I've been doing some reflection, lately.

What was your first game on each console that you got? For the most part, it's always been either a Mario or Final Fantasy game for me, the Wii being the only exception.

NES (1989): Super Mario Bros.

SNES (1991): Super Mario World

SEGA Genesis (1993): Sonic 2 (not Sonic the first; it was already rare at that stage in its life cycle)

N64 (1997): Super Mario 64

PSX (2000): Final Fantasy VII

PS2 (2002): Final Fantasy X

Wii (2008): Opoona / No More Heroes (bought simultaneously) - borrowed Super Mario Galaxy the following Winter.

It also seems like I've always bought (or been gifted) my consoles in the Winter (usually around Christmas), except for the Wii, which I bought in the Summer (June/July).

tri-Ace Super Fan Jun 7, 2012 (edited Jun 8, 2012)

NES - Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt
SNES - Super Mario All-Stars
Game Boy - Tetris
N64 - Super Mario 64
PlayStation - Final Fantasy VII and Star Ocean: The Second Story (bought at the same time)
Dreamcast - Sega Smash Pack
Genesis - Castlevania: Bloodlines
GBA - Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
GameCube - Super Monkey Ball
PS2 - Star Ocean 3: Till the End of Time
Wii - Wii Sports and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (it was bought for Zelda, but obviously we were stuck with the pack-in too)
360 - Infinite Undiscovery
PSP - Star Ocean: First Departure (although I had imported Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth awhile before that, but First Departure finally made me buy the system [and it came with the system, seeing as I bought the Japanese limited edition Star Ocean PSP])

Those are the systems I got new sometime their respective era. The systems I bought used well past their time I often acquired with a bunch of games at once.

Interesting topic.

IIRC, let's see, in approximate chronological order or getting them:

NES: With SMB/Duck Hunt pack in

Gameboy: With Tetris pack in

SNES: With SMW pack in, and bought Castlevania IV and Final Fantasy II at the same time, IIRC

PSX: Final Fantasy VII

N64: Not positive, maybe Mischief Makers. Pretty sure it wasn't Mario 64 at least

Saturn: I think I bought Nocturne in the Moonlight (SOTN) before I actually got the console....not too sure

Genesis: I dunno, a Sonic game?
Sega CD: I think it came with some FMV game, but I bought Lunar 1 first most likely

GBC: Tetris DX probably, no idea what first 'true' GBC game was

Dreamcast: Marvel vs Capcom 2, I think I got around the same day as the console, and probably something else as well

PS2: Don't remember. It might have been Dark Cloud, but that seems wrong somehow. What was the earliest Square game on PS2?

GBA: Castlevania Circle of the Moon most likely

Gamecube: I....hmmm....drawing a blank.

DS: Drawing a blank as well, possibly Meteos though

PSP: Parodius Portable

I think that's it. This was way harder than I thought.

In order of acquisition, not release:

Atari 2600: Dig Dug - remains one of my favorite old-school games.  This is my first video gaming memory, actually!

NES: Super Mario Bros. - Not much to say about this that hasn't been said before by me or many others.  Yay.

Atari Lynx - Chip's Challenge - great puzzle game, but some of the levels fried my childhood mind.

TurboGrafx-16: Bonk's Adventure - My dad was convinced this console would blow away the competition.  It clearly did not, but I still LOVE it.  And Bonk is great!

SNES: Super Mario World - Have a hard time choosing between this and SMB3 as my favorite 2D Mario.

N64: Super Mario 64 - Took a break from games for a while and then got sucked back in by the one-two punch of Yoshi's Island and then playing this at a friend's house.

Playstation: Final Fantasy VII - I originally played FF7 on PC because I didn't want to have to get a Playstation.  Ended up buying one for FF8 and then got FF7 cheap to play (again) first.

Turbo Duo: Cosmic Fantasy 2 - super old school, but I'd wanted a Turbo CD for a long time and did quite enjoy it - especially for a story I felt was ahead of its time in a JRPG.

GBA: Castlevania: Circle of the Moon - Not my favorite of the metroidvanias, but still solid.  Remember having a darn hard time seeing what was going on since it was the original GBA.

