Just got the email from Atlus:

Atlus wrote:

One of the most heralded action RPG franchises of all time is coming to Nintendo DS™.  Legacy of Ys: Books I & II delivers the first two epic tomes of the famed saga on one cartridge, presented with a series of never-before-seen enhancements.

Presented in 3D for the first time, Legacy of Ys offers remastered graphics, a remixed music score, optional touch screen control, and local wireless multiplayer for up to four people.

Don't miss your chance to condescend to the next generation of gamers.  On February 10, 2009, experience these two celebrated classics - together on a single cartridge - as never before!

So I've been wanting to buy Ys I & II on the turbografx, but now I think I'll wait for the DS version.  Local wireless sounds spiffy (although to what extent it's applicable, we'll see), and it's always nice to see optional touch screen control.

Remixed sound could be a good or bad thing, depending on who's in charge.  Hopefully Yuzo Koshiro can lend a hand in this one.

I knew there was a reason I hadn't yet splurged for the Wii VC version yet...

Ohh, I'd like that.

Guys, don't get too excited... I've heard from a lot of people that these are some of the worst versions of Ys I and II ever made.  Unless Atlus fixes the controls when they localize, stick with the virtual console versions.  You'll be paying less money for higher quality.

Seriously? That sucks! Can you give us a link to reviews? Why are these "the worst versions" ever made?? That's quite a statement, please provide details, and I would expect Atlus to "clean-up" their games, but could a little tweaking really improve a game that's SO bad?

Man, no kidding?  neutral  Well, it is Atlus so they might clean things up a bit.  If they do a decent job, I'd be more than willing to shell out the dough to play these on the go.

I have no experience with the series, but I played the DS games, and I loved them.
Perhaps this is BECAUSE I have no prior experience, but they definitely aren't Bad in any way at all.
Sure, graphically they don't amount to much, but the games are fun anyway, and the music was great.

Hopefully someone will do an audio rip of the DS version (didn't like the other versions of Ys I and II that I checked out) now that they're gonna be available in the West.

I still have yet to play or hear the DS music from Ys.  But I'm at least glad Amazingu has taken a liking to it one way or another. smile

Atlus announced that they will provide a limited soundtrack CD with pre-orders.
I do hope this game will be good! I've always wanted to play the original Ys, and Atlus has also promised:

"a new localization, remastered graphics and music, optional touch screen controls, multiplayer, and much more"

I have faith! And Atlus rarely lets me down smile
So, who here as played any of the North American Ys games? If so, what are your impressions, and will you be getting this?

cheers,

"So far I'm waist deep in the first book, and haven't had a chance to try out the multiplayer just yet, but already it's obvious that, for the right type of gamer, Books I & II is going to need to be a must-purchase."

hands-on preview:

Oh, and:

"This version allows you to equip weapons and actually use them, if you find charging recklessly into enemies a bit unorthodox."

Looking great! Apparently the graphics are around SNES quality... and what's wrong with that? People have gone ga-ga over Chrono Trigger, which is also a remade SNES game, and besides graphics do not make a game (in my opinion)! Anyway, the more I read about this, the better it sounds smile

Dais Jan 27, 2009

SNES quality? are you kidding me? the games look like bad doujin crap. They're pretty atrocious compared to any of the Ys games made past the mid 90s. They don't even compare favorably with the ones made before then.

Qui-Gon Joe Feb 26, 2009

1up review by Jeremy Parish is up.  Pretty much sums up what I'd read about the game a number of places back when the Japanese releases came out.

"My advice: skip this and download the Turbo Duo version on Virtual Console. They're almost entirely the same games, but one costs less and does justice to the subject matter. "

So disappointing, too, since it appears that Atlus did a bang-up job on their end.

SonicPanda Feb 26, 2009

I won't lie, I bought it for the extra CD. It's on The Backlog, and I'm sure I'll get to it eventually. For what it's worth, I feel Mr. Parish has always given the Ys games a worse rep than they deserve. My time spent with the VC edition led me to think it did a better job at the sort of instant combat FFXII was trying to achieve, and with the speedy pace of say, Crystalis. But to each his own. I'm sure he wouldn't think much of my take on XII, either.

I cannot fit this comparison through my brain.

Ys and Final Fantasy XII?

In Ys you run into your foe to inflict damage, in FFXII you set battle commands ahead of time and run toward an enemy to initiate them. Both take the tapping-buttons-repeatedly element out of combat, but Ys is more about acting than planning (this remake, however, sounds more like Lagoon). It's difficult to explain, but something I felt strongly about when I played Ys on VC.

Dais Feb 27, 2009

I can see where you're coming from, but we don't get off at the same station.

Maybe it's because, unlike a fair share of people here, I grew up with more Western RPGs than Japanese ones - stuff like Ultima VII and later the various Bioware/Black Isle games...

And I'd say it was worth the $30 for that alone.  I'm no Ys I&II afficionado, but the CD is very pleasing.  I haven't had time to try the game yet.

Anyone have any feedback on the music from this release?  I know these songs have been beat to death, and I am familiar with the music that was on the most recent PC editions - is it the same?  Is the cd just a rip of of the game music?

James O Mar 10, 2009

I've been playing Ys I for a bit now... while the experience isn't stellar, I wouldn't say it's completely awful either.  Just my 2 cents.

I would LOVE to play the PS2 version of Ys, but of course it only came out in Japan...
well, maybe Atlus could bring over a PS2 version (or is that too much to hope for)?

cheers,

The other Ys thread has mention of an article where there could be another Ys I & II coming to the PSP along with Ys VII.

I've just started on Ys I myself, and I'm not finding it as objectionable as everyone is making it out to be.  In fact, I'm enjoying it quite a bit.  The music arrangements sound great coming from the DS, and the graphics are more than serviceable.  I love the newly-drawn art renderings, and the 3D engine is such that it's not blocky and stiffly animated like many of, say, Marvelous's highly-touted titles.  Gameplay, though now with an attack button, is still fast, fluid, and fun; the fact that you need to be in fairly close proximity to the enemy to attack means the spirit is still awfully close to the bumping mechanics of the original.  Oh, and the localization is terrific, too.

The US version comes with a soundtrack CD right?
Can someone maybe upload that, please?

A got a change to play for a little while when I traveling last week, and I agree, it's fun.  I wish there was a way of zooming out the map a bit so you could get a better sense of where you are sometimes, but otherwise it's fun.  I can also tell you that I'm glad they've added the ability to attack with a button.  I've never played the bump style Ys games, and the idea of that is just weird to me.

Where about is this link within this site for the Ys stuff?  Saw a bunch of gems, but nothing that said 'Ys', maybe I missed it.  Thanks guys - This soundtrack sounds quite capable!

They have it listed in the "L" section (Legacy of Ys: Books I & II)
