So what do y'all think?

Click me...

I think it's sexy!

Granted the recording isn't of the best quality, it'll only sound better in-game.  It begins exactly like "Hyrule Field Main Theme" but then takes on a life of it's own.

I always wondered why that song was called "Hyrule Field Main Theme" - particularly the 'Main Theme' part.  It seems as though OoT's overworld theme will be the foundation for which every Hyrule based Zelda overworld theme composition will be based (barring Minish Cap, it seems).

That's a good thing, because arranging the series theme over and over on the overworld theme was gettin' a little wack.  Just the motif will suffice.  I like this direction.

So much for orchestrated music I guess. Bummer.

My thoughts exactly.

Ryu Sep 7, 2006

Hm, why does it say it was ripped from the DS in the ID3v2 tag?  Could that explain why it isn't orchestrated?

Didn't they say from day one that Twilight Princess was only going to be partially orchestrated? There's still hope!

Still, I wish Nintendo would at least get some BETTER Midi some time.

True.  It was either Kondo or Aonuma who said they'd orchestrate as many pieces as the budget would allow.

Also, I'm gonna assume that this is just one movement of the overworld theme.  I'm willing to bet that it'll be interactive in some way... maybe not to the extent of OoT's three movement overworld theme, but I'm sure they'd let the battle theme overlap and interrupt the piece given the in-game circumstances. That in and of itself would rule out having the piece arranged for orchestra.  In-game, atleast.

Yeah man.  Tell me about it.

Open Treasure Box ~ Item catch fanfare

I like the choir.

This one is orchestrated in the beginning during the cutscene, then reverts to MIDI during the gameplay.  Sounds like the horse battle with that big Ogre on the hog with the kid tied to the stick we've seen in the videos.  It includes sound effects.

Question... who was fortunate enough to upload this tune?

**Hopes there will be a OST of this soon-to-be-released ZELDA entry**

Reminds me of Suikoden music.  Has that epic march thing going for it that seems to be in Suikoden a lot.

Jon Turner Sep 7, 2006

I actually just listened to it.  Pity the sound quailty isn't on par, but it sounds no worse than the N64 ZELDA soundtracks, which still managed to be brilliant in spite of the cheap synthesis.  Composition wise, the song sounds pretty much as you'd expect for a ZELDA game, although that shouldn't be surprising given that the song's style is similar to that of composer Koji Kondo (or is it Toru Minegishi?  I don't know who did this).

Here's hoping that this game proves popular enough to warrant a soundtrack album.

Myself, I am awaiting it.  Anxiously.

It sounds a lot better than the N64 synth to me by far.  But just not nearly up to par to what the Gamecube is capable of.

Kondo said himself that he didn't do any composing for the game himself earlier this year, but he can still be partially credited for the composition since it's based off of his music.  Even the boss battle them has remnants of OoT's "Dinosaur Boss Battle".

I'm sure this'll get a soundtrack release.  And I'm sure it'll be just a big, if not bigger, than Wind Waker's soundtrack.  Now, if they try to squeeze this on just 2 discs, I'm sure heads will roll over in Nintendo's camp.  I'll see to it.

It sounds similar to Wind Waker's synth. Unfortunately.

The composition itself is pleasant enough.

Eh? Kondo isn't working on it?

At Video Games Live, the concert at Toronto, we had a giant screen where Kondo specifically said he was working on the latest ediiton of Zelda. Maybe not composing, but I would be suprised.

Similarly to how Miyamoto "only" supervises game designs for a decade Kondo does so for music.

Considering that this is supposedly the biggest of the ZELDA games, I'm hoping that a) there's plenty of music to satisfy fans, and b) they won't take the easy way out and either squeeze it onto 2 discs and/or release only a single-disc release.  Now THAT would be bad.

Regarding what I said about the sound synthesis, I take it back, I'd say it's on par with WINDWAKER, which, in and of itself, is not bad, but it may be a drawback to an otherwise potentially superb soundtrack with a few awesome sounding orchestral tunes to boot.

Either way, I'm picking this up.

I didn't read this before I came to the exact same conclusion. No complaints from me...That was one of the better tunes I've heard from the series.

Synth is fine to me. I personally prefer that hint of "gaminess" than the novelty of having live instruments, especially for something like Zelda.

Schala Sep 8, 2006

I had to smile when I heard the whistle play just the first few notes of the classic Zelda overworld tune. It sounded too much like the OoT tune for me to really like it, though...Not that I don't like the OoT theme, it's mainly that I don't know the entire OoT theme enough to be able to distinguish it from this one.

discoalucard Sep 8, 2006

Uh...this is straight from a DS, as someone mentioned before. I will bet money that it will sound better on the Gamecube, even if they're essentially using the same samples.

Ampersand Sep 8, 2006

This isn't the overworld theme, it's from the Zelda Gallery download demo they had at E3 '05, which was a photo album of Twilight Princess screenshots set to this music.

Jon Turner Sep 16, 2006

Speaking of which, on http://www.ignwii.com/, I heard an all-new musical cue from ZELDA:  TWILIGHT PRINCESS on one of the game's newly uploaded video footage.  It sounds very epic and stirring, and yes, it's fully orchestral.  It has shades of OCARINA OF TIME's Overworld theme and then takes on its own identity.

From the sounds of this, I think this could very well be a very fine soundtrack coming up.

Hey Jon... I watched that video earlier this morning.  I just downloaded it on my own PC and watched it again...  The piece featured is wonderful - clearly based off of Ocarina of Time's "Hyrule Field Main Theme".  I love the turn it takes at :36, and good to know they're using a choir too.

Question for you though: The brief melody on the strings from :23 to :29 sounds very familiar, but I cannot place it.  Any idea which song that's from?  It sounds to me like it's been used in a previous Zelda game.  I know Zelda music inside-out, so dunno why I'm having so much trouble with it!  I keep listening over and over again try'na figure out which game I've heard it before...

Heh, long time no speak to, eh?  Pleased that you remembered me.  smile

As well-versed as I am in my ZELDA music anthology (although I haven't played FOUR SWORDS or the GBC games, sorry), I listened closely to that again, and I can't figure out where that's from either.

Sorry that I couldn't answer that question.

That little melody DOES sound familiar, but I don't think it's familiar from Zelda.
