The Witcher 3 is almost amongst us! I think at this point, it is the only "next-gen" game I absolutely want to play. That said, I'm hoping there will be other such games released relatively soon. THAT said, what so-called next-gen games have people been playing or are interested in acquiring? I'm not talking about small indy games that you can purchase for a couple of dollars, but full beefy games. Now, there are some games I really want to play such as Dragon's Age 3, but that was released across the board (PS3 and 360 included) so I couldn't really call pure next-gen. At this point, I really don't see any compelling reason to get a PS4/One. Honestly, I'm much more interested in the New 3DS than anything else right now. Maybe it's just me and my taste in games, but does anyone else concur?

note: I'm not sure I'm really using the term "next-gen" correctly, but whatever. You know what I'm saying smile

I'm sure some people are going to say that I'm talking out of my ass here... especially since I'm not interested in Witcher III... but I can't help but feel this game is the real start of the current generation.

So should I restrict myself to games that are exclusive to PS4 and/or XB1?
Games without last-gen ports/versions? And not counting Wii U either?

Well that doesn't leave very much, but I had a lot of fun with inFamous Second Son personally, although not everyone agreed with me.

Bloodborne is fantastic, and probably the best reason to buy a PS4, and that's coming from someone who did not get into the Souls series very much.

There's the upcoming Arkham Knight which is looking very nice. Not expecting it to be very different from previous Arkham games though.

Judging by the recently released demo, Final Fantasy XV is going to be one to watch as well. Lots of potential.

The game that I've heard a lot of people hail as the "true start of the current/next generation" is Shadows of Mordor, more so because of the Nemesis system (which is apparently very complex. Haven't played the game myself yet) than because of its graphics though. There is a PS3 version, but apparently it's pretty bad.

Anyway, it always takes a few years for new consoles to really become something worth owning, and I think by the end of this year there should be something to justify the purchase for everyone.

I do want to play Bloodborne, I just don't think it qualifies for a PS4 purchase. As for Mordor, there is in fact a 360 version as well which is supposed to be much better than the PS3 version. Perhaps not as good as the PS4 version, but I still feel like this was not truly a next-gen game (although by no means a bad game). I do think and hope that soon there will be good reasons to upgrade. The systems themselves are not that expensive, it's a matter of having decent software! Right now, the games that interest me for the PS4, apart from Witcher, are all previous-gen. I want something to "WOW" me (again, other than Witcher 3 smile

I don't really want to play this... but I'm glad to see that it did well. However, even if I did want it I don't know if it be a system seller for me, I think I could wait to pick up the system when the library is stronger.

I've had a PS4 for over a year now, and I still have a hard time recommending it.  I like it, but that's because I use it for FFXIV (which runs brilliantly on it compared to the PS3).  The GTA5 port is great (but still a last-gen port), and I've been playing quite a few indie games on it, but NONE of those have been exclusive.  I'm sure there WILL be things in the future that make it worth having, but like I said, I can't yet say "omg you need to get a PS4 for ______" because there isn't an exclusive that fills that blank yet for me.

It says a lot to my mental state about gaming that I'm still trying to convince myself the PS THREE is worth picking up, while the PS4 has been out for a few years now. At this point I'm thinking, "well, Capcom is moving their fighters exclusively to PS4...but all my old Rock Band stuff I haven't touched in 4 years is on my Xbox account...aw hell, back to the NES.".

Yeah, I know, old man syndrome, but it takes a LOT to get me to move on picking up a console. The combination of Rock Band and Street Fighter (and later, Marvel vs Capcom) got me to snag the 360, but neither of their followups are expected to have the impact of the originals. I'm not seeing much and frankly, the Wii U's release schedule fits my game playing schedule pretty nicely as is (read: next to nothing). So I'll hold my cards for now.

Now if Capcom decides to re-use their Marvel engine and it's a game exclusive for PS4...Well, THEN we're talking.

I bought my PS4 specially so I could have an awesome indie games machine, so I reject your position that these systems need be purchased for AAA games. The only AAA games I have for the system are Diablo 3 and Ground Zeroes, but I have a ton of indie games on my PS4, and even though most of them aren't exclusive, they've made my purchase more than worth it. Hell, the whole thing was worth it just for local multi TowerFall.

Actually yeah... the XB1 I got my brother-in-law last Christmas was pretty much appreciated because he could play a few exclusive indie games. He wasn't really interested in the AAA titles at all.

Now if Microsoft would get rid of that trashy parity clause they have.

GoldfishX May 9, 2015

Every so often, I'll see an indie game that catches my attention, either by word of mouth or through something like AGDQ (they featured a lot of Indie titles this past event especially) and think, "hey, this looks cool". The problem they have is that there is a LOT of crap to wade through (and a LOT of toxic egos pushing that crap) and those of us without the time or motivation to explore further tend to ignore it as a whole, as a result. For some reason, I can't get behind the whole "retro-style" craze.

That's fine for you. Not for me, nor most people I would imagine. I would be surprised if you have one indy game that's made only for the PS4. Most you can get for a few bucks on different platforms. I did not say that the PS4/One systems need to be purchased exclusively for AAA games. If you're happy with what you have, that's great. Myself, I have no desire to only play indy games (although I do enjoy some of them) and I want some wonderful AAA titles to make a system purchase worthwhile.

The Talos Principle is coming to the PS4, in disc format! OK, this is one game I definitely want smile

Also, some may be interested to know that Mighty No 9 is also coming to the PS4.