Sega Saturn: Panzer Dragoon Saga - remains one of my favorite RPGs.

Sega Dreamcast: Skies of Arcadia - Trying to decide if Xenoblade overtakes it.  Otherwise my #1 FAVORITE RPG.

Gamecube: Super Monkey Ball - LOVE.  LOVE LOVE LOVE.  I can't believe how hard this series nosedived.  The original is still one of my favorite Gamecube games.

PS2: Final Fantasy X - Originally planned to get a PS2 because of Xenosaga, but this convinced me early.  Still really like FFX despite its flaws.

Nintendo DS: Feel the Magic XY/XX - Cool intro to the touchscreen with great music and really interesting graphics.  Not the most amazing game ever, but I liked it.

PSP: Legend of Heroes IV - yeah, the English version.  Terrible translation and not a great port, but I'd always wanted to play that game and still ended up liking the story.

Wii: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess - The slowest and most plodding of all the Zelda games, I still had a blast playing through it the first time.

Xbox 360: Blue Dragon - Was totally blown away by the graphics and it felt good to play a solid, old-school RPG with a great Uematsu soundtrack.

PS3: I THINK MGS4 (I bought my PS3 mostly for backwards compatibility at the time since I had an opportunity to get a decent deal on one of the old models when the slim came out - the first thing I played on it was Persona 3).  MGS4 is... okay.

3DS: Pilotwings Resort - didn't like it as much as Pilotwings 64, but it was still fun.

Wanderer Jun 7, 2012 (edited Jun 7, 2012)

NES: Super Mario Bros. I have a vivid memory of the first time I played this game. I was killed by the first Goomba. My dad laughed.

Gameboy: Tetris. (Although my most fondest memory of a game on this system remains Final Fantasy Adventure, followed by Link's Awakening.)

SNES: Super Mario World. Great game, a classic.

N64: Super Mario 64. I never actually owned this system. My dad had one and I almost never saw him so it took me a few years to get through Zelda (and Mario 64).

PSX: Final Fantasy VII. Like many, I bought the system when this game came out. Totally worth it.

Dreamcast: I'm pretty sure it was Sonic Adventure. I bought it for Skies of Arcadia.

GBA: Castlevania - Circle of the Moon (I think).

Gamecube: PROBABLY Super Mario Sunshine but I'm not positive. I didn't own a great deal of games for this console and in retrospect, I regret owning it.

PS2: Final Fantasy X (similar situation to VII. Waited until there was a game out I really wanted the system for). Still one of my favorite games.

DS: I honestly don't remember. I didn't own a lot of games for it.

Wii: Wii Sports, of course! tongue Ultimately, I bought the system for Super Mario Galaxy.

PS3: MGS4 (which I wasn't impressed by and never finished). I bought the system in preparation for FFXIII, which I'd say in hindsight was a big mistake but I've gotten a lot of pleasure out of other games on the system (like the Uncharted series). It's also proven to be a very efficient media system.

X360: I'm not actually sure what I ended up buying this for. It might have been Mass Effect or Lost Odyssey. I don't play the system nearly as much as the PS3 (and I've had to replace it once).

Smeg Jun 7, 2012

My first NES game was Back to the Future. Mom thought I wouldn't be interested in the same old pack-in game that everyone else had, and gosh darn it I just loved those movies, didn't I? Bless her heart.

Amazingu Jun 7, 2012 (edited Jun 7, 2012)

In order of acquisition:

NES: I never owned that famous Mario/Duck Hunt cartridge until much much later, so when I got my NES, I bought Popeye (it was cheap, sue me) and Super Mario Bros 2. The latter was pretty much the reason I bought the console, and MAN did it not disappoint. Good times.

Gameboy: Tetris, since it came with the package.

SNES: Super Mario World. Obviously. Possibly the best launch game ever.

N64: Super Mario 64. Again, pretty obvious. Was really into it for the longest time, but in hindsight it's probably one of my least favorite Mario games.

Playstation: Resident Evil. The very reason I bought a PSX. I rented the machine and this game once before, just to see what it was about, and it was AWESOME. The series has gone through a lot, but the first game is still one of my favorites.

