New PSP Wipeout announced. This is excellent news. Pure was stunning and I have high hopes for this one. Info over at www.wipeoutzone.com

It seems nobody cared about the announcement so I can't imagine anyone will care that it's finally available but I picked it up yesterday after waiting over half the year for it to come out. It's excellent. I'd say it's easily the best looking game on the PSP and, importantly, the tracks are superb. There's a real mix-up in modes this time around which throws in much more variety.
Everything in this one seems to have fallen into place.

9/10 on IGN too apparently.

This one slipped by me, sorry!  Though to be honest, the last WipEout I liked was 3.  I played Fusion on the PS2 and that was, well, trash.  I've heard awesome things about Pure, but no PSP, you know?  Anyway wasn't Pulse meant to be on the PS3, originally?

WipEout is a lot of fun, especially since F-ZERO has become so disappointing since the steller 64 game, so cheers to the new one!

EDIT:  Change "liked" to "loved"  I *heart* Wip3out.

Yeah, WO3 was my favourite too. I still put on the special edition on a regular basis. Pure didn't quite reach the heights of the earlier WOs but was genius compared with Fusion and a very strong title. So far, Pulse feels like an improved version of Pure.

Has some great features though, inclusing online racing and a skin editor. Check out my Mignight EG.X - http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y26/Do … ips03b.jpg

Hmm, what do you think about the driving Jay?

See, the reason I ask is because one of the things I appreciated most about 3 (and probably by extension, XL), is the unforgiving driving system.  At lower classes you can pretty much cruise by without thinking about the brakes, but at Rapier or, God forbid, Phantom, you pretty much have to drive perfectly, and if you don't - you lose big time.  I really like the 'harshness' of the system, in the sense that it taught you to become a much better driver in the game, ironically making it more closer to F1 then any actual F1 game I've ever played.  That kind of disappears in Fusion (alongside everything else), and honestly, while Pure looks better in videos, the driving style (and reliance on weapons) seems to be closer to Fusion then the other games.

Wait a minute, now. You didn't like GX but liked X? GX was a masterpiece of game, thanks to Sega/AV. GX was happening -- I always thought Wipeout was dull, dry, insipid.

Well, let me put it this way - I didn't NOT like GX.  I was just not head over heels the same I way I had been over X (which I still hold to be one of the best racing games there.)  Granted, I've only played GX at other peoples' houses, and given some steller reviews (http://www.insertcredit.com/reviews/fzero/index.html) and more time, I might stand corrected.  But, having spoken with the guys on MFO forums (albeit a long time ago), it seems that theres as good of a chance that GX might not really meet X.  Also, I've played all the GBA games.  I really like Maximum Velocity, for taking the SNES game and putting a new spin on it.  I really dislike the other two (Falcon Densetsu and Climax) for basically copying Maximum Velocity and another game (X for the former, GX for the latter) and trying to blend both.  They came off to be as very unoriginal (if I can think of any parallel, I would say it mimics the three Donkey Kong Land games for Game Boy, if you know what I mean.)  So this is what I mean by disappointment since X.

Wow, I have to say that I strongly disagree here.  I thought F-Zero X was mediocre at best, while GX was extremely tightly put together (if mercilessly difficult).  On the GBA side, I'd have to say that Maximum Velocity is the worst game in the entire series.  It was developed by a no-name developer outside of Nintendo, the control is completely off, and it's pretty terrible overall.  I loved Falcon Legend and Climax, both of which are very fun to play, but I agree that the two are a little too similar too each other.  I don't think either rips off of Maximum Velocity though -- they're both actually fun to play, something I cannot say for Maximym Velocity.

csK Dec 15, 2007

Heh, yea, that is a pretty strong disagreement.  But honestly, things like what you say about GX do make me really want to play it again.  I've heard and read many good things about the game, and maybe it was my state of mind or whatever that I didn't get quite into it as I imagined.  Though, I can't really say I feel the same about Falcon and Climax.  I'd say the thing I liked most about MV is that the vehicles feel totally different, much more then in other games.  Not that theres not variety in F-Zero, but the styles of the vehicles is nothing like, say, Wip3out, where it almost feels impossible to play one team after getting used to the style of another.

I'm curious, what didn't you like about X?  I really thought that game was fantastic on many different levels, from the tracks, to the speed, to the music, and yes, even the graphics (which perfectly fit that 'on the razor edge and you're on the edge of your life' theme that it seemed to be going for... if that makes any sense)

My big problem with it is that it didn't "feel" like an F-Zero game, especially given how this one was returning to a style largely similar to the original's.  Falcon and Climax felt like logical extensions and developments from the original SNES F-Zero.  For me, Maxmium Velocity just felt like a sloppy wannabe F-Zero.

I found it to be rather bland.  The level design was pretty uninspired, the graphics were dull, and the music and sense of speed really didn't do much for me.  This was the second F-Zero game (not counting the Japan-only BS upgrade of the original) and it just really let me down.  That said, I did really like how they added the ability to attack and destroy competing vehicles, and the Death Race mode was great.  But GX is brilliant in compairison.  It takes all the great ideas in X and makes them work.  The graphics and sense of speed are both fantastic, the music is kicked up, and the massive polish all around (480p and Widescreen included) really make it something special.  I really wish it wasn't so difficult, but it's still a great game.
