synthesized version of the Symphonic Suite that will surely be released a few months from now.

Amazingu Jun 18, 2009

Thanks Carl!

Always nice when a VGM concert comes to the Kansai area, so I'll be sure to head to the concert in Kyoto!

Carl Jul 15, 2009 (edited Jul 15, 2009)

Korg DS-10 Birthday Party.
July 25 at Club Axxcis, 500 person limit.

VGM Composers who will be performing include:
Kimitaka Matsumae (Harrier from SST Band), Keishi Yonao, and possibly Nobuyoshi Sano (he posted the info).
Looks to be about a dozen performers total.  Denkitribe does some awesome sounding stuff.

xanadujin Jul 16, 2009

Whoa, didn't know the DQIX concert was coming to Kyoto as well.  Guess I'll be going to that one.  Amazingu, see you there? smile

B-mies, also, keep an eye on LINEAR's activity.  LINEAR is a club event in Tokyo that focuses on game and anime.  They have a show usually every 2-3 months with some pretty big names.  The next event is July 25th and Yuzo Koshiro and Kplecraft are among the DJs playing.  I still need to get my ass to one these myself. @_@

Yup! Already have my ticket!
I got the cheapest option, the B seats, second floor, Row L-3, number 4 smile

Great info, I'll have to bookmark that LINEAR page.
Looks like Shinji Hosoe will be DJing too (as Sampling Master MEGA) on July 25th.

Previous party (32) had Hiroshi Okubo from nanosounds there!
I'd like to get myself to one of these sometime too...

Carl Sep 7, 2009

Apparently Mitsuyoshi Takenobu had a live performance on 7/24 to promote his latest album.

Adding a few more to that list near the top, including DQ Brass Quintet.

Zuntata just played a show (Discontinental 2) on Sept.11 for the release party of their "Space Invaders Extreme 2 -Audio Element-" CD
http://zuntata.jp/pickup/dscn2.html

2009 seems to have turned into the biggest year for live vgm ever.

XISMZERO Sep 15, 2009

Not a VGM show but Motoaki Furukawa and Voyager have released a Live DVD of their original music. It's a private label item and it's high(er) priced than a regular DVD at 7,000 yen. I've asked Kahori if she could stock a few.

I've never seen Furukawa in any live setting, which makes me excited so watch that video below!

Holy...

Final Fantasy Tactics Orchestral?  Yes, please!!

Anymore info on that by any chance?

Adam Corn Sep 15, 2009

Try here smile

Carl, any chance you could add links for those concerts which have dedicated forum threads to that handy-dandy list of yours? smile  Or do you mind if I do it myself?

Also there was the recent Dragon Quest ballet, which was basically an orchestra concert plus visuals.

Ahh, so instead of doing another EXTRA Hyper VGM show this year, they're doing this "Live 5pb.2009" to put the focus on singers/vocalists instead.

It's still vgm-related, as ZIZZ BAND is listed (members of ZIZZ Studio have worked on lots of vgm albums, click on all those individual members on vgmdb and see they've each done a lot) and some of those singers have performed on vgm albums too.

Arcubalis Sep 15, 2009

Show didn't seem like it was going to happen at all.  Got eaten up by VGL Japan.

Thanks for ZIZZ BAND info, Carl. But it's a pity. I was hoping that Hyper Game Music Event might become a historic event as the Game Music Festival...

Carl, don't forget the Persona Music Live 2009 Velvetroom in Wel City Tokyo:

Btw, in this page it's possible to see samples from the upcoming Persona Music Live DVD:

Extremely disappointing.

After seeing the sudden change in crowd reaction last year when Idolm@aster / Famison 8-Bit took the stage, I questioned exactly how many people there came specifically to see them.  That still doesn't explain Betta Flash.  They were the weakest performance of the show last year.

It also seems that Twice is the Charm lately:
A 2nd show for Persona Velvet Room, a 2nd Gyakuten Saiban Musical, and 2 scheduled shows for FF Tactics.

XISM, thanks for the reminder about Furukawa & Voyager's DVD, I had been watching the M's Art page earlier in the year to see when it would come out, but then I forgot all about it for a while...  It's good to see that it's finally out, time to set up a middleman purchase!

In 3 more days is another LINEAR DJ PARTY, number 34, in Nakano.
sampling masters MEGA, quad (luvtrax), Masayoshi Minoshima, Atsushi Ohara

Holy crap!!  I love Furukawa!  If you do end up buying one off Kahori, please please let me know if it's worth the high price.  I'd gladly buy one too if you think it's worth it since your taste in music is very similar to mine.

Cedille Sep 24, 2009

Sort of off-topicish, but it appears the VGL in Japan is getting a backlash for its relatively poor management, lazy performance, too Western heavy setlists and blah, but one entry of Yuji Takenouchi (aka TECHNOuchi)'s blog reveals several prominent game companies forced VGL not to use game footage, not to advertise the concert with the names of particular companies, and even specified the track to perform, neither of which he claims wouldn't otherwise be the case with concerts outside of Japan. As a result, VGL didn't progress as intended, and the ticket didn't sell well. I don't think this explains all of the criticism it gets, though.

Late Update: Seems there was a doujin concert called "Chokkana" held at Studio Coast right after the C76 event. (same venue that those EXTRA shows where at.)

Tickets for the Live 5pb. 2009 are sold out, so apparently vocal singers really ARE a bigger draw than VGM.

the EXTRA series will probably get canned and replaced with more vocal shows then, if that's what sells more tickets.... >_<

Oh, and AYA twittered that her and the Supersweep boss SHINJI will be Special Guest DJing at an "Area 88" party on Halloween night (Oct.31)

While that's unfortunate this is common with music everywhere. Vocals driven music is more popular than instrumental music in all genres and areas, not just within the game media.