Genesis: I was a bit of a late-comer to this console, having been a bit of a Nintendo fanboy until the N64 turned out to just be kind of ass. I had played Sonic games before though, and this is the main reason I decided to pick up a Genesis on the cheap in Japan. I think I bought it together with the 4 main Sonic games. Those games are still fantastic to this day.

GBA: Castlevania: Circle of the Moon and Mario Kart. Ended up hating CotM (incredibly frustrating and way too dark to see) but the GBA Mario Kart is my second favorite in the series after the SNES original.

Sega Dreamcast: Marvel vs. Capcom 2. The main reason I bought the machine. Amazing game, but I totally can't get into it now anymore.

Gamecube: Resident Evil remake. To this day, probably the best remake I've ever played. I could do without those goddamn Crimson Heads though.

PS2: Street Fighter EX 3. The PS2 had a sucky launch line-up in Japan. This one was the least bad. Sold it off not too long after though, because, yeah, it's still bad.

Sega Master System: Picked it up for 2 Euros (!!) at a flea market, but it didn't include any games. Still haven't bought any either, haha.

Nintendo DS (Lite): New Super Mario Bros. It was okay, but not nearly as good as any of the 2D Marios before it.

Wii: Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. I seem to recall liking my first playthrough, but couldn't get myself to go through it again. Never touched it anymore since, and have no real desire to.

Xbox 360: Blue Dragon. Got lured in by the names of Sakaguchi and Uematsu, and although Uematsu definitely did not disappoint, Sakaguchi was kinda running on an uninspired auto-mode. Not bad, but meh.

PS3: MGS4. Hands down my least favorite MGS to play, but man were the cutscenes ever awesome.

PSP: Dissidia. I actually won a PSP, but I won it right around Dissidia came out, which I was really interested in, so that worked out excellently. Dissidia is probably my favorite fighting game series ever, by the way. So awesome.

3DS: Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracles. It was the only launch title that seemed worth owning, and it was another entertaining puzzle romp, certainly. It also serves well as a title to show off the system's capabilities since it looks pretty and the 3D effect makes it look like a diorama type thingy.

XLord007 Jun 8, 2012 (edited Jun 8, 2012)

NES: I didn't get my own NES until 2002 when a co-worker sold me his system and game collection for $30. I believe I got nine games in the bundle.

GB: Tetris. It came with the system and I couldn't afford any other games. The first game I got after that was Super Mario Land as a gift.

SG: Didn't pick up a Genesis until 1998 when it was super cheap. Bought Castlevania: Bloodlines and Sonic Classics with it.

SNES: I won Contra III from Nintendo Power's trading card game in February 1993 before I owned the system. My parents bought me the Mario World bundle soon after.

PSX: Final Fantasy VII. I had borrowed a buddy's PSX earlier in the year and was already sold on it, so I just need the big gun to be released and then I jumped in.

N64: Super Mario 64. This was the first system I ever bought at launch, and Pilotwings 64 didn't interest me.

GBC: While I bought a Japanese system prior to the U.S. launch, I didn't buy any games until the U.S. launch when I picked up Link's Awakening DX and Quest for Camelot on the same day. Guess which one I later sold cause it was a piece of crap.

DC: Space Channel 5. Picked up the DC when Sega offered a $50 Mail in Rebate which they tried to renege on until I called them and screamed at enough people to get my effing check.

GBA: F-Zero for Game Boy Advance. Bought a Japanese unit somewhere between the Japanese and U.S. launches with the terrible first GBA F-Zero game that wasn't made by Nintendo. Notice how much better the next two were.

PS2: Street Fighter EX3. Picked this up months before I got the system and later wished I didn't.

XB: Project Gotham Racing. I loved MSR on the DC so this was a Day 1 for me. Sadly, it wasn't at all what I was hoping for.

NGC: Luigi's Mansion and Wave Race: Blue Storm. Grabbed both of them on launch day and later purged them both from my collection.

DS: Super Mario 64 DS and Feel the Magic XY/XX. Two more launch games I never should have bought. Noticing a pattern here?

PSP: Mega Man: Maverick Hunter X. Got this one over 1.5 years before I got the system to make sure that I would have it.

