Crystal Feb 13, 2006

I saw this in a small shop.
Their asking price was $280 US.

Is it worth getting for that price or is it just ridiculous?  hmm

Ridiculous... it'd have to be mint and sealed before you'd step anywhere near that price. Surf YJ auctions, and you'll see the prices they normally go for... add on $30ish in middleman fees, and you should never pay more than $150, though you would normally pay less... same goes for all the "big" VGM cd's, Dracula New Classic especially... They will be variation in price with respect to completeness and condition, of course...

Eh, that's not necessarily the case!  I've seen Zelda S&D go for over $300 on ebay!!  Not that I would pay that much, but obviously someone will.  Also, recently Yoshi's Island sold for over $230 on ebay!!  My answer to Crystal's question is: you can probably get it for less, but not necessarily, and if it makes you happy, maybe it's worth buying.  If you're thinking of reselling it on ebay, then I would say it's not worth the cost.  I'm going to guess you can get S&D for around $150-$180 on ebay, but it's a toughy to find!!

Yes, "obviously someone will", if they aren't familiar with the cheaper (by $100's sometimes) methods. For the record, I bought both YI and S&D off ebay (both complete, maybe one was missing reg card) for half the price of those extreme finishing bids you mentioned, or a third of the price in YI's case. Learn how to browse Yahoo Japan's auctions Crystal, and find a good middleman (or equivalent service). It's daunting at first, but it's worth it, and hey, why overpay? Go to www.shoppingmalljapan.com, it's a great service (forget Rinkya...). There may be others around, but SMJ is the best I think (they're very fair, at least). Read their FAQ's and such. I'm not dismissing Ebay as a good buying point (the majority of my stuff is from there, including game music, but champ_des_pins has slowed his listings right down, which is where I got most of it from. m-2 (jerold as folks may know him, also a good YJA middleman) sells some good select VGM, but not as often anymore. mr.soundtrack is too expensive [this is probably where most of these huge selling price tales originate from]. That's basically it...), but if I knew about YJA earlier I would have saved SO MUCH money on quite a few occasions. I was naive and enthusiastic, and with no know-how tongue So I must stress that expensive items (not cheap ones, though choice is still very limited with cheap japanese items on ebay, compared to  YJA) will almost ALWAYS be cheaper when bought through a YJA middleman. This applies to some mid-price items as well. Do some browsing through Japan's auctions, and you get an idea of what they're worth over there. I don't regret the times I overspent, I just see it as a learning experience. But man, sometimes I really did throw quite a bit of money away tongue If you don't mind, then go for it...

I seem to recall that Crystal lives in Japan, and so would not need a middleman for bidding on Yahoo! Japan auctions.  That being the case, bidding on Y!J auctions would make even more sense than it does for us foreigners.

I did notice quite a bit of variability in prices on used CDs from shop to shop when I visited Tokyo (even for the same item in different branches of the same store).  For example, I saw the Thundercross OST at three separate branches of Liberty, with prices ranging from 2000 yen to 4900 yen for discs in the same condition.   I found it was worthwhile to bring a pen and some paper to jot down the prices of the items that I found when I was browsing, and (even more importantly) where I found them.  Then, at the end of the day, I would decide which items I really wanted, and would go back to the stores that had the cheapest prices to buy them.

One Liberty store in Akihabara had an absolutely fantastic selection at fair prices.  It had almost all the big name rarities:  Dracula New Classic, all the Konami Battle CDs, Estpolis, tons of Falcom stuff, lots of Yuzo Koshiro CDs (Actraiser, the Bare Knuckle series), a couple Orchestral Game Concerts...

But as has been said, it really depends on how badly you want it.  If you absolutely must have it right now, and are willing to pay the price, then go for it.  If you're willing to wait, there is a very good chance you can find it significantly cheaper on Yahoo! Japan.

American Nightmare Feb 14, 2006

I purchased S&D on eBay a few months ago for $75, and a couple of weeks later another copy sold for $75 as well.  Neither copy came with the obi, but both were in "excellent" condition and otherwise complete.  Keep an eye on eBay and you'll eventually find a good deal.