360: Hexic HD. I didn't buy a 360 until 2010 when the slim model came out, and this came preloaded. I have yet to play it. The first game I paid for was Shadow Complex a day later.

PS3: Metal Gear Solid 4. I waited until 2008 when this launched and bought the bundle.

Wii: Wii Sports and Twilight Princess. I think I played Wii Sports once or twice with my family and then never touched it again.

3DS: 3D Classics: Excitebike. This was given out for free the day the eShop launched, so it was my first 3DS game. My first paid game was Shantae: Risky's Revenge which is a DSi game I bought on the 3DS since I never had a DSi.

Amazingu Jun 8, 2012

Wow, 4 out of 4 PS3 owners got MGS4 first, even though that was far from a launch title.
Interesting.

Razakin Jun 8, 2012

Haven't owned much consoles but here we go:

SNES: Came with the Super Mario World, and first bought game was Super Bomberman, oh the fun playing that one, it's still so good.

Playstation: First game probably was Colin McRay Rally which my brother bought when we bought the console together, and later I bought Breath of Fire III. Such good days and memories playing both.

Playstation 2: Final Fantasy X, bought it before getting the console even.

Gamecube: Mega Man Network Transmission & Tales of Symphonia. Bought the console+games from a friend.

Nintendo DS: New Super Mario Bros.

Nintendo 3DS: Ocarina of Time 3D.

Amazingu wrote:

Interesting.

It's not that surprising. The system was obscenely expensive when it was first released and the launch titles weren't exactly must-haves. The 360 also had a year head-start and a lot of people were satisfied with that system.

(At first, I was proud that I had gotten one of the last backwards compatible systems... until a few years later when I realized that I never used the feature...)

TerraEpon Jun 8, 2012

Oh yeah, and I forgot 3DS....but I never got any game for it yet outside of free ones....

Dartannian Jun 8, 2012

Well, saying Super Mario World for SNES (or any of the pack-in titles for any of the other consoles) is obvious at best, kind of a cop-out at worst.

To be fair, my parents basically bought us the SNES along with a number of the launch titles at the time: F-Zero, Pilot Wings, and Sim City. I remember a 5th one, but it escapes me. I wanted Act Raiser, but that got shot down for another title. I only actually just played Act Raiser for the first time this past December, and it was every bit as good as I always thought it looked from Nintendo Power. Man, did I ever enjoy that game! Pilot Wings always perplexed me as a kid, but picking up on that one again this past December, I found I was actually able to play it. Knowing what to do, it's still pretty challenging!

N64, my second game was Star Fox 64 (Summer 1997), after spending every month up until then (6 months) trying to collect every Star in Super Mario 64. I remember having rented a few other N64 games (mostly launch titles) and not being particularly impressed by them (Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, and Cruisn' USA, to name two). I also got quite a bit of run-time out of Star Fox 64, earning all the medals for each stage, unlocking the secret vehicles for versus mode (though I never played versus mode with anybody) - and even the sound test. Somehow, I ended up getting the Star Fox 64 player's guide free from my Nintendo Power subscription. Also got the Legend of Zelda ~ Majora's Mask Nintendo Power's player's guide for free, not long after I got the game itself. And I got both of them unsolicited. Were they able to tracki our purchases back then? hmm

NES and SNES, I remember us buying up a whole bunch of titles when we first got those systems. We just didn't do that for any later consoles; Nintendo just lost a lot of third party support by the time it released the N64.

James O Jun 8, 2012

NES: I got one back in 1984-85 - we got five games for it - Excitebike, Zelda, Hogan's Alley, Duck Hunt and Golf (for my dad of course), we didn't get Super Mario Bros until next year

Game Boy: Tetris came with it - the first game I bought for it was Final Fantasy Legend.

Sega Genesis: My brother bought this while I went with SNES.  The first game I played on it was Streets of Rage

SNES: Super Mario World came with it but the first game I bought was Link to the Past

N64: I never bought this one but i did rent one when they first came out and i played Mario 64

PSX: Final Fantasy VII - i had rented one also and this game and i couldn't rent a memory card.  I had it for 5 days and made it to the Gold Saucer - on the fifth day the game wouldn't spin up anymore lol.  I soon bought one for myself.

GBC: never had one

DC: didn't own one myself but the first game i played on one was Chu Chu Rocket

GBA: Super Mario Advance

PS2: The Bouncer (of all things =p)

NGC: Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles

DS: Super Mario 64 DS - mostly because i never played it all the way thru when i rented an N64

PSP: I didn't pick up one of these until Dissidia came out.

PS3: Heavenly Sword

Wii: Wii Sports came with it and then I bought Twilight Princess, which I haven't even opened (still!)

3DS: I bought the Ocarina of Time 3DS before I got the system because i waited for the price to drop and for it to be a christmas present - i missed out on the ambassador games.

PS Vita - i have yet to really game on it - i transferred my saves over from my psp for FFIV CC and Dissidia - i have bought a copy of Katamari

I bought mine for Rock Band 2 smile

Crash Jun 8, 2012

These will probably be out of order, as I can't remember the exact order that I acquired all my systems, but here goes:

Atari 2600: Asteroids

Vectrex: Bought it used with Mine Storm (default game) and Hyperchase

Atari 5200 and 7800: I picked up these systems used when I was in grad school.  I don't think I ever actually played them, though.  I ended up giving them away to one of my friends along with all of the games I had bought.

NES: Super Mario Bros. (wasn't a pack-in at the time; I got the Nintendo Players' Guide instead with my system)

Turbo-Grafx: Keith Courage in Alpha Zones (pack-in); China Warrior was the first external game I bought (and it sucked, a lot)

Turbo-Grafx CD: Ys Book I & II (this did not suck, at all)

Turbo Duo: Dragon Slayer: The Legend of Heroes and Dungeon Explorer II (bought at the same time)

SuperGrafx: Battle Ace and Granzort

SNES: Super Mario All-Stars (pack-in); I think I had to buy Super Mario World separately

Game Boy: Qix.  I bought the system used from someone else, so it didn't have Tetris; Qix was the only game I played on it.

GBA: Never actually owned a GBA, but I had a first-generation Nintendo DS and the GBA player for the GameCube.  I think my first game was Castlevania: Circle of the Moon.

GameCube: Super Smash Bros. Melee (pack-in); I think Animal Crossing was the first game I bought

Nintendo DS: Super Mario 64 DS (which I think I played for about 15 minutes)

Sega Saturn: Got it used with 5 games for $60.  The games were Tomb Raider, Virtua Fighter 2, The Legend of Oasis, Darius Gaiden, and Bust a Move 2 (BAM 2 was the reason I got the system; I was strongly considering buying a Neo-Geo just to get this game before I found out they had released it on the Saturn).  Once I got my ST Key, the first Japanese game I got was Tokimeki Memorial.

Dreamcast: NBA2K.  Once I got a mod chip installed, the first Japanese game I got was Space Channel 5.

PSX: Never had one, but I did have both a US and Japanese PS2 with backwards compatibility.  I think the first PSX games I got were Guilty Gear (US) and Bust a Move (JP).

PS2 (US): Grand Theft Auto III

PS2 (Japanese): Beatmania IIDX 3rd Style, 4th Style, 5th Style, and 6th Style (all at the same time).  This was a separate console (as in, I didn't try to mod my US PS2), so I consider it separately.

PS3: Bioshock

PSP: DJMAX

Zorbfish Jun 9, 2012

Fun topic smile Skipping pack-ins in favor of first buys.

NES - Final Fantasy. Bought it used, cart only, from a rental place that was liquidating its NES library. Only game I never owned the system to; I had to play it with a friend on his machine.

GB - Super Mario Land
SNES - The Legend of Zelda: A Link to The Past
GBC - Pokemon Silver(?)
PSX - Final Fantasy VII
GBA - Advance Wars
PS2 - Dark Cloud
DS - Kirby Canvas Curse
X360 - Fallout 3 GOTY Edition (Regretting picking up a 360 instead of a PS3)
Vita - Lumines: Electronic Symphony

the_miker Jun 9, 2012

Very cool thread but how do you guys remember your first game on the older consoles?  Apparently my memory must not be that great.  I'll do my best..

NES - Castlevania II Simon's Quest, I think.  One of the early Mega Mans (probably 2) and Super Mario Bros. 1 and 2 were early acquires too.
Genesis - Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, or Golden Axe?  I really have no idea.. probably one of the Sonics though.
Sega CD - Sonic CD
SNES - Super Mario World or Mega Man X
Saturn - Daytona USA
N64 - Super Mario 64
PS1 - Mega Man X4.  I think I rented the system w/ a couple games before actually owning it, one of the games being the first "D" by Warp.
Dreamcast - Sonic Adventure
GBA - Castlevania Circle of the Moon
GameCube - Super Mario Sunshine
PS2 - Shadow Hearts
DS - Castlevania Dawn of Sorrow
PSP - Hot Shots Golf Open Tee
Wii - Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition or No More Heroes
PS3 - Minna no Golf 5 (Japanese version of Hot Shots Golf Out of Bounds)
360 - Deadly Premonition
Vita - Hot Shots Golf World Invitational
3DS - Rhythm Thief & the Emperor's Treasure (buying the system and game next month!)

Adam Corn Jun 9, 2012

NES - Legend of Zelda. First console and a surprise present so my parents picked the game.  Good call!
Genesis - Altered Beast pack-in at first. Either Golden Axe or Ghouls & Ghosts as first purchase I think.
Master System (via Power Base Converter) - Phantasy Star.  Only SMS game; totally hooked me even mid-Genesis era.
SNES - Street Fighter II
Saturn - Virtua Fighter (pack-in) and Panzer Dragoon
Playstation - Final Fantasy VII I think.
N64 - Super Mario 64
Gamecube - Super Monkey Ball and Star Wars Rogue Leader.  Good times!
Xbox - Panzer Dragoon Orta.  My only Xbox game.
Wii - Wii Sports and Rayman Raving Rabbids.  More good times!
PS3 - Street Fighter IV

This thread is eerie. Independently of reading this thread, I had decided to write an essay about my video game experiences. I've written 12 pages so far.

Here are some of my firsts:

NES (received for Christmas 1987): Super Mario Bros. (pack-in), Baseball, Skykid, Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, The Legend of Zelda

SNES (bought myself April or May 1992): Super Mario World (pack-in), Contra III

N64 (bought 9-29-1996): Super Mario 64....months later, Waverace 64

Dreamcast (bought on release date): Sonic Adventure, Soul Calibur

XISMZERO Jun 14, 2012

I know it says "first game" but many of mine were too of the norm. Like, who didn't have a Mario as their first Nintendo console game?

NES (was a little too young for this one): Super Mario Bros, TMNT
Game Boy: Tetris, Super Mario Land
Super NES: Super Mario World, Actraiser
Genesis: Sonic the Hedgehog
Saturn: Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Sega Rally
N64: Super Mario 64, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire*
Dreamcast: Sonic Adventure, Hydro Thunder and Soul Calibur*
GameCube: Luigi's Mansion, WaveRace Blue Storm and Star Wars Rogue Leader (part of the bundle)*
PSX: Ridge Racer, Mortal Kombat 3
PS2: TimeSplitters, Street Fighter EX3

Stopping caring after that...

Dartannian Aug 5, 2012 (edited Aug 5, 2012)

It's amazing when I think about it; the PS2 was the console I liked out of the least out of anything I ever owned, but it was the one I kept the longest (8 years); all the others, I kept no longer than 5 years. I sold/traded-in my NES just when it was about dying out. I find it incredible that so many other people still have fully functional NES consoles.

I take pretty good care of my stuff, almost to the extent of being immaculate, but the NES I had just wanted to die. I got rid of the SNES and N64 when they hit the 5 year mark, too, simply out of fear that, if I didn't, I would've "lost" money. You can either sell something before its expiry date and get a little money for it, and none at all after it dies.

Last car I had, I pretty much did the same thing: sold it when it showed signs of dying; it was 10 years old, to be fair.

Totally don't get this when it comes to entertainment.  I'm sure as heck glad my dad didn't sell his copies of Tolkien's books before I got to experience them for myself growing up.  I frequently go back to things that are good and continue to enjoy them well after their release...

(case in point: my friends and I still play Smash Bros. Melee WAY more than Brawl, and Melee is now over ten years old!)
